  1. In December I left the dealership to go work as a mechanic at a city yard after 15 years. The last 6 years of which was pretty much working only on diesels. Now that I am out of the hussle and bussle of it all I find myself coming here to read what I have been missing for the last several months. I feel for you guys. When I left I had high hopes that the 6.4l was going to be much less problematic than the launch of the 6.0l. And it may be too early to tell but what I read here sounds discouraging at the least. Amonth or so ago our fleet bought an '08 f-550 with the 6.4l and it seems that the day it was delivered was the day that the flame thrower video was put up here. I couldnt help but think of a class of preschoolers on a field trip walking on the sidewalk when a 6.4l drives by. Its kinda scary! Since then our new bomb truck has gone thru what I suspect was a regen process and the heat coming from that tail pipe without flames is amazing. The next regen we are thinking of a having a shop barbeque! Anyhow I must be rambling here by now but as I am repairing a weedwacker instead of an e-350 I will think of all of you and hope for the best that the 6.4l will eventually be a blessing for and not the headache that the 6.0l was or is.

  2. I have a visual short detector that my friend built me. You plug it in the place of the fuse and when the short is present the circuit breaker in it opens the circuit sending the power thru a 3156 bulb which protects the wiring. I keep several different size circuit breakers for different jobs. I think the bulb socket is an old villager one that was recalled years ago. It could use a audible device for when you're out wiggling wires. oh and my 6.0l glow plug remover before ford came out with one.

  3. I'm going on week 2 working for a city as a mechanic. The pace is much more relaxing than always being stressed out in a flatrate shop. I'm trying to catch on to "it'll be done when its done" and " if it needs it ,do it". I have no idea why it took me so long to do this. Yeah it was a little pay cut over all but the hours are really steady and there is no slow time and got to go, got to go time! and better benifits...4 weeks start accruing after 6 months, i've never had more than 2 weeks in almost 14 years at 2 dealers...good luck!

  4. Hey I did that one a while back too! At least I aint the only one! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

When I do 7.3l injectors I always remove the glow plug and then reinstall the valve cover with couple of bolts to purge any oil or fuel out of the cylinder and could you imagine what the tech next to me looked like the one time i forget to put the valve cover bolts in and crank it as he is walking by in the front of the vehicle.. luckily he was wearing safety glasses because his eyes were the only thing that were clean! duhhh!

  5. Speaking the 6.4l and mods...anyone hear of any computer inhancements that will provide any extra clues to a pcm that has been chipped and then removed prior to bringing it in? I did the new model stuff on fmcdealer and there was not any mention of that, though i did see something about a new protocol.

  6. We see alot of the delaminations here for some reason. One company each truck gets a tank aboput every 5ooo miles. I personally feel its a supplier issue but just my opinion. Note that on the 6.0l doing the inlet restriction to rule out a delaminated tank is useless since there isnt a filter in the tank pickup anymore. It plugs up both fuels on the 6.0l and i've seen it damage injetcor due toi the lack in fuel pressure.

  7. I was foreman and commuting 200 miles a day before i changed to a locate dealer. i'm just a regular tech now and have no worries about anything except my own vehicles. what a relief but on the other hand i went from an hourly shop to a flat rate shop and cant call in sick whenever i need a mental health day. there is always pluses and minuses.

  8. Got home today to find a message on the answering machine from the service manager down at acura wanting to talk about me coming over there... no 6.0l ambulances that dont start and no jacked up f350 that i need a ladder to climb in and out of. any suggestions?
