SOME 2008-2010 F-SERIES SUPER-DUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 6.4L DIESEL ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT A BUCK/JERK OR SURGE CONDITION WHEN TOWING 5TH WHEEL OR GOOSENECK TRAILERS. ANALYSIS OF FIELD REPORTS REVEALS THAT THIS CONDITION IS NOT OCCURRING WITH THE VEHICLE IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS FOR THIS CONDITION INDICATE THAT VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ADJUSTABLE PEDALS ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS CONCERN WITH THE PEDALS ADJUSTED ALL THE WAY UP, DUE TO CUSTOMERS UNKNOWINGLY TIPPING IN AND OUT OF THE PEDAL WHEN VEHICLE/TRAILER BUCK JERK INTERACTION OCCURS. THIS CONDITION IS MORE NOTICEABLE ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS EQUIPPED VEHICLES BUT MAY ALSO OCCUR ON MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, IT CAN ALSO BE PERPETUATED BY AFTERMARKET HITCH INTERACTION. ENGINEERING IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING FIELD REPORTS.

2743 - MULTIPLE VEHICLE LINES - USE OF AFTERMARKET LAMPS - DO NOT USE HIGH WATTAGE BULBS

SEVERAL AFTERMARKET COMPANIES OFFER REPLACEMENT HEADLAMP BULBS OF A HIGHER WATTAGE RATING THAN OEM STOCK BULBS. THESE BULBS ARE NOT DOT APPROVED AND ARE TYPICALLY SOLD WITH THE DISCLAIMER OF 'FOR OFF-ROAD USE ONLY'. IN ADDITION TO POSSIBLY BEING ILLEGAL FOR STREET USE, THE BULBS ALSO DRAW MUCH MORE CURRENT THAN OEM BULBS. THIS INCREASED CURRENT CAN RESULT IN ACTUATION OF THE SHORT-CIRCUIT PROTECTION FEATURE (LOOKING LIKE BULB BURNOUT), OR DAMAGE TO THE HEADLAMP SWITCH, MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH, WIRING, WIRING CONNECTORS, OR EVEN THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES THEMSELVES. THESE HIGH-WATTAGE AFTERMARKET BULBS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH OEM BULBS, AND CUSTOMERS ADVISED NOT TO USE THEM.

SOME 6.0L AND 4.5L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE VARIOUS DRIVEABILITY SYMPTOMS AFTER OIL COOLER SERVICE. THIS MAY BE THE RESULT OF THE IPR BECOMING CONTAMINATED AND BEING UNABLE TO CONTROL ICP PROPERLY. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETELY CLEAN OFF ALL OIL AND DEBRIS PRIOR TO OIL COOLER COVER REMOVAL AND TO INSPECT THE OIL PUMP INLET STRAINER SCREEN FOR DAMAGE PRIOR TO OIL COOLER REPLACEMENT. IF THE SCREEN IS DAMAGED, IT MUST BE REPLACED. THE RESERVOIR MUST BE COMPLETELY CLEANED TO ENSURE THERE IS NO CONTAMINATION TO THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL SYSTEM FROM DEBRIS ENTERING THE OIL DURING OIL COOLER REPLACEMENT. AFTER CLEANING, PRE-FILLING THE RESERVOIR WITH CLEAN OIL WILL HELP PREVENT EXTENDED CRANK TIME FROM AIR ENTERING THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL SYSTEM UPON ASSEMBLY.

ON A 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L, OR 4.5L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLE IF THE TURBOCHARGER IS REPLACED FOR AN INTERNAL OIL LEAK OR COMPRESSOR SHAFT FAILURE, THE CHARGE AIR COOLER (CAC) SHOULD BE CHECKED FOR OIL CONTAMINATION AND CONSEQUENTLY CLEANED IF CONTAMINATION IS FOUND. THE CAC SHOULD ALSO BE INSPECTED AND CLEANED OF OIL, FUEL, OR METAL CONTAMINATION AFTER AN ENGINE FAILURE THAT MAY HAVE PUSHED OIL, FUEL, OR METAL INTO THE CAC DUE TO EXCESSIVE CRANKCASE PRESSURE. A THOROUGH CLEANING OF THE CAC SYSTEM IS NECESSARY TO PREVENT ENGINE DAMAGE OR DRIVABILITY CONCERNS. REFER TO THE WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 303-12 FOR PROPER CAC CLEANING PROCEDURES. IF EXHAUST SMOKE IS OBSERVED AFTER ENGINE REPAIRS AND THE CAC CLEANING HAVE BEEN COMPLETED REFER TO SYMPTOM CHART 8 IN THE PCED MANUAL.

2268 - 2008-2009 F-SUPER DUTY - RADIATOR COOLANT LEAKS

ENGINEERING IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING SOME 6.4L DIESEL EQUIPPED VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT A RADIATOR COOLANT LEAK DUE TO MALFUNCTIONING THERMOSTATS. USE AN IDS AND MONITOR ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE (EOT) AND ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) PIDS. WITH EOT AT 195 DEG. F (90 DEG. C) DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY UNLOADED AT 55-70 MPH (88-112 KPH) CONSTANT SPEED TO OBSERVE EOT AND ECT TEMP. IF EOT IS LESS THAN 8 DEG. F (4.4 DEG. C) HIGHER THAN ECT, AND THE COOLANT TEMP FLUCTUATES ROUGHLY 5 DEG. F (2.7 DEG. C), THE THERMOSTAT IS OK. ONLY REPLACE THERMOSTATS IF EOT EXCEEDS ECT BY GREATER THAN 8 DEG. F (4.4 DEG. C) OR IF THE ECT READINGS FLUCTUATE 10 TO 12 DEG. F (5.55-6.66 DEG. C) ROUGHLY EVERY 30 SECONDS. REFERENCE WORKSHOP MANUAL ENGINE COOLING SECTION 303-03 FOR THERMOSTAT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES.

2235 - 1997-2009 MULTIPLE VEHICLE - 4.6L/5.4L - ENGINE TICKING AND/OR RATTLE NOISE

MULTIPLE VEHICLE LINES WITH 4.6L OR 5.4L ENGINE MAY EXPERIENCE AN ENGINE TICKING OR RATTLE NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A STUCK TAPPET (HLA). THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE DETERIORATION OF AN AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER. VEHICLES WITH THIS CONDITION HAVE LOW OIL PRESSURE AT ONE CYLINDER HEAD ONLY, WHILE MAIN PRESSURES ARE NORMAL. DISLODGED MATERIAL FROM THE AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER BLOCKS THE CAM CAP OIL PASSAGE, EITHER AT CYLINDER #4 (RIGHT BANK REAR) OR CYLINDER #5 (LEFT BANK FRONT).FOR VCT EQUIPPED ENGINES, INSPECT THE VCT VALVE BODY AND THE OIL PASSAGES UNDER THE FIRST CAM CAP. FORD RECOMMENDS THE USE OF FORD APPROVED FILTERS ONLY. DAMAGE TO ENGINES CAUSED BY AFTERMARKET OIL FILTERS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.
