Photographs

One picture tells a thousand words. This photo gallery is not about pretty trucks all customized and decked out to assault the off road trails. This is where the shiny side takes a back seat to the underside of the truck and what's under the hood. These images show failures of engines and components or show details about parts and procedures discussed here at the DTS. Even if there is not something that can be learned from every image I think you will agree that most of these are simply very interesting to look at.

  Cab & Body Removal
Removing a diesel engine from any Super Duty, Excursion or Econoline by the book is time consuming and requires major disassembly of the front end of the vehicle. Some professional technicians discovered that removing the cabs and bodies from these vehicles makes the job much easier. This has become common practice and became a design feature and preferred repair method with 2008 and newer trucks.

  Common Wiring Problems
In this pictorial we show some common and interesting wiring harness damage and failures that have been troublesome to owners and technicians. Some are the result of design however there are always a human factors beyond design that lead to things going wrong.

  Loss of Control
There are many things that can cause driveability concerns that will make you pull your hair out and lose control. Control of your input and output devices that is! These images capture the cause of a few vehicle problems that caused a lot of aggravation to owners, technicians and perhaps an engineer or two.

  Oil Leaks
6.0L and 7.3L Power Strokes® tend to leak oil from time to time. Here we will spotlight some of the common areas, components and seals that have given us trouble.

  Engine Failure One
A 6.0 that had fuel leaking into the crankcase from faulty injector(s) and consequently self destructed in a series of events. This was not a common thing to have happen as injector failures of this type were limited to very early build engines.

  Carbon
Call it what you want, it's bad and it goes with the territory. Pollution devices are presenting a new problem for diesel engines.

  More Engine Failures
A 6.0L that exploded and one with foreign material found pounded into the pistons. Some of these pictures were reader submitted without any description or diagnosis of the failure given.

  6.0L Hydraulic Cam Follower Failure
A failed roller on a cam follower left a trail of debris. The damage caused by the debris eventually caused a no start condition but it was already too late.
