  1. We are very high in Diesel repairs too. Luckily it's the only area we have in the red right now, and as such, we're not too worried because if only Diesels are high, they leave you alone. There is a message about that on FMC dealer in the warranty bulletins. I also heard from a PSMAC rep that they are planning to re-evaluate the bell curve next year so that truck shops aren't grouped with low volume truck dealers when comparing Diesel repair costs. That should help all of us out hopefully.

    I guess that we really shouldn't be surprised if making these work ends up being huge pain in the ass. After all, it's from the same company that brought us that wonderful WDS. Remember doing a 10% reghost on those every couple weeks? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif

    Now I think I'll backup my hard drive before I even start this ordeal just incase I need to revert to what I know works.

It's a nice little package which comes with the wireless card, software cd, new clear plastic vcm cover, and instructions. It looks pretty idiot proof too. I can't wait to bring my vcm home tomorrow and get this thing working. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

  4. I recall the drainback valve in the rear oil cooler header tends to fall out on that year, and drains the hp reservoir -since the early ones didn't have a standpipe in it. If you remove the oil filter, it will fall out with the filter. If you're able to collect the 2 washers and the spring, it can be reused by staking it back into place. Otherwise, the oil cooler header needs to be replaced. Ford updated it by installing a snap ring to retain the valve assembly. Otherwise check for a badly worn low pressure oil pump. They don't usually look bad, but if checked with a feeler gauge sometimes you'll find it. There may also be a check valve in the hp pump itslef, or the front cover depending on the year, so that's something to keep in mind too. Check tsb 96-11-13 for more on that. I tried reading it but found it very confusing. Another thought...If the low pressure pump is coming apart, there may be pieces of it sticking the IPR open too.

  5. And if you're cheap like me, you can sometimes rig one of those brake caliper tools to use as a pulling fixture. Remove the rockers and both injector hold down bolts. Place some crumpled paper in the bottom of the cup to prevent shavings from entering the cylinder. tap the hole with the normal Rotunda tap and guide. Then, if there is no room for the slide hammer SOMETIMES you can place a brake caliper tool across the rocker pedistals and thread a bolt through it with a nut and some thrust washers. then hold the bolt and turn the nut to extract the cup. Much the same way a harmonic damper puller works. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

    It may not work in an Econoline because of space, and on right bank F-series you may need to remove the evap housing. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif

  6. See that part in there where Hotline KNOWS there's a good chance the pump is damaged when a short occours. Yet the TSB wants us to just replace the wiring first and reassemble the vehicle...That is because a pump costs more than 8 hours of our time, thus ford is more than willing to take that chance.   7. probably about 6 hrs total. I did this in 04 so its hard to remember. I estimate that I spent 1.5 hours going through evtm's and figuring out that (it seems)all 7.3 DIT's have their 42 pin connector injector control circuits in the same pin location regardless of year. The rest of the time Assembling the connector/harness/box assembly. It could be done a faster I think, but I'm pretty anal about soldering my connections and doing a fancy job. I over built mine, If I had to do it over again I would have used a smaller gauge wire so it isn't so bulky, and made the harness a little longer so I could reach it into the truck thereby allowing me to drive the vehicle with it hooked up should the need ever arise. I haven't found any sources for a new 42 pin connector, so you'll have to raid a junk yard to get one. The rest of the materials are available at Radio Shak.

    hotline said shorted wire will damage the pump. We had 2 last week
    with same concern. Much easier with cab off. Not too bad.

    (307) 266-1680Both we had had to be cab off the turbo inlet pipe
    fasteners really suck the big one assuming you can actually get them
    loose without stripping or breaking them . Not to mention the
    aftershock of exhaust leaks because it's virtually impossible to
    follow the WSM procedure to torque the up piped EDOC and brackets in
    any kind of sequence with the cab on.

    They all have to be replaced whenever the exhaust is removed from
    the back of the engine.

    If you'd rather spend about $50 and have some time on your hands you can build your own like this. Go to Radio Shak and get yourself a project box, 8x 110v toggle switches, a spool of wire, gromet, and a label maker. You will also need to procure one of the 42 pin connectors found on many ford vehicles (mine came from an old Taurus engine harness). Wire the connectors so that all of the pins are just a pass through, except the 8 injector control circuits which you run through the swith box. I checked several E and F series evtm's for several model years, and all had the same injector pin locations - so I'm pretty sure this will work on any 7.3 DIT, but you should do your own research to be sure. Install, label, and wire the switches respectively.
    Then to use it, just connect this device in series with the engine harness and make sure all switches are closed. Start the engine, and switch off cylinders one at a time to isolate weak injectors (often this is the only way to diagnose a cold miss). If it's not obvious which one it is, monitor the mfdes pid (mass fuel desired) and write down what it reads for each cylinder. add the readings and divide by 8 to get an average. Compare each individual reading to the average and you should see pretty clearly which injector(s) are at fault. NEVER SHUT OFF MORE THAN 1 OR 2 INJECTORS AT A TIME AS THIS IS VERY HARD ON THE IDM AND MAY CAUSE IT TO FAIL. Once you have narrowed it to your specific cylinder(s), you are 3/4 of the way through the SSCC process!!!

Since I own my own ids and will be paying with plastic, they just took my contact info and SAY that they will give me a call when some are available.   11. Are your injectors new or Reman? I've been burned by a reman injector before. If you have one of the 7.3 injector bench testers that Ford sent to us a couple years ago, you can vacuum test the injectors to check for internal plunger leakage - which will cause oil consumption because it will be injected in to the cylinder and be burned as fuel. There is a video clip on the tech time plus archives that explains how it works (I think a web course too). I'd start there before doing exploratory surgery on the engine.

    Bay 2: I had a 05 F250 with a REALLY intemitant no start, but not having any codes, and not being able to get it to happen I slapped it with a big ol NPF and shipped it. Told cust it might be from thier aftermarket remote start-and that they should unplug it and drive it for a while to see if the problem happens again /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer2.gif
