290k runs rough and stalls

I have 99 with 290k on it. It will start and run fine but loses power and stalls when trying to take off. The only code it has is p0264 inj 2 circuit low. I ohm injs at valve cover and all the same. I ran a power balance and it passes. However if I hold rpms above 1500 for about a 1 min truck loses cyls and dies. I verified this several times. If I run power balance when engine is running rough it flags cyl 2 and 8 every time. However if I run a inj buzz right after concern starts it still only fails inj 2. I have inspected icp. The connector is in good shape and is not seeping oil. I have tried unplug icp with no change. Truck has had new injs 2 years ago. It has also had a idm installed in Dec. I am planning on tell him I need to check compression and then replace left bank injs. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

I have not checked it, but it already has new pump and filters

Well, not to break your balls, but, just because it has new filters and a new fuel pump you should not assume that fuel pressure is good. I have seen a few of these trucks over the years, new pump, new filters and so on... only to find the pick up screen or the relief valve missing from the pick-up and the engine sucking air... or the screens in the DTRM in the pickup clogged pulling fuel pressure down...

Get my point? I am not suggesting dropping the tank at this point, but for the amount of time it takes to connect a fuel pressure gage you can confirm pressure is good and elininate that from the scenario and possible prevent yourself from chasing your tail for no good reason. Posted Image

Finally got back to truck. I checked fuel pressure at left head and has 50 psi. The truck has a bad fuel knock when concern is present. After checking fuel pressure I removed valve cover. I ran engine with valve cover and now I can not duplicate concern.

Typically what happens is under high fuel demands the tank pick-up will pull in the debris and cause a restriction, when it sits the debris will fall away and all is good. If you can't hook up and roadtest while monitoring inlet restriction, use datalogger and monitor ICP/IPR, when the restriction happens and restricts fuel flow, ICP will raise to try and compensate to keep the load up on the engine.

Read like you didn't have the issue at 50 PSI, sorry. Try unplugging #2 injector and running it. It may be causing IDM issues if it is buggered. Bad injectors can mess with the IDM sometimes. You get a dead short in the injector and all hell breaks loose.

BTW never trust a flagged #8 injector on cylinder balance, unless it has the old style CMP in it. Try using the enhanced method with the injector cut out box(if you have one) if the power balance is your concern.

Is that the left valve cover you removed? Funny it seemed to clear up with the bulkhead connector disturbed???

Just thinking out loud.....

Holy crap...Nice catch Jim. I think the with everyone focusing on fuel pressure, we forgot about the chaffing on that valve cover.

  • 3 weeks later...

I put truck back together and has been running ok. I think it had a bad connect at UVC to valve cover. It already has new UVC so I could not put the plastic clips in. I wanted to put new valve cover gasket and UVC. But, customer said since truck was assembled he would take his chances and drive it. It has been two weeks and no calls.
