Keith Browning
On a 1997 F-350 7.3L DIT, what is the small black module about 1" square on the harness near the fuel filter housing? It has a 4-pin connector on it and the top is clear showing the circuit board inside. The only part numbers on it are international markings... Parts counterman was asking. I have never had to mess with this thing.

Bruce Amacker
WIF module, which is hooked to the WIF sensor and turns on the WIF light.

Keith Browning
Thank you Bruce. Now, why the hell is a module needed for the WIF? Does it act somewhat like a slosh module to prevent the light from flashing or flickering?
Bruce Amacker
IIRC, the module measures resistance of the WIF sensor (which is nothing more than an insulated pin that sits in the bottom of the fuel bowl) and when the resistance (measured to ground) moves into the appropriate window (I assume the resistance gets lower) it provides a ground path for the WIF light in the dashboard. If you simply hooked the ground side of the WIF light to the pin, water would probably not provide enough current flow to illuminate the WIF light. The module acts kind of like a relay- it senses the water and turns on the light. I would guess in later applications this small module moved inside the PCM. Aaron
Not to mention, water and electricity don't mix.
jimmy57
Sounds like a simple case of an acronym problem. The WTF module is actually a WIF module.
Damon
Not to mention, water and electricity don't mix. The low coolant probe on the older IH's had this issue too. The probe needed too much current to work, and the result was corrosion on the tip of the sensor. The TSI was to install a module to take the load off the sensor. It's really just a small solid state relay.
