Keith Browning
Pulled the front cover off a 2020 7.3L to find the oil pump drive chain tensioner flopping around - broken spring. I guess they don't need much tension if that is all the tensioner has. Makes a lot of noise but it kept pumping oil!
Steve Mutter
That's good find, nice to know it does not take the motor out when that fails.
mchan68
Not as scary as what you'll see when you pull the oil pan off a 2.7/3.0 V6. The oil pump is driven by a thin RUBBER cogged belt (like a timing belt) submerged in engine oil!!! I believe I saw an SSM about an updated replacement chain drive setup somewhere not too long ago. Keith Browning
STILL waiting for a new tensioner... was told maybe February. By the way, the truck was bought back and Ford wants to pick it up. They can have it in it's disassembled condition for all I care at this point. Keith Browning
I guess I never followed up - I did eventually get the parts and put it together. By that time Ford had already bought the truck back and were trying to pick it up.
forddieseldoctor
We had one of those too back when the 7.3 first came out. Guy who owned it is an engineer for Ford and he was whining that he wanted lemon law on his too even though it was the only issue he ever had with it.
