Avg Pay for TSB 07-21-5
Tony302600 replied to Tony302600's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
bedford....if you follow the TSB it says to do the oil+egr cooler if they are bad, put it back together... testdrive it for HEad gaskets, then dothe head gaskets if they fail the test. -
Speaking of tools.....
Tony302600 replied to Jim Warman's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I swear by my matco toolboox. U figure the amount of times we open, close, the amount of weight on the drawers, my craftsman help up 6months. Now i have a huge matco proffesional box and sit on one of the small drawers for lunch. "The box doesnt make you money," it does when ure not fighting with it to open up one of the overloaded drawers on which the bearings gave out and wont budge. I dislike snap-on, mac tool boxes. Snapon seems as cheap as my old craftsman in build quality. I just plain dont like mac. Matco is the ultimate tool in my opinion, their impact swivel sockets are the best in the business, i love their wrenches. I love snap-on screwdrivers, they just fit perfect in my hand and the ability to add a wrench for extra turning torque has helped me out a lot. I still use a lot of craftsman tools, and would rec. them to anyone. -

I'm just frustrated because without diag its alot more. I understand its a you win some you lose some deal on the 6.0's but for WPI to tell me manager that diesel warranty is high because we're charging ford too much for this TSB is beyond me. Oh well. it just irks me when we (me and the other diesel tech) always have to argue for this TSB with our warranty company. -
WPI ( our shitty warranty processing ) thinks to do this TSB including Diag, egr/oil cooler replacements, putting it back together and then finding out the head gaskets are bad equals to a total of 15.3 hours. Now im going off SLTS and just replacement of oil/egr and then head gaskets is 19ish. Plus diag would be in the 20's. Now i know that you win some you lose some, but they are killing us on this TSB so i was just curious what you guys are getting on average when doing oil/egr coolers, then putting it back together, then doing the head gaskets.

Keith only time I had a P0088 was when the customer filled up with gasoline instead of diesel. ALso had a p0087 and p2291. Flushed out gasoline and drained tank, ran awesome. Funny story.... The guy didnt believe that it was gasoline and was giving the service writer a hard time and calling us liars. SW took the sample and the customer and told him "if this is diesel then it will not light on fire. He poured a helpful amount on the ground and lit it.....customer flew back a foot from the flame, shut his mouth and paid for the mistake. LOL.

Jayson I agree with you a lot. Dishonesty is a major problem in the field.

2004 TURBO FLUTTER WHEN WARM ONLY
Tony302600 replied to OHNO60's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
is ure map reading low and erratic. we've had a bunch like that were map is fluctuating between .3 psi causing repeat po132b. One was broken vane studs in the turbo, and other was y-pipe leaking, and one was turbo breather hose o-ring missing. Yea they are very sensitive and Ford is making a reprogram to make it less sensitive. -
6.0 Oil Leak a month later
Tony302600 replied to SrA_Heise's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Thanks to Jim ive taken the role of "if this was my truck, would i accept this." And ive been doing awesome since. Its probably just that dealer cause we've had, hacked up crap from other dealers also and we look at it like....who the hell did this? That story sucks, makes you think if they're doing that to their customers how Ford is being perceived and people shots about ALL dealerships because of one incompitent one.\ -
i have the adapter bruce, but with all the stuff in the way, i dont like the way i have it setup. I have 3-4 adapters to get to my gauge, then it doesnt sit right. Just curious what you guys use. I dont have a problem checking it in the bay but on test drives, is another issue.
-
Can you guys show some pix of how you check fuel pressure at the secondary filter housing on superduty's? I'm trying to find a different easier way through adapters.
-
The IDM was bought overcounter at this dealership. Maybe its WPI. I dunno. Oh well, you win some you lose some.
-
I know, itsnt that funny

I may still be new to this but 2 days ago I had a 00 7.3 F-350 with 144,000 miles on it. Customer used his programmer for eec test, gets the 1316 ( IDM codes detected ) he calls our parts guys with the code, parts tell him he needs an IDM ( no1 will fess up to who did it). He puts it in, gets it towed in as a no start. Run a power balance, #2,4,6,8, are not contributing, runs like crap, thick black smoke coming out exhaust. I say noway new IDM is bad. Do all my test, no oil coming out bank 2 spill spouts, get our test IDM for shits and giggles. Runs awesome with #2 misfiring. Sell him #2 injector, make a seperate R.O. to service part warranty the IDM he just bought. Manager comes to me today saying Ford will not pay for diag on the IDM, because it is an OTC makes the part. They will only cover powertrain. Anybody know bout this, had this happen to them, think its fair?
-
Damn Keith, See now thats were we get screwed. I had 2 injectors that were soo fricken bad (letting exhaust gases into bank 1 ), i had to get the request to tell me to replace the other 2. So 4 injectors on bank 1. EVERY engineer tells us we have to replace all 4 if even one lets exhaust gases in. This is a excellent company that brings trucks... they get 4. End of story. Asshole customer. U get one.

Fred, that pisses me off. I'm not going to go into it anymore then that. If they are doing this with a car, what else in their lives are they doing to this extent. People need to realize, if they tell the truth, their car will more then likely get fixed twice as fast. Theres plenty of times ive seen techs bash their heads against the wall, then realize its something that the customer did, then the customer goes... oh ya..i forgot to tell you guys about that.

ANd if you read between the lines it says...... "if coking is the cause of hte EGR failure, the appropriate coking TSB MUST be followed to find root cause." I have a feeling people will get burned if they dont follow that tedeous, lenghty, process by warranty auditers. Now if they paid us for this TSB im sure people will do it. ( maybe its WPI at our dealership )

2004 TURBO FLUTTER WHEN WARM ONLY
Tony302600 replied to OHNO60's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Awesome keith, you've summed up what ive learned from this website. Also remember what u told me when i had a wicked drivebility conern which is, turn pids into graphs that arent. e.g. I had a wicked drive conern with bucking and jerking 8 months ago. Keith told me to turn FICMSYNC and SYNC into bar graphs, wala found the graphs going on/off rapidly and u couldnt tell from just looking at the box saying "on/off" Also ive been "tightening up" pid parameters to find int. conerns. That is one of the best thing ive learned to do. ( that came from "advanced engine diag class." -
Lets learn from this one
Tony302600 replied to Tony302600's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
He was an ignorant bastard, badmouthing the truck, the engineers while talking to the service writer. Not even a "thank you" for finding why my truck has been in the shop more then in my driveway. And he was warned that if he comes back for any running problems due to the fuel system, he will have to pay. But now he can go down the street to another dealer who has no clue what we found and go through the same thing we did if he runs them dry. -
I hate posting this but I gotta keep everyone remembering how fun our job is. Other diesel tech gets a early 03. Dies under hard load and whenever it wants. No codes, #1 would int. cut out just sitting in the stall then come back to life. Has been at 5 other dealers, none of them can figure it out. After it dies take the secondary fuel cap off, excessive amounts of air pressure, barely any fuel in the housing. Here comes the balloon test.... hmmm.....nothing... fuel pressure is 45 then drops to 30, then dies. Hotline said replace all injectors on bank 1 because it could be an int. concern on injector 1 letting combustion gases in. I tell him maybe inlet restriction from the tank, take the tank down and check. Removes tank ( By hand, no tank lift ). I looked at him and said "did u just see that we took this tank down by hand" we look at the fuel gauge it says 1/2 full. No fuel in the tank whatsoever. He does the test and finds the gauge is bad. This thing has had 3 fuel pumps, 23 injectors, filter housings, lines, everything in the fuel system replaced at other dealers. All for a bad gauge that always read 1/2 full. Customer says he never looks at it, fills up every week at the same gas station. and no i dont want the cluster. Fun fun fun.

I dont have alot of money to spend on a computer so i was wondering what you guys are using and what you would rec. Memory/ram/speed wise. I know i want a intel duo, non vista computer. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

A question about head-studs...
Tony302600 replied to Alex Bruene's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
we get this lifted, modded F-350, blown head gaskets. The owner even leaves the instructions on "turning ure truck to stock" sitting on the center console clipboard. Finally we gave up and said screw it we'll do them under warranty. Comes in and gives ARP head studs to the service writer and asks if we can put them on. i'll see how that goes i too second that the 6.0 is too overpowered. and why people do headgaskets for degas bottle overflow on e-vans is beyond me. FFFFFFFFFFFFF- that.
