Not everybody has welders. Besides, I have gotten really good at it so it doesn't phase me anymore not to mention that I don't think you can use the welding method on everything especially fasteners broken well down below the surface. Correct me if I am wrong about that as I have zero experience with that approach. -
Beydler exhaust manifold drill guides

Fan-freakin-tastic! I had the idea for this years ago but no way to make one. Drilling out broken bolts SQUARELY is sometimes the key to success especially if it's in an aluminum head or you need to rethread the hole. -
Early HPOP Failures

I wish I still had that big coffee mug. How did we make the jump from Vaseline to coffee? You may no longer have the mug but you still keep Vaseline handy? I guess everyone has their priorities. -
Injector cups and Loc-Tite
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I agree but did I not mention there was crap on the lower o-rings which is right in that flat area where they seal? That would be a boat load wouldn't you say? Eh, maybe I am wrong. It just looks like a really sloppy job and there was a bit of clean up to do. I wish I could know for sure. -
This is when you wonder why CABIN FILTERS are not available in Super Duty trucks. If there is a model in Ford's line up that could use one it's that. Can't tell you how many trucks I get in that when I crank the A/C up in the summer and I get a face full of dirt. Oh, and I have to add this: on my final road test with t his truck the blower stopped working... except for high. A new speed control module and it's gone. I am not surprised however as with no airflow to cool it down it probably had been running it little hot. 4 faults with this HVAC box. 4!

We all are familiar with the use of Loc-Tite to seal injector cups to the cylinder heads. It seems as though my shop has had issues with the last three remanufactured engines we have installed in the last year with regard to injector failures - the kind that allow combustion gasses into the fuel rail but without any failures with the copper gaskets at the injector tips or the condition of the cups themselves. This points to an internal failure with the injector. The most recent FAR engine sits in my bay with a second injector failure on one cylinder head. I noticed nothing on the first injector I replaced 100 miles ago. It's back dropping cylinders on the same side. This time I pulled all three of the remaining injectors. In two of the bores I noticed an odd green ring around the top of the injector cups accompanied by a light colored drip mark inside the cup. I scraped some off and though solid, it was softish. It occurred t me that whomever installed the cups was overly liberal with the Loc-Tite and never cleaned up the bore after installing them. There was also evidence of Loc-Tite on the lower fuel o-ring. The truck has a new fuel tank, fuel pump and of course new filters so negative fuel pressure or fuel contamination from the source is not high on my list of possibilities here. The failure TO ME seems to point toward possible contamination from the Loc-Tite. I ran this by the Hot-Lone and they seemed to be quick to dismiss it as a possibility of being the root cause of injector(s) failure. I have my doubts. Contamination is contamination. Opinions or thoughts?

Right hand exhaust manifold

I just finished one up a week ago, had two broken bolts. I pulled the cab, disconnected the right side engine mount and raised the engine with a crane and slipped a 2X4 under the mount to hold the engine up. This gave me plenty of room to drill out the bolts and install thread inserts. I have another waiting to come in for the same exact repair. -

I am an expert at dealing with rust at this point. Have no choice in the matter either. And watch how you say "Yankee" -
HPOP deadheading question
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
It's the pump. I have seen several pumps over the last year or so doing exactly as you describe. And my curious nature has me pulling the pumps apart only to discover the piston cylinder has been rotating inside of the housing evidenced by severe scoring. This can make you really second guess your diagnostics sometimes because your readings can look good... or are they. If the truck stalls when coming to a stop I usually don't think twice any more after eliminating everything else. A new pump will correct the concern. -
He gots a new one.

I scraped it with a wire brush and attempted to flush it with a garden hose but no luck. That crap is in there to stay.

DEF in the fuel tank. My first one

Acts of stupidity cannot be intentional by definition therefore they are accidental. -
A 2009 F550 landscraping truck that had little air movement through the HVAC unit and the mode could not be changed. It just kinda gently blew out all of the vents and the floor. No defrost. I have never seen anything like this. First, I decided that with no DTC's there had to be an obstruction or something broken regarding the blend doors. Out comes the dash and some disassembly and I find a bunch of nuts and bolts, a twig, some pebbles and a bit of dirt preventing the floor defrost door from moving. Put it together and checked. The distribution now worked correctly but still very little air movement. UI pulled the blower motor and inspected/tested it and no problem there. We discovered that the cowl was PACKED with organic debris: broken down leaves, pine needles, twigs and dirt all packed on top of the HVAC inlet. Cleaned that out. Still no air. I suspected the "cores" were plugged at this point. By the way that box assembly is a bitch to get out with a 6.4L!

Hey! I resemble that remark!

You know, Heli-coiling that bolt hole does not look all that bad of an idea considering all of the work and aggravation involved in replacing an otherwise good branch tube. Of course the utmost care in preventing debris from getting into the engine must be taken... Call me crazy if you want to.

Thank you Mr. Brad - I just ordered a DEF heater for TSB 13-10-5. Guess I had better click on the prior-approval tab...

Six times is the number that sticks in my mind. One truck had two stuck valves coming off of the carrier when new. Any way all of the trucks I did this to were permanently fixed to the best of my knowledge.

There are transmission valve body hones you can buy that fit into the valve guides and clean them up nicely. I developed that trick back when i used to see seized valves on the 7.3L... 6.0L and one 6.4. Saved every head. Slap a new valve in it and it's good to go!

Interesting read. I wonder where this engine will turn up. Could be a good repower package?

Good luck with the new job. Now you have more time to work!

Guess those freeze out plugs didn't do their job! There's a P.O.S 4.6L van in our lot with a new water pump and radiator... and a cracked block. I guess the owner didn't have money for antifreeze.
