Interesting that every tech is supposed to be diesel certified, so wouldn't it be reasonable to think you could pinpoint the offending parties? The high numbers could be linked to the individual, no? Remember the original Diesel spin event? Well, the highest payout went to a tech that earned around $1500. Next tech up was around half that and the rest lower. Ford suits lauded the techs' high number as a show of how successful the promo was. No one mentioned that he may have "gamed" the system. As a diesel tech it didn't pass my smell test, but maybe I'm just jealous. Yeah, that's what it is. My feeling is the better techs will slowly leave out of frustration and Ford will be left with the thieves and hacks. Good techs will try to work within the new rules and be overwhelmed. The others will simply exploit new loop holes.

upcoming roundtable meeting
G. Bedford replied to Brad Clayton's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I had heard they were attempting to develop a tool to test fuel pump delivery in the bay instead of the road test WOT procedure. Possible? We'll see. -
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/20/its-apparently-official-the-ford-ranger-is-dead-come-2009/7 I did a PDI on a Ranger last week and noticed the fuel mileage ratings were about the same as my '05 F150 4x4 with the 5.4l/3V. Sad.

One of our techs was doing a cab off and while clearing out the interior came across a HotShot cattle prod. The model had a couple electodes that stick out past the tip, kind of like those hand held tasers. He touches the button on the handle and is disappointed that no arc could be seen across the electrodes. So, he figures the battery is dead. What he didn't realize was that the button only charges the units capacitors. Seeing the tech in the next stall leaning over a fender, he jabs him in the back of the thigh. To his horror the tech hollers out and damn near goes through the roof, instead of just turning around and telling him to quit poking him. Good lord, I thought we would have to call the cops. Now, that was some funny stuff!!!

Ford still sees nothing wrong with the 6.0L
G. Bedford replied to ninja972r's topic in The Water Cooler
Couple good threads to monitor on the Ford boards about tickets getting kicked back. On the Service section titled "charge backs 6.0 diesel" and the Warranty Administrators section titled "Diesel 'Part not Defective' chargebacks". Good info to prepare you for what is ahead. -
For those with access to the Ford boards there is more on this topic in the Tech to Tech section titled "Prior approval for 6.0l headgaskets/EGR coolers....".

I had this one pulled on me and couldn't help but laugh along. Get a car with memory seats and program it as far ahead and high as possible. Now I'm 6'2" and hop in and slam the door, turn the ignition on, by the time I realize what is going on the steering wheel is in my chest and my knee caps are in the bolster plate. Man, was I jammed in tight. I was pissed at first but by the time I got out I could only laugh.

It won't fit through. I added a picture to the Photo section showing the nut laying on the screen. Personally, I have only had roller rocker needle bearings pass and wipe out the pump. Hope this helps ya.

Be careful, Aaron. If you follow the steps in the WSM there is no need to evac/recharge the A/C. The condensor is simply secured out of the way(step 14). Your warranty administrator may be paying you but an auditor will catch it and deny the entire claim. The auditor we had last year was very knowlegable with repair steps, but also some of the "cheats" less reputable techs were pulling to increase their hours. If you prefer to evac/recharge to ease the repair for yourself, OK, but I woudn't claim the ops.

I saw verify60 when it first came out and used it on vehicles with multiple concerns. After our first audit it pretty much got dropped. Hot potato, ya know.

Ford still sees nothing wrong with the 6.0L
G. Bedford replied to ninja972r's topic in The Water Cooler
We recently had a HPOP ticket kicked back, too. They said it passed their bench test and was producing pressure. Well, gee, I guess we must be missing the Rotunda HPOP bench tester Ford sent every dealer like they did the on-car brake lathe. So, I guess we can only do the tests per the manual in a process of elimination until the causal part is identified at our shop. We were not as lucky as you to get the claim paid. Maybe we should start having the vehicle owner pay the bill first, so if the ticket gets bounced we are covered like the aftermarket warranties. -

The .3 is just for these components. Kinda like what you get for engines or trannies when you do prior approval. All other Hotline call times are still freebies.

6.4 EGR cooler failure!
G. Bedford replied to Coolcat390's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well, we also use Hotline, but found out the hard way that auditors trump Hotline. Hotline approval/recommendations are not a "get out of jail free" card. As stated in the W&P Manual "Phone approval, video imaging approval or TECHNICAL HOTLINE(emphasis added) involvement with a repair does not negate dealer responsibility to adhere to the provisions of the Warranty and Policy Manual and to verify that repairs are needed due to a defect". So the next time you have, say, a combustion gas leak into the fuel system on a 6.0l and Hotline says to replace all the injectors on that bank. Think twice. Hotline doesn't care about your 126 and they won't be the ones charged back the ticket for over-repair. If what the Hotline says to do doesn't meet your smell own test then don't just barge ahead and do it because they said to. You are held responsible by the boys carrying the brief cases and wearing wing tip shoes. -
6.4 EGR cooler failure!
G. Bedford replied to Coolcat390's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
We have replaced a few horizontal coolers. The first rig, both coolers were removed and benched tested to find only the horizontal was bad. Ford kicked the ticket back and would not pay for the time on the vertical cooler since it had not failed. How are you to tell where the coolant is entering unless you test? So now we play the odds and just do the horizontal cooler. -
See that on June 1 we will be required to call in before repairs/replacement to oil or EGR coolers, HPOP, or head gaskets. Why did we go through all this training to be second guessed by someone on the phone, who will come up with even more tests that won't be paid for? Deep breath, slowly exhale.....

6.0L egr valve stop sale!
G. Bedford replied to Hempstead's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I think this will become more common as Ford pinches their parts suppliers more and more to contain costs. Quality will suffer. -
Just lost the coolant loss TSB 8-3-7, too. New # 8-11-3.
-
If you compare the TSB's you will see that 6-17-06 paid you to work your way in to the HPOP, whereas 8-09-09 pays to work your way out. If you followed 6-17-06 properly you would find the leaks under the valve covers first, since the covers would be off to do the stand-off block tests. Ford realized most techs just jumped to the HPOP first, playing the odds, and grabbed the extra cash. TSB 8-09-09 does not pay less, it just pays according to how the repair was being attacked in the field. The change was simply a matter of time in coming.
-
Does anyone know if the TSB 6-17-06 labor ops are any good for a spin yet since it was superceded by 8-09-09?
-
Streamlined diagnosics, baby!!!! Check continuous codes, clear codes, toss a DPFE and see if it sticks and finish with a KOER test. If the KOER passes, pocket your .4 and holler NEXT! Gotta love TSB 4-11-1. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk2.gif

I get the feeling the dealer is paying a portion of the costs of this program. I wonder how many spins Dave will need to make up for the 17 hour loss on the 6.4 he was talking about in his post?

Tech next to me is doing head gaskets on a late '03 F-350(ICP in the rocker cover). Got the cab off and first thing we noticed is, it has a '03 turbo on a '04 pedestal bracket. One of the other dealers in the area put a turbo on last year. Go figure.
