  1. Even though I bought the socket a 1/4" 10mm short socket and a 1/4" extension fits in there just fine. If you want honesty, I bought the damn socket out of guilt because my Snappy dealer picked up the socket partially with me in mind. Remember, I did back into the Snap-on truck with a dump truck. With money so tight this year I have basically purchased nothing in the way of tools.
  2. I think the correlation here is that in an audit situation or any time a claim is reviewed the absence of the diagnostic sheets could mean denial of claims. If I am not mistaken they are required. My dealership was warned on this not too long ago.
  3. In this case they were sitting on the cylinder head but the potential to go hunting like for 6.0L spool valve nuts for example is there.
  4. Just want to update this topic: Inspection of ALL rocker arm tips revealed wear on every one. Most no longer rolled freely by finger tip and many were worn down leaving the contact point level with the rocker socket. In the image below, the rocker on the left is from the #1 intake and as you can see the tip is missing. The rocker on the right is from the same engine and you can see that the tip is worn. As this continues to wear the retainer will eventually let go and the fulcrum will eventually contact the mounting plate damaging the rocker and or causing the rocker to eject from the assembly.
  5. 54 bucks? Holy shit!!! The Snap-on socket I bought was only $29!
  6. I believe you are correct on that Greg but I would think Ford would want to continue to use them. I know there are differing opinions concerning them here at the DTS but I for one think they are beneficial in that they are a consistent manner of documenting test results and they provide technicians a diagnostic routine to follow.
  7. Yes Sir! I also recall an SSM advising us not to replace steering gears for leaks and that there were seal kits or individual seals avalable... I can't remember.
  8. In my over 24 years of "doing it" there have only been less than a handful of instances where the usual resistance, voltage or voltage drop testing have failed me. The tools required for these types of "tests" are very standard and the expected results can be specified. I think Jim eluded to the the heart of the matter... Since any time we perform a circuit load test the device used is typically fabricated from any number of possible components the results can and will vary especially if we go looking for a specific value. That is why the two requirements for a good circuit load test are 1-provide a sufficient load and 2-is the light bulb bright enough? (pun intended) I don't think that it's the METHOD in which "we" perform tests that is the problem, it's the approach.
  9. We have a few openings in our shop if you are interested. PB Blaster and the torch are my two besetest friends.
  10. I have only done the medium duty truck steering gears but I vaguely recall replacing an output shaft seal or two on Super Duty's. It has been a while though
  11. Yeah, like when they crank the power up to 6 and breach the head gaskets... coolant is ejected out of the degas bottle and all over the Banks module and harness that is velcro'd on top of the battery junction box. I have busted a couple of guys that brought their trucks in with serious head gasket failures. The BJB is nice and clean yet there is white coolant residue all round it including the underside of the hood. Then you remove the battery cover to see two perfectly clean PCM connectors and one with coolant splatter all over it from being pulled out and plugged into the Banks module... this is also true for the Edge box as well.
  12. So I have my first driveability concern on a 6.7L and I don't see any diagnostic sheets for this engine in the PCED. Anybody have any intel on this?
  13. Hooray. I finally got a 6.7L in with a check engine light on. The turbocharger wastegate control solenoid is pooched according to the PCED. Anybody get a look at pinpoint tests KA for this engine? Smoke testing this thing is not going to be pretty if you have to. Since I didn't have any of the "suitable" items required I moved on to proving out the rest of the system before looking for leaks.
  14. Idle time wont affect NOx like you said but it does factor into fuel economy and service intervals... perhaps I shoulda left dat out considering the topic...
  15. I know the F650/750 have larger tanks for this reason but since you put this as "miles per gallon" it seems a little high... but is this normal? The larger tanks as I read it were to accommodate higher operating loads, idle time typical of the medium trucks and the longer oil change intervals as compared to the light duty trucks.
  16. I take it you are bringing attention to the fact that Ford is asking us to LOAD TEST circuits here and not use our ohm meter or volt meter??? How many techs to you think actually know how to load test a circuit and interpret the readings?
  17. The 6.4L does not require head bolt removal to service the rockers. They are mounted on separate plates bolted to the head under the fuel rails. You can order individual parts or a complete rocker assembly for each cylinder that comes with the plate, fulcrum balls, intake and exhaust rocker arms and the plastic clips. I didn't see anything resembling another kit in the parts catalog... doesn't mean it's not out there though.
  18. Still waiting on back ordered parts to arrive but I wanted to update you guys - After further inspection I discovered most of the rockers have worn out and binding valve bridge balls... or whatever they are called.
  19. That is what I quickly came to realize. They guy runs the truck from Florida to Jersey all the time and has 150,000 on it at this point. It's a solid truck and the job should be done right to keep this engine running for a long time to come. It appears to be lacking in maintenance where the cooling system is concerned.
  20. I am I right in thinking that we should treat a 4.5L with a failed EGR cooler the same as we do a 6.0L? I haven't seen one of these fail in a looooooooong time.
  21. And with that said I will say that I have not spent more than maybe $100 on tools in the last year or so. I simply have no money left with the economy the way it is.
