Keep Alive Memory or KAM is a form of RAM. The PCM stores information in keep alive memory about vehicle operating conditions, and then uses this information to compensate for component variability and wear. Keep Alive RAM remains powered when the vehicle key is off so that this information is not lost. Disconnecting the module or the battery erases this memory along with learned strategies or fuel trims. A scan tool may also be used to erase KAM and more recently data tables for specific components or sub-systems can be erased individually after repairs or the replacement certain of parts.
