  1. It originally had a bank 2 guide failure. previous tech replaced that. I cleaned out pieces of the guide when I went after replacing the head and setting the timing. (both cams set) it left me and a couple months later said more noise, can I replace the bank 1 cassette. I accepted and before he got it to me quit running. I removed the engine and did the job looking for damage. none found going in. upon completion still no start. diagnosed the fuel pump crapped out. installed fuel pump. fired right up, but now this clacking noise. since my first post I rechecked the base timing, inspected the valve train, spun it over by hand nothing found, checked the compression on the whole bank (1) have 150psi on each. pulled the starter just to double check I didn't leave and converter nuts loose. I'm probably gonna pull the valve cover again and get my borescope from the shop tomorrow so I can look deeper into things. No Good deed goes unpunished.
  2. First time actually doing chains on a 4.0 (helping out a friend) has turned to crap. 02 Ranger with 4.0 and 91,000 miles This all started out bad: He brought it to a shop to have timing components replaced for typical noise. Months later he towed it out as a non running vehicle. I accepted his plea for help. initially figured it was an small oversight somewhere. something not plugged in, bad ground, crank sensor, what ever. found no compression on bank 2. Began disassembly to pull the head found that they only installed a new guide, and never actually set the timing, bank 1 valve cover was never removed. I replaced the head, chain, sprockets, tensioner, etc... as he had bought a kit, but opted to just do the left bank. a few months later I get it back and the other bank now is making noise. (no surprise here) I did the bank one chain, sprocket and guide replacement with a new tensioner get it back together and running and I have a constant clacking noise now. no codes, I only have a generic scan tool at home so limited data. I immediately checked compression thinking the worst. decent compression. both banks. (only sampled 1 from each) I'm gonna pull the valve cover off but doubtful I'll be able to see much. This is my first 4.0 chain replacement despite having 10 years of Ford dealer exp and 13 independent shop exp. any words of advice?
  3. Never touched the pick up tube. replaced the oil filter adapter end of the cooler. (Ford Unit)
  4. no rags used that weren't either in my hand or on the floor. However at this point I may remove the drain plug and dump the oil to take a peek inside.
  5. 98 Ford E cutaway bus chassis 7.3 removed engine, resealed pan and oil cooler. installed new mechanical fuel pump. after reassembly, now has no base oil pressure, with filter off cranked 15 sec and get about a quart of oil out. high pressure reservoir is empty as well. Oil pump (base) was untouched during this repair. dumb question: what am I missing other than the gerotor pump coincidentally failing during the repair process?
  6. They've had a better diesel truck for well over a decade now.
  7. I have an 04 F-150 seems to be leaking from rear of oil pan gasket. I cleaned off pan and ran engine and no leaks present, then test drove and re-inspected finding traces of oil around pan gasket. I have replaced pan gasket on two different occaisions with no luck at stopping the leak. leading me to question source of the leak. in my mind a rear main seal would leak while running even if vehicle is stationary. correct? (BTW, THERE IS NO OIL TRACES NEAR THE HEADGASKET AREA)
  8. 95 Dodge 3500 dually with a CUMMINS (Red) 89 Dodge Dakota currently 400 cid but building a 500 (white) 72 Jeepster Commando 304 (Camo) 66 Dodge Coronet 500 (Yellow) Dad bought it when he was in high school. Wife drives a 01 VW Jetta TDI (Black) and a 96 Jeep Cherokee sport (Blue) also have but seldom drive 89 caravan,89 silloette, 89 v6 dakota 94 Duster, 77 chev. p30 panel van and a 67 Coronet R/T going to restify for youngest son. Wow I think I need to do some "thinning out"
  9. I am a man of many Hobbys. I brew my own beers, wines and hard ciders. Currently have a Hard cider, Irish stout, cherry wheat, cream ale and american amber fermenting in basement (all 5 gallon batches.) I keg the majority of what I brew I have a fridge with 3 5 gal kegs in it in the garage. currently have a brown ale an IPA and a hard lemonade in the kegs. I play guitar and Bass, currently not in any bands but I am being hounded to pick up the bass and play for a "bar band" (not likely to happen) I enjoy Classic cars and drag racing. I have a big block 66 Dodge Coronet and a big block 89 Dodge Dakota. I have a stroker 500ci in the works for the Dakota and the Coronet is likely going to get new paint over the winter. I also am getting back into bowhunting for bear and whitetailed deer. Past couple years I built a new house and garage so time on computer had been limited and hobbies on hold. feels good to get back into things.
  10. I have one here that has me stumped mainly doe to a complete lack of experience with these. Customer says it runs very rough when first started (cold) and gets better after it warms up. I have checked the glow plug operation and they seem to be working fine. (circuits will light up a headlight and all ohm out.) I did a compression test due to the amount of "dirt" I could see in the intake manifold with the air cleaner off. bank 1 has a high of 410 psi and a low of 300 this is outside Ford's guideline. but I don't wanna rip this thing open without being more sure end result is gonna fix the customers concern. It is a farm truck the owner wants to sell but he doesn't want to sell a turd. Customer has had some things done by others trying to fix this like; injector pump off and sent in for repairs, injectors replaced, all new glow plugs, replaced glow plug harness, glow plug relay. injector cleaner. from what he says this all began one day when he ran it out of fuel (a few years ago) I don't want to be just another guy who has thrown parts at this thing.
  11. could you remove left head off a 6.0 in 2 hours?

I also wear a necklace 24/7 small silver hammer. (Thor's Hammer) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer2.gif
  13. on a warranty vehicle if labor times get cut, as far as I'm concerned parts needed grows. Ford can either pay me to do the work or buy the parts I would have been cleaning. Pay me now or pay me later.
  14. I have so many hobbies that they get to be more work than work is. Although I still love what I do enough that I count it as another of my hobbies. Spring time is ATV time I love to hit the mudholes and find new hunting spots. I have an ongoing project 89 Dodge Dakota with a bigblock (2wd shortbox) fishing is a during the week thing I like to do after work and I take one of my boys with each time I go (have 3 sons 12,15,and 16 yo) I have a small stockyard which has had chickens goats and pigs currently just have the chickens (mmm good pork) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif I play bass and rythem guitar in a band. I'm an avid bowhunter especially when it comes to bears. (they taste mm mmm good too) I crosscountry ski ,ice fish, and snowshoe when winter hits. I do a little blacksmithing from time to time I have a nice homemade coal forge and a factory built gas forge. I don't do much cooking but I do like to flavor some meats in my smoker, I also brew some very good ales and stouts. I also stay active in my umm church I suppose you'd call it. Come to think of it I do feel relaxed while at work.
