06 no low pressure oil.

A friend of mine asked me to look at his truck.He said it just died.06 6.0.I looked at it yesterday.Cranking the engine the gauge doesnt move for oil pressure.I removed the oil filter and held the check valve down and cranked again.Its not filling the oil filter housing.I removed the oil pressure switch and put a gauge on there and i have 0 psi.Removed the regulator i found 2 tiny peices of metal that looked like part of a wire wheel but thats it.Oil looks clean.Is it safe to say i need to go after the LP pump.Also whats the best way to remove its been a while since i worked on a 6.0.I work for International now and its Maxxforce all day everday.

I had a 6.0 that ate the wire snap ring from an STC fitting. Pulled it out of the regulator but it still wouldn't build base. Pulled the gerotor out and it looked okay until you really looked close. It was like the teeth were wire-wheeled down. Put new gears in it and it fired right up.

 

Over a year later it came back with the STC blown all the way out. I had just assumed initially that it had been replaced and the ring was a leftover.

The high pressure pump was done 2 months ago.Im hoping they put an updated fitting on when they had it apart.Anyway best way to tear this apart???Tear the whole front apart or just pull the rad???

I pull the fan and stator as one, leave the rad in. If you take the rad mounts off the top and flip the positive battery cable up you can pull the rad forward and slide the fan shroud up and out. Watch the degas nipple on the rad, don't drag the shroud over it.

 

Once all that stuff is out the balancer bolts come out easily with an impact.

Assuming the high pressure oil pump was already replaced with one from Ford (or Navistar) it should already have the one-piece updated branch tube connector installed. Given the age of these trucks, I would be very hard pressed to believe there are any out there with the original STC fitting still installed.

Overall I agree, but this week I had a early '99 7.3 (the one with the bad style air cleaner and no PerDels) in class with 6,000 original miles and very low hours, just doesn't get driven. (fire service truck in WA).  Last year I had a VDOT 6.0 boom truck with about 12K miles IIRC. Both look like new.....

It's a moot point now. Probably a roller lifter, but whatever it was doesn't matter anymore. At least now, the repair has either two directions. Either long block it, get paid for the time you have into it for your diag and disassembly and let them take it out of your hair on the hook.

Well the guy is a good friend if mine and is looking for a quick fix to dump the truck.What are your thoughts on changing the lifters if the cam is not destroyed and I drop the pan and the bearings are ok? In my mind the engine is pretty much fucked but man do I feel bad he just dumped 5800.00 in this thing.

Changing the lifters is still a lot of work, along with all the parts needed (front cover plus all the gaskets etc.). I say the most cost effective way out of this mess is a half decent boneyard engine.

I agree. Plus more than likely if there is a junk lifter the cam is junk as well. The one or two I've seen have been.

Unfortunately cam and/or lifter issues on any 6.0/6.4 almost always results in an engine replacement. Just the labor alone to replace the cam makes it cost prohibitive.
