  1. I second the oil cooler replacement along with the short block if the cam and lifters are worn.It really doesn't matter if the oil filter went into bypass, the oil pump always supply's unfiltered oil to the cooler first then it goes to the oil filter. All the Ford diesels do this, stupid design if you ask me.
  2. If you look in the shop manual for E series 6.0 engine removal the only real reason they want you to strip the top of the engine down it to put a support bar in place that goes from the engine support adapter, that bolts to the lower front of the engine, to the right rear of the engine. A chain from the heads using a come a long to the fork lift will do the same thing.
  3. I haven't seen any fail with that low of a mileage but get lots of E series shuttle buses and ambulances around the 125000 to 150000 mile mark. They have a lot of low speed driving and lots of idle time as the hour meters that were installed were reading 15000 to 18000 hrs. I don't strip the top of the engine down like Ford says you have to do to remove them, actually I don't remove anything major from the top except the exhaust down pipe and trans dip stick tube. I remove both oil pans, oil filter housing, motor mounts and frame brackets, AC compressor and power steering pump. The engine will slide right out using a bracket I made and the shops fork lift. I feel the E series engines come out easier than the F series. Taking my time engine removal is under 4 hrs.
  4. I did some 6.4 rocker arms and had the same low compression in one cylinder after the repair. I found the metal clip on top of the lifter came out causing the lifters push rod cup to roll. I got the cup back in place minus the clip but it didn't matter the engine blew up 500 miles later due to a front cover failure. Truck was a 08 F550 paramedic/rescue unit and I wasn't going to short block this one. I put a stick on the accelerator pedal out back of the shop until the engine locked up, got a new complete drop in for this one. 6.4 engines SUCK ASS.
  5. I have one in the bay right now that I took apart before going on vacation, a 2008 F550 rescue truck 93K 5372 hours, they said they were in no hurry for the truck so they give it to me to tear apart and then let it sit a week. Really makes you want to come back after a week off. Engine has lots of thick sludgy oil on the insides of the valve covers. They were changing the oil, it has had 17 oil changes in 93K and 5300+ hours, and they found a small metal clip stuck to the drain plug. It was the clip on the end of the rocker arm pivot. FSE and hot line says not caused by lack of maintenance but probably caused by running too hot and to check the thermostats and cooling system per the TSB, WTF??? My calculations say it should of had around 27 lofs. All rockers tips and balls, bridges, push rods worn. Replaced them all cleaned out the goo as best as I can. Start it up and have a skip on #7. here popping out intake and relative compression is down 15% on #7. Took the valve cover back off to see if I missed the push rod or bridge location, all is ok. If the idle is raised there is a loud rapping in the engine. Valve lift looks ok but I can't wiggle the #7 intake rocker like the rest when the valve is closed. Any one run in to issues like this on the POS engine? I am thinking stuck lifter due to sludge or valve recession. I fucking hate these 6.WHORE engines. Give me a E Series 6.0 any day of the week to work on. Got E 350 sitting outside with roller beings in the pan and no oil pressure. Another short block for this one. I have never seen this type of rocker arm wear on the 6.0s.
  6. I have seen several cam/lifter failures on the 6.0 over the years. It has been always on high idle time vehicles, airport shuttle buses and ambulances. The few that had hour meters in them were all over the 12000 to 15000 hour mark with around 120000 to 150000 miles. On the airport shuttle buses I do all the maintenance and always check the filter bypass valve and replace the filter stand pipe as necessary. I can see this failure coming for quite some time with small particles of metal on the drain plug magnet and then roller bearings from the lifters. Finally it gets towed in with no base oil pressure and the low pressure oil pump and front cover is all torn up. Yea I could of repaired them under the Ford Extended warranty but I would rather let the engine grenade so it can be repaired correctly with a short or long block and stick it up Fords ass with all the extra diagnosis. Cam and lifters are only lubed by splash so lots of idling will take them out. I also would rather work on these E series than a F series, once you know the short cuts and tricks there is lots of money to be made. Flame on
  7. Make sure you check all the fuses on this truck. I have been down this road before. Shop manual always seem to lead to the PCM and never mentions checking for power. The glow plug light will come on when commanded using IDS even when the fuse is bad.
  8. Have done several E series van FICMs. Most were high mileage airport or city transport vehicles.
  9. I have had a laptop computer in a cabinet with a docking station by the side of my tool box for several years now. I bought a VCM earlier this year as did 5 other guys in our shop. I don't know how the techs today would be able to do their jobs efficiently without their own computer's in there bays. The shop actually bought all 5 of the VCMs and did a payroll deduction for us until they are payed off. They also said they would update the software for us, FREE, when the time come around to do so.
  10. I had a good friend call me yesterday, he was at a party and the subject of 7.3 piston removal came up. One of the other guys at the party said that a local diesel shop said you can R+R the pistons from the bottom of the engine without removing the heads. I said I don't think so and if it could be done you would have to remove the crankshaft, both front and rear covers which is a lot more work than removing the heads. Anyone ever here of this MYTH. I say it is BUSTED. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/boink3.gif
  11. The 7.3s CMP now have a recall, 07S57. It's about time this happen. .2 to inspect and .3 to replace. Hope we can generate a few inspection sheet up sales with this FSA.
  12. It's about time this came out. The CMP sensors for the 7.3 dropped in price quite awhile ago which smelled like recall coming soon. .2 to inspect .3 to replace CMP. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hitthefan.gif
  13. Quote: I always ask myself a question when I am doing a repair: What would I do if it were mine? I do agree with this statement but for the case of the 6.0 it doesn't apply as I wouldn't own one of the POS. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/flamethrower.gif
