  1. At first I did upper oil pan reseals, but had a few come back leaking in the same spot (the t-joint at the upper oil pan, front cover, and block). Starting doing front covers and haven't had one come back. But I also do my front covers different. I hate working on stuff up above my head, so I would pull the cab and engine, put it on the stand and when it came to reseal the upper pan flip the engine over and let it sit overnight upside down. Throw it back in the morning and have it running by lunch. It takes us just as long to clean the block and upper oil pan properly as it does to remove and install. But I always see oil up above the upper oil pan, usually 2-3" above between the front cover and block.
  2. Still working normally at this time. Coworker and I have 6 front cover jobs to do ( some warranty, some CP) along with some other work. If we have parts for everything, we could work for 2 weeks with nothing else coming in. We've went from 4-5 a day dropped off to 1-2. Service manager is taking some precautions, porter is supposed to be wiping down vehicles down in the service lane. Parts told us our cutoff time for ordering went from 4 PM central time to 1pm. Our truck shop is separate from the main shop and service lane so I don't see customer's usually, and only deal with my service writer and parts. No confirmed cases within 30 miles of here as of now, but probably because not everyone is getting tested as needed. My biggest concern is taking this home to my daughters, oldest will be 5 next month and youngest will be a month old on Friday.
  3. I saw this in a news article about the lawsuit..." This is the first time we’re hearing from the Diesel Brothers after a four-year lawsuit against them has closed. A federal judge ordered the custom truck makers to pay more than $800,000 to the U.S. government and Davis County for polluting Utah’s air. Firing up the engine on his diesel truck, David “Heavy D” Sparks from the Diesel Brothers on the Discovery Channel, points out the tailpipe vibrating, but you don’t see anything come out. “That is the majority of what’s in question here with this lawsuit,” said Sparks. Sparks is talking about the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that prevents black pollutants from coming out of the tailpipe. After the first 20 or 30,000 miles of driving, Sparks said the DPF gets clogged and it’s a $5,000 to 10,000 dollar fix. “Whereas to bypass that, you’re [looking at] 500 to 1,000 bucks,” said Sparks. “The vehicle runs better and gets better mileage, creating more power—that’s why people are interested in taking those off.” " After reading this I realized he has no idea how the emissions on the diesels work and I guess he doesn't understand how DPF regeneration works either. And the truck doesn't magically run better just because you removed the DPF, its part of the tuner you installed that probably doesn't care about safe fuel rail pressure, injection timing, or boost pressure. It's sucks driving trucks that are deleted and tuned because they usually have horrible drivability characteristics.
  4. I had one of these trucks about a year ago. After conferring with hotline, we determined it was indeed the IRMC actuators causing the noise, and replacement of the manifold solved the noise. Haven't seen one making noise since and that truck has not returned.
  5. I'm not Joe, but I can verify this works on the 2017 and newer trucks with the trailer modules. I had my dealer purchase a couple last year and have used it several times. I will say before you attempt to diagnosis for no 12 volt supply to the trailer plug, read the WSM. From the WSM " Trailer Battery Charging The TRM provides voltage to the trailer tow connector for trailer battery charging when all the Following are true: the TRM detects that a trailer is connected the ignition is on and engine is running a brake pedal application has been detected in the present ignition cycle the BCM load shed strategy is not active (a message will be displayed in the instrument cluster, such as "Low Battery Features Temporarily Turned Off" or "Turn Power Off To Save Battery", to indicate that BCM load shed strategy is active) The TRM directly (no relay) supplies fuse protected voltage for trailer battery charging"
  6. I've found that I need to remove the degas bottle hose from the radiator to the bottle to get the system to drain all the way. Otherwise, it will only drain about 3/4 of a gallon. With the hose off, I'll get about 2 1/2 gallons. Then it doesn't make a real mess for me. I also remove the inner fender liner and that allows me to access everything pretty easily.
  7. I've done 3 in the last week and have it down to about 2 hours or so. I don't remove any coolant pipes, only loosen them and rotate the smaller tube reward. Unbolt the dipstick tube and pull it up slightly enough to help the cooler clear. Installing the front lower bolts are really the only thing that hold me up. Otherwise, I kinda enjoy the job. I also got the approval to drive one for about 3 weeks. They need 2000 miles put on them before May to be able to offer a $3000 discount. It will be nice to find out fuel mileage and the normal day to day drivability of this engine paired with the 10-speed.
  8. I have been slammed since the end of January. I currently have 16 tickets. A couple of front cover/upper oil pan leaks on 6.7 trucks. Some 6.0 trucks with main harness issues and another with oil leaking from the oil cooler. A 6.4 truck that sets P0087 when towing, found fuel system contaminated with gas and metal in fuel. Another 6.4 that makes oil every 200 hours, we sent off a oil sample but have not gotten the results yet. A warranty DPF on a 6.7, and another getting the collar kit for 17M04. 2 F-150's that the need the recalls done on the diesels. Another 6.7 that has a tank full of water. We received nearly 12" of rain last week, several gas stations had their tanks flooded. A F-450 with a V-10 that appears to have cracked or broken a flywheel a few thousand miles after another shop installed a trans. A brand new F-250(16 miles) with the 6.2 gas engine that has a hole in the fuel tank. Couple of state DOT trucks, one with no taillights and a tapping noise in the engine(6.2 gas) and another with a V-10 that's missing and making noise.
  9. I was diagnosing a P0170 on a 2015 F-350 the other day, which lead to pinpoint test MX. When I got to step MX13, it asks "Are all the fuel balance quantity PID values within 6.4 mg (0.1 gr) of each other?" . If I perform pinpoint test M step M7 it asks "Are all 8 fuel balance quantity PID values relatively in line with each other?". I asked hotline a couple years ago about step M7 and they responded that anything above 0.1gr would be considered out of line. Anytime I see injector balancing pid swing back and forth more than 0.2 grs either direction, I find metal in the LH fuel rail. Hotline had told me if no metal is on the VCV, then the high pressure pump is good and the metal came from machining of the fuel rail. But I've always been taught that on a common rail system no metal should be present. So who do I trust?
  10. I rarely see any failures on the Torqshift 6. I think over my 7 years with Ford, I've replaced 3 under customer pay. Warranty has consisted of Torque Converter seals leaking, multiple shift solenoids, and 1 time I replaced the output shaft bearings due to noise. Now the last trans I replaced was right before Christmas. Truck had over 350k miles, and over 11,000 engine hours. The bearing in the pump that supports the torque converter failed, and it was pumping fluid out from behind the starter. Based on the mileage and hours, it got a reman.
  11. Well I was gonna say the power points , but it appears the BCM controls the relays for the power points. The only thing I can find is the up fitter switches are not controlled through a module, but still receive their power through fuses in the BJB and BCM.
  12. Yup, my dealer just bought 2 of these. I like it, LED's are bright, plenty of cord to reach the inside of the truck. Much smaller and less bulky compared to the Tekonsha tester. The only thing I like about the Tekonsha tester over this one is the abilty to see both voltage and amperage from the brake controller, but so far the IPA tool has not failed me. It sells on the Rotunda site for just a little over $100.
  13. Yup, but I'm the only guy that does diesels and my truck shop is separate from the main shop. The main shop is similar to yours, but 4 techs, 3 oil changers, and 1 tech that does used cars. My shop is 4 bays, 1 flat stall, 12k 2-post, 15k 2-post, and a 30k drive all. All newer Rotary lifts. Boss said this morning they are looking to add about 3 bays, and I requested 2 15k or 18k Rotary lifts for those.
  14. Then I have a whole parking lot left to diagnosis. 2014 F-250 6.7- CEL is on, A/C not cooling well, Works package, balance tires, and fuel filters. 2016 F-350 6.2 gas- CEL, engine stalls. Flashers inop, trailer brakes inop, tire rotation and brake inspection. 2015 F-250 6.7- CEL, reduced engine power at times, will not start, works package, fuel filters. 2015 F-450 6.8 gas- Ticking noise from engine. 2011 F-350 6.7- CEL, customer states is has DTC for DEF sender under 18M01 2015 F-250 6.7- CEL, backup camera inop. 2018 Transit 3.2 Diesel with 19 miles- No start, CEL is on. And I think I have 2 coming in Monday for appointments, and we are booking other appointments out 2 weeks. Still just me doing diesels now that I've been back full time since spring. Told the boss the other day we need to add on to the shop, I know a kid that finished ASSET school working at another dealer that I want working here. But current building size will only support 1 tech right now.
  15. Well I feel like every truck in my county is here for me to work on. Currently waiting on parts or room in the shop for repairs: 2012 F-350 6.2 gas- SPW heater core- Flushing cooling system as well as this is the 2nd core it's eaten in less than 6 months 2008 F-350 6.4- EGR temp sensor in the RH up-pipe and EGT 11 sensor. Quoted the RH up-pipe just in case 2016 F-250 6.7- Getting a starter and EGR bypass actuator under warranty. 2011 F250 6.7- Cab mounts and coolant flush. 2012 F550 6.7- MAF sensor, air filter, and resealing the air box. Truck belongs to the local airport and is set up as a fire truck. The up fitter added a filter restriction gauge inside the cab, and ran a vacuum hose to the air box. But they cheaped out and tried sealing a plastic vacuum tee to the inside of the box, but failed. Dirt getting sucked through this hole contaminated the MAF. Went by Lowes last night and picked up some brass fittings to install in the box for a good seal and attach their vacuum hose. 2008 Explorer- Belongs to some of my wife's family, getting a ABS module and both front hub bearings. 2013 F-250 6.7- DEF Sending unit under ESP, front brakes and fuse for trailer connector retail pay. 2012 F-350 6.2 gas- Brake Master cylinder is bypassing internally, and all 4 brakes are smoked from overheating. Even the rubbers on the slide pins were melted off, and the paint on the backing plates were burnt off. So it's getting a complete brake system-MC,HCU, all calipers, hoses, rotors, slide pin kits, pads, seals, and front wheel bearings. Only thing left will the hard brake lines.
  16. So I had to work on one already. Brand new unit, noise from engine bay. Found the engine driven fan hitting the lower fan shroud. The lower shroud has an "extension" the uses plastic rivets and clips to hold this extension onto the shroud. Appears it wasn't installed correctly, came loose and hit the fan breaking it into 2 pieces. You can see the sticker on the new 'extension' in the pic with the fan blades installed. As far as repairs, the front of the motor looks easy to get to. Shrouds come off easy, the fan comes off the front of the clutch like a 6.7 does. Like Keith, I'm not a big fan of putting the HPFP in the rear that runs off another belt. Time will tell how other repairs will go. Driving it impresses me. While not as quick as the 5.0 or the EcoBoost motors, I think most customers will be satisfied. I think towing capacity is just below the 3.5 EcoBoost, so that should be sufficient. Anyone towing more should be in a F-250 IMO. Not that the engine cant pull the weight, but I feel the larger truck would do a better job handling the weight of the trailer. A very short drive(13 miles) found it averaging in the mid 20's for MPG, and I noted that this engine will build close to 30 psi easily. We have 2 already and a 3rd coming in August or September, it will be interesting to see how they sell and perform.
  17. Just did one yesterday myself. Luckily, not much rust down here. Removed the air box, both inner fender liners, and steering stabilizer. Otherwise, it's just pulling it all out and putting back in. And like yours, the new one was very stiff which was a pita at times. The hardest part for me was getting the plastic housing back between the water pump and p/s line and fed back up to the driver's side battery. It was under warranty and I ended up clocking around 2.3 hours for it.
  18. Just an FYI, the 3.0 Coffee Table Book is now available under the service tips tab for a 2018 F-150.
  19. Well after 3 months I'm finally back to work 5 days a week. Been doing part time for the last 6 weeks or so. I'm actually walking all on my own now, no assistance from crutches or a cane. I go back to the doctor in 2 weeks for another checkup. My last checkup a month ago he said I wasn't 100% healed in the bone yet, but I could continue to put weight on it and work light duty. Most of the pain is gone, unless I do something stupid like try to twist my leg or use it to push something heavy(like a bucket full of coolant). I'm trying to keep what I do pick up under about 30 pounds( that's what my daughter weighs). Still bragging on my employer. They continued to pay our health insurance for 90 days and worked out an hourly average so that working 20 hours a week got me around $500 a check. My biggest issue now is finding a pair of comfortable shoes. I bought some Sketcher work shoes that resemble a tennis shoe, as I wanted something light. They are slip resistant and have a gel insole, but at the end of the day my feet are still killing me. So if y'all have any suggestions for good work shoes on concrete, I'm gladly take them. The only thing is I'm looking to stick with ankle height( my leg and ankle still have some swelling at the end of the day), as light as possible, but most importantly comfortable.
  20. Well I had a good doctor visit yesterday. X-rays show that I healing up well, and the doctor said I could start putting weight on it. Once I'm comfortable with that I can start walking. I went to class in Atlanta about 2 weeks ago for the Advanced Driveability class, and the instructor there introduced me to a knee crutch. That thing has been a life saver. http://iwalk-free.com/ is the one I bought. My doctor has even offered to buy it from me when I'm done with it. I'm kinda back at work now. They have a younger tech that has some diesel experience working in the truck shop, so I'm gonna start coming in 3 days a week to help with mainly with diagnosis and if he gets stuck on a repair. It will probably be another month to 6 weeks before I'm back full time and hopefully back to a normal pace. My work has been great, still paying my insurance and they pay me about $400 every week, even though I'm not here. It's hard to find a good dealer with good managers, but I think I found one. They keep telling me they just wanna help me though this time and want me to come back healthy and spend the rest of my career here. I can't think of any other job that I've had prior that would have done this. Anyways, here my x-ray pics for yall to enjoy. I actually broke the smaller bone in 2 places, that's why there is such a long plate holding it. And the rod is inside the main leg bone from my understanding. I'm not sure when it will come out, if it will. I go back to the doctor in another 4 weeks and I'll know more then.
  21. Thanks for the replies. Today marks 2 weeks since the incident. Seems like the longest 2 weeks of my life. I saw the doctor last Thursday( 1-25). They took x-rays and doctor said everything looked good. They went ahead and took all my staples out. I had 3 small incisions on the left side of my right ankle and knee, a slightly larger one on top of my knee(where they inserted the rod) and 1 long one of the right side of my ankle, going about 7 inches up my leg( where they inserted the plate and pins). Those are healing well. I have a physical therapy nurse come to my house every other day during the week, and they have exercises for me to complete. And yes it was a compound tib/fib break. After my last visit, the doc said I can start to apply some weight to my leg, but not anything over 50lbs. I use it from time to time to help balance myself if standing up(say brushing my teeth, or washing my hands). I have a shower bench that allows me to take normal showers. As far as things to do, I have a Amazon Fire Stick which I have downloaded an app called Terrarium TV. It gives me unlimited movies and tv shows. Also my father has always had a lot of books on WWII, so he has brought me several books to read. As far as online training, I have everything complete. I was scheduled to go next week to Advanced Engine Performance class, and my doctor has approved me going so that will be nice. But I don't get out much right now. My right ankle is still swollen and has some fluid in it, so I try to keep it elevated as much as possible. As far as work, they have been great. They told me that they would continue to cover my health insurance for me while I was out of work( I have family coverage), and then last Friday I noticed a deposit in my checking account( we have direct deposit). When I asked my manager, he just stated it was a little something to help out. Now it wasn't a full paycheck, but between 1/3 and 1/2 of what I would have normally brought home during an average week. At this point, being there just a little over 7 weeks I was totally surprised. In the short amount of time, they have been great to me, already paying me holiday days, buying any tools that were needed, etc. To do this has just gave me peace of mind that I have found a great dealer to work for. And my church has been great. This past Sunday they gave me a check that will cover at least 1 month, maybe nearly 2 months worth of bills. I know some of yall have asked. I do not have any type of go fund me account, but if you do wish to donate then I would suggest doing it through my church. https://gracefellowshipfamily.com/ is the website, and you should see a giving link that you can click and it will open a page to give online. You can just put what it's for in additional comments. Now I didn't post this to ask for donations, but I know many people are the giving type. So if you so wish to do so, just know that I am thankful and hopefully I can repay you sometime.
  22. So in Alabama, we don't see snow or ice very often. Usually once a year we get flurries, but only every 3-4 years do we get enough to make an impact. So on last Tuesday(the 16th), we got around an inch. The main issue was that the temps the day before was in the 50's, but we had an arctic front moving in. So any snow on the roads would melt, but the frigid temps caused it to refreeze and form a layer of ice. So at 10 that morning, our boss sent us home. No problem for me, I got an older 4x4 with mechanical lockers and good tires. On my way home, I came upon a stranded truck on a small hill. I stopped to offer assistance and disaster struck. I lost my footing on the ice and fell. I heard the snap, and once I had landed and tried to get up my worst fear had came true; my right leg was broken. I had made through 32 years and never had a major injury, but this time I wasn't so lucky. 911 was called, the local VFD showed up and kept me warm till the ambulance showed up. Once at the ER, X-Ray verified both bones had compound fractures and required surgery. They went ahead and did it that evening. Spent a few days recovering and came home on Friday. I go tomorrow for my first checkup, but after surgery doc said 6-8 weeks no weight bearing, 3 months no work. I had just started this job a few months the ago, and had neglected to get myself disability insurance(lesson learned). Luckily, my family and local church are raising funds to help with bills. I did have health insurance through work, so I should be mostly ok there. And my work has stated that they will continue to pay for the insurance while I'm off work. Just never know how quick things can change. My biggest problem now is being stuck at home. My wife is a stay at home mom for our 3 year old, and I've always been the provider. It sucks knowing that I'm gonna be sitting here at home, not being able to provide for my family. But luckily family and church is helping there. Hopefully still being young and fairly heathly, I can heal up soon and get back to what I love to do. Any advice y'all can give to help me to pass to time? Books, movies, etc?
  23. https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2018/01/08/diesel-finally-arrives-in-ford-f-150-with-30-mpg-and-11400-pound-towing-spring-2018/#4dc340192403. This article has a little cut-away pic of the diesel, I noticed it appears to be using a timing belt. EGR cooler on top, and I think it's a single turbo? And while watching a video on the 2019 Chevy truck release, I overheard the guy say that GM was gonna offer an in-line 6 3.0 diesel in their half-ton trucks.
  24. My diesel work at the new shop is overflowing. I'm a one man truck shop, so doesn't take long to get backed up. 2016 F-550. Brakes front and rear retail, turbo under warranty for P0234. 2008 F-250 Exhaust leak. Customer had some aftermarket up-pipes installed, someone crossthreaded one of the bolts into the turbo. Just finished drilling the bolt and retapping the threads. I kept breaking the bolt off everytime I welded a nut to it. Also getting a hublock vacuum solenoid. 2007 F-250. Getting a water pump and fan clutch. 2013 F-250. DEF tank heater, radiator, the coolant hose that runs from the oil cooler to the lower radiator hose, and rear brakes. 2012 F-350. Hydro Brake Booster, Program Remote Start and Keys, and the coolant hose from oil cooler to lower radiator hose. That's the jobs approved that I'm currently working on. The list to be checked. 2013 F-250 Exhaust system Fluid Fault light on. 2012 F-250 P0087 keeps resetting. Going to pull the PCV and check for metal. 2000 F-350 Customer states driver's side rear wheel moving in and out while driving. 2005 F-450 Customer states engine miss, goes away while driving. 2001 F-450 One of our used trucks, wont start with temps under 60 degrees. Glow Plug relay is working, think I got some glow plugs or harnesses bad. Also injectors are sticking horribly cold, it's probably gonna get quoted injectors, glow plugs, harnesses, and valve cover gaskets.
  25. I had ran into one a few months ago that wouldn't take DEF like it was full, but the DEF level showed empty. After reading in the PC/ED manual, I decided to pull the tank to physically check the fluid level before I ordered a tank. That's when I found the fill hose had been wrapped around the vent housing at the factory, and with the tank and bed installed it pinched off the fill hose. I got that fixed and it took DEF normally. Other than that, I haven't seen any issues with DEF on the 17 and newer models.
