  1. I went to work for a city agency after 15 years and everyday I wonder why I didn't do it years ago. You can't put a price on the relief from the all the stress that comes with working at the dealership on flat rate. I say go for it and never look back!
  2. In December I left the dealership to go work as a mechanic at a city yard after 15 years. The last 6 years of which was pretty much working only on diesels. Now that I am out of the hussle and bussle of it all I find myself coming here to read what I have been missing for the last several months. I feel for you guys. When I left I had high hopes that the 6.4l was going to be much less problematic than the launch of the 6.0l. And it may be too early to tell but what I read here sounds discouraging at the least. Amonth or so ago our fleet bought an '08 f-550 with the 6.4l and it seems that the day it was delivered was the day that the flame thrower video was put up here. I couldnt help but think of a class of preschoolers on a field trip walking on the sidewalk when a 6.4l drives by. Its kinda scary! Since then our new bomb truck has gone thru what I suspect was a regen process and the heat coming from that tail pipe without flames is amazing. The next regen we are thinking of a having a shop barbeque! Anyhow I must be rambling here by now but as I am repairing a weedwacker instead of an e-350 I will think of all of you and hope for the best that the 6.4l will eventually be a blessing for and not the headache that the 6.0l was or is.
  3. Maybe an under valve cover harness just starting to got bad..Also had a few Ipr wires chafe near the Ipr that gave no codes and a weird driveability problem...
  4. My bad...its more of a protector than a detector!
  5. I have a visual short detector that my friend built me. You plug it in the place of the fuse and when the short is present the circuit breaker in it opens the circuit sending the power thru a 3156 bulb which protects the wiring. I keep several different size circuit breakers for different jobs. I think the bulb socket is an old villager one that was recalled years ago. It could use a audible device for when you're out wiggling wires. oh and my 6.0l glow plug remover before ford came out with one.
  6. When you replace the cover dont forget to cut the bedplate seal when removing it!
  7. Do the 2008's come with z-rated tires....how about some "P-diddy" 24's to match 'em!
  8. Are these the already updated coolers failing and what is actually causing them to go bad. I know I have replaced them when the engine gets overheated like when the head gaskest blow but other than that what is the root cause?
  9. I'm going on week 2 working for a city as a mechanic. The pace is much more relaxing than always being stressed out in a flatrate shop. I'm trying to catch on to "it'll be done when its done" and " if it needs it ,do it". I have no idea why it took me so long to do this. Yeah it was a little pay cut over all but the hours are really steady and there is no slow time and got to go, got to go time! and better benifits...4 weeks start accruing after 6 months, i've never had more than 2 weeks in almost 14 years at 2 dealers...good luck!
  10. Hey I did that one a while back too! At least I aint the only one! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif When I do 7.3l injectors I always remove the glow plug and then reinstall the valve cover with couple of bolts to purge any oil or fuel out of the cylinder and could you imagine what the tech next to me looked like the one time i forget to put the valve cover bolts in and crank it as he is walking by in the front of the vehicle.. luckily he was wearing safety glasses because his eyes were the only thing that were clean! duhhh!
  11. Speaking the 6.4l and mods...anyone hear of any computer inhancements that will provide any extra clues to a pcm that has been chipped and then removed prior to bringing it in? I did the new model stuff on fmcdealer and there was not any mention of that, though i did see something about a new protocol.
  12. By the way does anyone know of any build dates that maybe the engine come with the updated fitting and bracket already... i was wondering dueing my recent 2006 ambulance nightmare.
  13. I installed the pump fitting kit in an e-350 bus that on the road test afterwards i heard a loud "pink" and when i got back to the shop oil was leaking out of the now cracked cover. Now i check clearance after each one...
  14. We see alot of the delaminations here for some reason. One company each truck gets a tank aboput every 5ooo miles. I personally feel its a supplier issue but just my opinion. Note that on the 6.0l doing the inlet restriction to rule out a delaminated tank is useless since there isnt a filter in the tank pickup anymore. It plugs up both fuels on the 6.0l and i've seen it damage injetcor due toi the lack in fuel pressure.
  15. I beleieve one of mine scored me poorly because i didnt schedule their first appointment...go figure!
  16. Without the lock you can use a socket on the end of a long extension or extensions. I forget what size socket i used but you can tap it on with a hammer and then use your ratchet to lower the tire. I beleieve it was like a 9/16 12 point.
  17. In my old shop we would use the borescope on every 4.0 ohv that we suspected had a cracked head. The old rotunda one with the 90 degree end showed the crack everytime....for future help i guess :-)
  18. Its a crack cylinder head guaranteed! #3 and #4 always crack between the seats. A new plug cures it for a limited time until until the plug goes bad again. I've seen it a few hundred times here. recommend both heads!
  19. do we really need 7 radiators and a fuel cooling system? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hitthefan.gif I sure hope they road test this one before they release it to the public!
  20. I was foreman and commuting 200 miles a day before i changed to a locate dealer. i'm just a regular tech now and have no worries about anything except my own vehicles. what a relief but on the other hand i went from an hourly shop to a flat rate shop and cant call in sick whenever i need a mental health day. there is always pluses and minuses.
  21. I've done the test and it seems they all pass it but when you go and drive it and check mgp under wot the vgt goes to 15% which means the vanes are stuck...go figure!
  22. I've found that our parts dept cant locate the numbers in the ford data base unless you look them up for an econline then it shows the part numbers..what a pain!
  23. Got home today to find a message on the answering machine from the service manager down at acura wanting to talk about me coming over there... no 6.0l ambulances that dont start and no jacked up f350 that i need a ladder to climb in and out of. any suggestions?
  24. Good reason to check icp voltage and psi together. i once was stung on 7.3 where it went to the default of 725... not sure what is on a 6.0
  25. Has anyone seen where the chassis cab f-series fuel tanks start to delaminate on the inside. This also causes low fuel pressure and i have had my first 6.0l with this and so far i have replaced 3 injectors on it. All others have been 7.3l's.
