  1. ha. so you, too, have the privilege of working on Chironex. my dealership pushes them up here and they are a supreme piece of garbage. the handful that we have sold are repeatedly back in the stalls for service. our best chironex so far was one which intermittently blew its 4x4 fuse. after playing around with no diagrams it was traced back to the 4x module/motor itself, but reaching that diagnosis was not a good time.
  2. I should have snapped a picture of my bay before leaving on Friday. I put my 1952 Evinrude 15 Fastwin on the stand next to my hoist. Time for new coils, points, condensers and ignition wires. At the ripe ol' age of 26 this will be my first time changing points. Good luck with your inboard. Hope that you can find a way to get at the valve without much of a hassle, such as pulling the 4.6 on a Sport Track to drill out somebody else's easy-out that broke in the exhaust manifold stud.
  3. Glad to see you folks are enjoying the nice temps in Slave Lake. Be mindful of the sparks this year with the warm temps. And that hot stuff back in Ontario sounds like too much. I am in the same boat. 25 in Whitehorse the last couple days has me sweating bullets in my coveralls. Time to go dump a freighter canoe in the river with a 12 pack in tow : ) Happy Sunday y'all.
  4. good to hear. been at ford for a year now after moving over from subaru and this will be my first cab off. i've done 5.4s on 250s and 350s but did them in chassis. i'm a little nervous for the first one but i'd like to cut my chops on the retail job before i have to push for time on the ESP truck. any specific tips or is it pretty self-explanatory? we have two diesel guys at the shop and they always have a cab off, but i can count on one hand the amount of times i've seen them getting into a gas job. needless to say i've never seen a 1/2 ton without its body.
  5. two more today. first is an '04 F150 with 280 000, low on oil due to a leak on r/hand vct solenoid seal. it came in with a noticeable noise - loud enough that i almost thought it may be a lifter. replaced the blown fuse for the DLC and pulled codes. some of my favourite ones were in there KOEO - p0011 0012 0021 0022 cam/crank correlation, 0340 and 0345 cmp circuits, 0420 0430 catalyst performance. yeehaw ..... hooked up the old oil pressure gauge and watched it rapidly fall from 50 psi cold idle to an erratic 18 psi hot idle in 30 minutes. at 20 psi it started bucking all over the place. lovely. retail long block time + cats + cam sensor harness if he'll go for it. while i was running that one in my bay with the gauge hanging down another one pulled in the lot. this one an '08 bucking all over the place and can't get out of its own way. p0021 and 0022. going to run same oil pressure test first thing tomorrow and i expect much of the same. this one has extended coverage so should definitely be doing this one. i'm going to try them cab off. see how that goes.
  6. 2010 F150 for a hooped l/front hub and IWE due to a vacuum line failure and an ~800 km drive to Whitehorse from NWT. put it up on the hoist today and it'll be the first thing done on monday .... 2007 F550 diesel for a commerical inspection, dust seals, service .... 99 Chev Express 3500 cab & chassis bus for front rotors and pads .... and finally a 99 Subaru Impreza 2.2 flat 4. $50 bought this semi-abandoned unit that had been sitting behind the shop for the last year. originally i thought i needed it for parts (cat pipe) but that turned out to not be the case. with that in mind i decided to make this my winter beater - pulled the motor to do typical head gasket repair. motor is now back together and on the stand ready to put back in next saturday. then it needs a rear pinion seal, rear wheel bearings and an alternator. she'll be on the road (with brand new studded snows) for less than $700.
  7. Did one on a '10 F250 just before I left for school a couple months ago. Cold idle had oil pressure in spec, but once warm the bottom fell right out of it and my gauge rapidly bounced from 15-25 psi. Crank end play was good. Pulled the rocker cover and found scoring under the cam caps. Pulled the engine to explore further and found the mains done even worse than the cams. I have the sales guy's truck in my bay right now - 2005 F150. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are low on the power balance. No codes yet. VCT pids show a fair difference between the banks. I told him I'm going to throw a phaser and solenoid at it and use some heavy 10w30 or 15w40 in the summer months. What else can you do? Not too many people shell out longblock money on retail jobs.
  8. got it all together. no leaks, no fuss, no muss. tranny shifts like a dream, too. ready to hit the road back to the Klondike. wound up taking the plate off and pressing in the seal from the back. sleeve went on the crank. used a tim's coffee cup with the rim trimmed off as the 'special cone' to slide the rear cover with seal assy. over the crank. worked like a charm.
  9. much thanks boys. i will have a look at what the parts kit comes with and go from there. if it comes with an install tool then i'll leave the rear cover on, drill the old seal and remove with the slide hammer. if it is just a seal and sleeve then i'll pop the cover and use the press. 1.3 million kilometers on the old girl. with an overhauled tranny, clutch and rear main she should be good for a few more.
  10. Pulled the T19 in my 1986 6.9 the other day and installed new bearings and synchro rings. While the tranny and x-few case are out I decided to do the clutch and turn the flywheel. I pulled the flywheel to find the rear main sweating. Never have done a rear main on one of these - being born in 85 they are before my time. Truck is too old for PTS. I'm guessing I have to pull the rear engine cover. Is there a gasket for that or is it just done up with high temp silicon? Is there a wear sleeve like the front seals on 6.4s and an install tool? I really hope that it's just tap the new one into the cover and then slap it back over the crank ... I am down in Alberta finishing up 4th year & far from my dealership in the Yukon. I won't have any special tools if they're necessary.
