Hey guys, i have an 04 international schoolbus, i just need to see if anyone knows the torque spec for the front wheel bearing, i dont have a service manual for it. thanks

sorry, i'll have the VIN this afternoon. another 12 hour day, on a saturday. and i dont have ISIS cuz the state doesnt want to pay for it. i'm lucky i have service manuals for my some of my buses

its an air brake bus, and yes the wheel bearing adjustment. my international dealer isnt in the shop today, and i have bus inspections monday and need the truck out of my shop

uh yeah, huge difference. also now i'm doing all the fighting to get the tools in my shop, dont have anyone higher up to do it for me. new experience, but not half bad.

 

sooner or later they'll get the point that i need certain things to be able to repair these trucks, and training to repair them correctly once more and more technology gets applied to them. well..hopefully atleast lol

You might want to print this out, as there's a lot of stuff here.

 

 

Oddly enough, the bearing adjustment procedure is not in the service manual under front suspension, brakes, wheels, steering, or anywhere else I could find. I did find an old TSI letter that seems to still be current as it is still in the online ISIS. I know the school bus fleets I teach go through hell with the bearing adjustment, because the troopers check every one and have a tight cutpoint for go/nogo on the kingpins. The way they check them gives a wide variation depending on the size and strength of the tech- a small guy gets a smaller reading than a big strapping guy gets with the dial indicator. FWIW, I don't agree with IH's spec of .001"-.010" end play in a bearing and no preload. Bearings have the longest life with a small amount of preload, but the operative word is small. If there's just a bit too much preload on the bearing, life plummets and safety concerns appear.

Wheels Bearing Adjustment Procedure

 

 

DESCRIPTION

 

 

This TSI replaces TSI-91-17-02R. Discard TSI-91-17-02R.

 

Service personnel may misinterpret the wheelbearing adjustment information as listed in the WHEELS, RIMS AND TIRE section of Master Service Manuals CTS-4001 and CTS-5000.

 

The wheel bearing adjustment procedures listed in the Master Service Manuals are intended to result in a .001 to .010 inch (.0254 to .254 mm) end play with NO PRELOAD for front and rear axle wheel bearings. Longer seal life will result with a .001 to .005 inch (.254 to .1254 mm) end play (clearance) and should be strived for (measure after jam nut is torqued or cotter key is installed). Verify the amount of end play with a dial indicator.

 

NOTE: When replacing front axle or rear axle wheel bearings, new bearings must be seated to insure maximum service reliability. After the bearing and hub are assembled on the spindle, install the bearing adjustment nut. Tighten the adjustment nut to 120-140 ft. lbs. (163-190 Nm), while rotating the hub to seat the bearing. Back off the adjusting nut 1/2 turn and follow the end play adjustment procedure for the type of bearing retention system being serviced as follows:

 

 

 

 

The following information is provided to clarify the wheel bearing adjustment procedure for the different bearing retention systems used on Navistar vehicles.

 

 

JAM NUT INSTALLATIONS (DOUBLE NUT)

 

 

 

 

 

Front Axle

 

Front Axle ( Figure 1 and Figure 2 )

 

1. After the wheel hub, bearing and inner nut are assembled on the spindle, rotate the wheel and hub assembly while tightening the inner nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). If new bearing(s) is being installed, refer to NOTE below.

 

NOTE: When replacing front axle or rear axle wheel bearings, new bearings must be seated to insure maximum service reliability. After the bearing and hub are assembled on the spindle, install the bearing adjustment nut. Tighten the adjustment nut to 120-140 ft. lbs. (163-190 Nm), while rotating the hub to seat the bearing. Back off the adjusting nut 1/2 turn and follow the end play adjustment procedure for the type of bearing retention system being serviced.

 

 

 

 

2. Back off the inner nut 1/4 turn.

 

3. Install the locking washer.

 

4. Install the jam nut and tighten to 100-150 ft. lbs. (136-203 Nm).

 

5. Bend lock over one flat of the jam nut. This applies to both round or tab type locks.

1. After the wheel hub, bearing and adjusting nut are assembled on the axle tube, rotate the wheel and hub assembly while tightening the inner nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). If new bearing(s) is being installed, refer to NOTE below.

 

NOTE: When replacing front axle or rear axle wheel bearings, new bearings must be seated to insure maximum service reliability. After the bearing and hub are assembled on the spindle, install the bearing adjustment nut. Tighten the adjustment nut to 120-140 ft. lbs. (163-190 Nm), while rotating the hub to seat the bearing. Back off the adjusting nut 1/2 turn and follow the end play adjustment procedure for the type of bearing retention system being serviced.

 

 

 

 

2. Back off the inner nut 1/4 turn.

 

3. Install the locking washer.

 

4. Tighten the jam nut as follows:

 

a. Lock nut up to and including 3 1/4 inches (82.55 mm) with bend type lock washer. Tighten the jam nut to 250-275 ft. lbs. (339-373 Nm). After the jam nut is tightened, bend one tab over the jam nut.

 

b. Doweled adjusting nut 3 3/8 inches (85 mm) and larger with pierced lock washer. Tighten the jam nut to 350-375 ft. lbs. (475-508 Nm).

2. Back off the inner nut 1/8 turn.

 

3. Install the stamped locking device over the adjusting nut. The locking device can be installed in a number of positions and should be installed so the cotter key can be installed without rotating the adjusting nut. If the stamped locking device cannot be installed in any position, back the nut off slightly to allow the stamped locking device to be installed.

Castellated Nut

 

Castellated Nut ( Figure 6 )

 

1. After the wheel hub, bearing and castellated nut are installed, rotate the wheel and hub assembly while tightening the castellated nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). If new bearing(s) is being installed, refer to NOTE above.

 

2. Back off the castellated nut 1/8 turn.

 

3. The castellated nut is secured with a cotter key through the castellated portion of the nut and one of the two holes drilled in the spindle. If the cotter key does not align with the hole in the spindle (either horizontal or vertical), back off the nut to the first position in which the cotter key can be installed.

BEARING END PLAY VERIFICATION

 

 

 

 

This procedure can be used on either steer or drive axles. The bearing must be fully installed before checking end play (cotter key installed or jam nut jammed). Use a dial indicator to measure hub end play with respect to the spindle or axle tube. Mount the dial indicator at the bottom of the wheel (remove hub cap or axle shaft), or on the drum or hub as illustrated in Figure 7 . Grasp drum, hub or tire at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position ( Figure 7 ). First push, then pull evenly on the drum, hub or tire to measure the amount of end play. Note total indicator reading.

COTTER KEY INSTALLATION

 

 

 

 

The cotter key should be inserted with the long tang toward the end of the spindle. Bend the long tang of the cotter key over end of spindle. Clip remaining tang, leaving just enough stock to bend down against side of nut (refer to Figure 8 ).

Online ISIS shows two open recalls on this bus: having open recalls leaves your fleet at risk if there is a failure and someone is hurt. These are simple recalls, but they are still recalls. Your fleet manager should have access to online ISIS where these can easily be checked.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE CLARIFICATION

 

There has been some confusion with regard to the inspection procedure for the top joint. The INSPECTION PROCEDURE instructions stated: "Measure up approximately 20 inches from the drip rail. The inspection measurement can be taken on either the right or left side of the bus. Only one side is required."

 

The instructions that were developed were intended to take into account the possible variation due to manufacturing from side to side. Therefore, it is NOT necessary to perform the inspection measurement on both sides of the vehicle.

 

However, regardless of which side of the bus the inspection is performed on, if it is found that the measurement does not fall within the 1 1/8 inch criteria, then that joint must be repaired per the instructions outlined in the letter. In this situation the screws only have to be added across the panel until the measurement does comply with the 1 1/8 inch acceptance criteria.

 

If only a few (3 or less) rivets at/or above the measurement location of 20 inches exceed the 1 1/8 inch criteria, NO repair is required.

 

ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE

 

IC Corporation had mailed to the affected customers the following notice: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. IC Corporation has decided that certain IC and American Transportation CE, RE and FE school buses may fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 221, "School Bus Emergency Body Joint Strength."

 

One or more joints that connect the roof top sheets may not meet the requirement of FMVSS 221. In the event of an accident involving the roof of the bus, the joint may separate. Separation of the joint may cause injury or death.

 

MODELS INVOLVED

 

 

The affected CE and FE model buses were built from September 1, 1993 through August 28, 2003 and the affected RE model buses were built from March 7, 1995 through August 28, 2003.

 

ACTIONS YOU SHOULD TAKE

 

 

The customer was told to inspect the identified buses following the inspection procedure outlined below. Any joint that exceeds the 1 1/8-inch measurement when using the inspection procedure must have the next joint forward repaired using the repair procedure below.

 

 

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

 

 

 

 

The customer was told if they would prefer their dealer to make this inspection at no cost, to contact their dealer and make the arrangements. They were also told if they preferred to make this simple inspection to follow these instructions. The inspection requires measuring the rear end of the top sheet to the first row of rivets.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measure the distance from the back edge of the top sheet to the centerline of the first row of rivets. Note the most rear top sheet is attached to the rear cap with only one row of rivets and the measurement is taken to that row of rivets. If this distance exceeds 1 1/8 (1.12) inches the next joint, which contains the covered end of the same sheet involved in the measurement, may be noncompliant and must be repaired. Make sure that the measurement is from the edge of the metal and not the sealer that may have oozed from the joint. If it is equal to or less than 1 1/8 (1.12) inches, the joint is compliant and does not need to be repaired.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The 1 1/8-inch measurement at the rivet line at the rear end of the top sheet being measured determines if the joint at the forward end of the same sheet is compliant.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Continue this inspection procedure for the remaining top sheets except the top sheet above the right entrance door. This top sheet above the right entrance door, which attaches to the front cap does not require inspection. Therefore do not measure the row of rivets above the entrance door rear doorpost; it is not part of the inspection procedure.

 

If all of the joints are found to be compliant during the inspection process, IC needs to be informed. Authorized dealers should use the warranty system using code "1" for this notification. Others should check box # 1 of the " AUTHORIZATION FOR RECALL SERVICE " card, sign and date and place it in the mail. In lieu of returning the " AUTHORIZATION FOR RECALL SERVICE " card, IC will accept a signed list of units that were inspected and found to be compliant. This list must contain at least the last eight characters of the VIN and must be mailed or faxed to our Compliance Department. If a joint is determined to be noncompliant when measured by the preceding process, please follow the repair procedure.

 

 

REPAIR PROCEDURE

 

 

 

 

WARNING:

 

To prevent serious eye injury, always wear safe eye protection when you perform vehicle maintenance or service.

To avoid property damage, personal injury, or death when servicing the vehicle, park on a flat level surface, set the parking brake, turn the engine off and chock the wheels.

In-line with the rear most row of rivets in the non-compliant joint; screws must be added between every other rivet. See sketch below for an example. Drill a .1590 diameter hole (drill size 21) for each screw required. Insert the screw and use matching touch up paint if required. The screws that should be used for this repair are pre-painted either in white or yellow and have been dipped to provide sealing of the hole.

 

Authorized dealers should purchase these screws from their parts depot. Others may return the " AUTHORIZATION FOR RECALL SERVICE " card with box # 8 checked and circling yellow or white screws to match your vehicle roof color and we will ship the parts directly to you at no charge. If you prefer, instead of returning the above card you may call, fax, mail to our Compliance Department or email to kathy.anders@ic-corp.com, and we will ship the parts directly to you at no charge. Provide at least the last eight characters of the VIN for the units requiring repair, how many joints need to be repaired and the color screws needed. The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle that is subject to a vehicle recall campaign must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after a tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within 60 days, the owner may be entitled to replacement with an identical or reasonable equivalent vehicle at no charge, or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

 

To avoid having to replace a vehicle or refund the purchase price, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner to repair the affected vehicle as soon as possible.

The heater blower motor located in certain entrance door stepwell heater units and rear wall mounted heater units may fail in low speed operation causing elevated temperatures that can result in ignition of any nearby combustible materials resulting in possible property damage, personal injury, or death.

 

MODELS INVOLVED

 

 

This Safety Recall involves certain BE, CE, and FE model buses built 2/2/00 thru 6/2/08 with entrance door stepwell heater feature code 0048PMS or 0548001 and/or a rear wall mounted heater feature code 0048TAR or 0048PSX.

 

 

OWNER NOTIFICATION

 

 

Dealers involved in the recall process will be furnished a listing of owner names and addresses to enable them to follow up with owners and have the vehicles corrected. Use of this listing must be limited to this campaign because the list may contain information obtained from state motor vehicle registration records and the use of such motor vehicle registration data for purposes other than this campaign is a violation of law in several states.

 

 

Service Procedure

 

 

 

 

WARNING:

 

Park vehicle on hard flat surface, turn the engine off, and set the parking brake. Failure to do so may result in property damage, personal injury and/or death.

Block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving in both directions. Failure to do so may result in property damage, personal injury and/or death.

 

 

 

 

WARNING:

Allow components in stepwell and/or rear wall heater units to cool before servicing. Failure to do so may result in property damage, personal injury and/or death.

Place the engine start switch and heater blower motor control switch(s) on the driver's control panel in the "off" position. Failure to do so may cause an electrical short resulting in property damage, personal injury and/or death.

 

 

 

 

 

Blower Motor Control Switch Interim Action Reversal

 

One option of the recall interim action was to disconnect the blower motor low speed electrical circuit by de-pinning a wire at the blower motor control switch(s). This procedure is to inspect for this interim repair action and reverse it, if necessary.

 

1. Locate the stepwell and/or rear wall mounted heater blower motor switch on the driver control panel.

2. Remove the panel cover that holds the switch(s), remove the harness connector from the switch and find cavity 3 of the harness connector (numbered on the side of connector).

 

3. If cavity 3 has a wire in it:

 

a. No repair is needed.

 

b. Install harness connector onto switch.

 

c. Install switch panel back onto driver's control panel.

 

d. Blower motor control switch inspection is complete.

 

4. If cavity 3 is empty:

 

a. Locate the 12 gauge wire with terminal that was de-pinned as part of the recall interim action.

 

b. Install the wire terminal in cavity 3. The tab on the wire terminal should snap into the harness connector to keep it fastened. Gently pull on wire to verify.

 

 

 

 

 

 

c. Install harness connector onto switch.

 

d. Install switch panel onto driver's control panel.

 

e. Blower motor control switch interim action reversal is complete.

1. Remove and set aside grab handle, dash panel cover, filter access cover, filter, and heater unit cover.

 

2. Disconnect the electrical harness connector at the blower motor assembly and remove it from heater unit.

 

3. Remove blower motor mounting plate from assembly. Discard blower motor.

 

4. Install a new blower motor on mounting plate.

 

5. Visually inspect the old blower motor and determine if its electrical harness is tie strapped to the blower motor body as shown. Add or remove tie straps to the new replacement blower motor body and its harness to copy the old blower motor set up.

 

 

 

 

 

 

6. Connect electrical harness connector at the blower motor assembly and install it in heater unit.

 

7. Install heater unit cover, filter, filter access cover, dash panel cover, and grab handle.

 

8. Verify that blower motor operates appropriately in off, low speed, and high speed control switch positions.

 

9. Discard the blower motor that was replaced.

ADMINISTRATIVE/DISTRIBUTOR RESPONSIBILITY (U.S. & POSSESSIONS)

 

 

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle that is subject to a vehicle recall campaign must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after a tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within 60 days, the owner may be entitled to replacement with an identical or reasonable equivalent vehicle at no charge, or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

 

Dealers must correct all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to the owner, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

 

Dealers should proceed immediately to make necessary correction to units in inventory. All inventory vehicles subject to this recall campaign must be corrected prior to sale, transfer or delivery. If vehicles have been sold or transferred and you are in receipt of Customer Notification Letters and Authorization for Recall Service cards for those vehicles, transfer location or customer must be notified immediately from your dealer location.

 

Dealers must make every effort to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner to repair his or her vehicle as soon as possible. However, consistent with the customer notification, dealers are expected to complete the repairs on the mutually agreed upon service date.

Talk to your boss about getting DVD ISIS ($175-250) or online ISIS (commonly free to fleets). DVD ISIS can be bought from your IH parts department and online must be applied for and approved by a DP (no big deal). Commonly the "spec" guy puts online in the spec when he's writing a bus order.

 

There is NO EXCUSE for trying to fix IH products without service information, because it is cheap and easily available. The generic spec we were given in trade school , for a tapered roller bearing set, was 0.0005" end play.(5 ten thousands of an inch). Basically non measureable end play, but no preload. Im not sure if the spec may grow as the size of bearings grows. My training was automotive, not c-t. I also beleive it is better to be slightly loose than too tight, and have seen firsthand what happens when tapered roller sets are overtightened. ( by DIY-ers, many times.)

I've always known that bearing life is best with a "bit" of preload, but it is a fine line to determine how much is correct. I've always loaded my wheel bearings slightly on the final adjustment, probably 5-10ftlbs or so, to achieve a preload of a thou or two. Even though this is against mfr recommendations, I seem to have had the best bearing life in regular dry grease hubs this way. This idea or concept grew from overhauling diffs and seeing how heavily loaded the bearings are there. If they can last for zillions of miles with that heavy of a preload, certainly a greased bearing can also live longer with a slight load on it. Wet hubs could probably live with even more preload due to the cooling effect of the liquid oil. Think of the preload needed to create the proper rotational drag needed when setting up a pinion bearing! I don't have a number in front of me, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's .010" or more.

When selecting the preload force for a bearing arrangement it should be remembered that the stiffness is only marginally increased when the preload exceeds a given optimum value, whereas friction and consequently heat generation increase and there is a sharp decrease in bearing service life as a result of the additional, constantly acting load. Diagram 5 indicates the relationship between bearing life and preload/clearance.

Because of the risk that an excessive preload implies for the operational reliability of a bearing arrangement, and because of the complexity of the calculations normally required to establish the appropriate preload force, it is advisable to consult the SKF application engineering service.

It is also important when adjusting preload in a bearing arrangement, that the established value of the preload force, determined either by calculation or by experience, is achieved with the least possible scatter. This means, for example, for bearing arrangements with tapered roller bearings, that the bearings should be turned several times during adjustment so that the rollers do not skew and so that the roller ends are in correct contact with the guide flange of the inner ring. If this is not the case, the results obtained during inspection or by measurements will be false and the final preload can be much smaller than the requisite value.

 

 

 

Bearings running loose have a shorter life than those running at zero clearance, and bearings at a “bit” of preload live even longer. The problem is determining what a “bit” of preload is. Even SKF doesn’t want to put a number on it, and rightly so, as the “number” would change dramatically with the bearing type and application. I seem to remember .002-.003” preload was where most bearings live the longest at, although I can no longer find that number in print. I’ve always taken into account how much a new bearing “wears in” or loosens up on it’s own, also, and perhaps set brand new bearings a thou tighter than used ones.

Exactly, and to further that, what about heat? Does a bearing tighten up or loosen off as the parts themselves heat up?

I think the preload on diff bearings is marginal, (i had a spec for carrier preload somewhere, I'll try to find it) once correct rotational drag is achieved, the smallest movement of the pinion nut on a crush sleeve setup can go way over spec. As well on a dana 80 style diff, ive taken out a .002" shim from between the bearings and had pinion preload skyrocket out of spec, so i think were talking .001" ish preoad at best. Also in a diff it is very important for the gears to stay in place, so no end play can be tolerated. Like you say, i think oil bath gears are alot more tolerant to preload. I beleive in a dry grease bearing, 0 lash or very slight end play would be desireable. I'm gonna dig out my old trade school books and see if they give a reasoning behind it.

My take on tapered bearings was old school, snug down and back off a 1/4 turn. Always worked pretty well for me. I know not the way by the book but fairly close.
