This one was a first for me. The truck had two crush washer failures (that I found so far),, and it was burnt so freakin bad that it wouldn't come out of the bore. I first thought that a rocker was binding on it,, but not so much. I shot some videos. I'm sure you guys have prob seen this before,, I haven't tho. Lol.

Fuse 74 "open" revisited
run6.0run replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Can you guys fill me in on where the wire cover needs to be?? Does the new harness have it completely fixed? Any pointers to watch for on the routing? Obviously this is my first hpfp issue. I have one now with a 0003 n a 0091 and pops #74. The kicker is this was a 6007 full dress that just exited warranty. I figured an engine they was assembled in 2012,, should've been safe from this. Guess not -
New OEM injector takes an engine
run6.0run replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I'm definitely gonna be paying much more attention to getting the air purged out in the future. Not much I can do besides that but to keep telling customers to drain their freakin separators. Some want a diesel,,, but want to treat it like a gasser. The customer that owns the truck in question,, has 4 trucks. I can't remember the last time they got out of the shop for less than $600. Those poor trucks come in for an oil change,, and after I fix all the broken stuff,, the bill is up there. Keeps our bills paid I guess. My wife Julie has made more phone calls to this customer breaking bad news. It's becoming regular practice. Lol -
New OEM injector takes an engine

I also let all injectors sit submerged in oil for as long as possible before installing. This was no way getting ran long enough to check pressure,,,, let alone a wot run. I only do the rear plugs,, which I actually replace because the seal isn't available without the plug,, when the cab is up. Not many E's gracing our doorstep. I do understand the causes for cracked tips,, I've got two pistons on my shelf from them,,, one was unleaded,, the other was aftermarket and possible water contamination. Fairly severe carnage. But,,, is it COMPLETELY out of the question that an OEM injector was just doomed to fail?? I've installed my fair share of em (8 today) and haven't experimented or changed any procedure in a very long time. And this is the first time that I've held the culprit,,, before it actually WAS the culprit. I've been pushing Ford injectors ONLY. I tell customers I will not install anything other than Ford. I just can't understand what the deal is/was with this particular injector. I did get word the parts are covered. Overhaul kit n injector,,, but that isn't enough. We have two dealerships we but from. And the two are major competitors with each other. I told blue springs (the warranty dealer) that the midway ( the other dealer) rep has been here four times since this issue started,, He said parts are covered,, but no labor. We have spent about 65k with them this year ( we did take about 45 days off as we moved,, bought a bigger shop) and I told him he will never run my card again if I get screwed. He don't care,,, But then again. Midway has 10 times the inventory. I'm venting now. Lol. I actually shot a video,, I gotta upload it n I will post it. -
New OEM injector takes an engine

I took a sample when it got here n let it sit,, then put it in the freezer. I will shoot a video of the situation. I expected to see a bunch of water,, but not so much. Actually barely a couple bubbles of water in the bottom of the glass. I'm wondering if the customer put unleaded at one time and pumped it out and is keeping that silent. BUT,,, why would the new injector be the one broken?? Unless the dry start did it. But I didn't do anything different than I normally do. I will get a video. -

New OEM injector takes an engine
run6.0run replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yeah I hear that,,, I run the fuel pump off n on for about 5 mins on n 5 mins off cracking the fuel cap when it's off. I do that about 3-4 times. I also do let it idle like you said. Sometimes customers are right there watching the power balance after repairs and most always are concerned about it being low. I tell them exactly what you said. "We gotta let the air pass as gracefully as possible". Lol. -
Hey guys,, I've got one that has me close to your world. I'm not in a dealership,, I own an independent shop,, we have a couple dealerships competing for our parts sales,, which is cool. But on to the issue,, we built an engine using the Ford overhaul kit about 6 months ago. The driver, drives the crap outta this poor truck. He melted the oil control ring which is why the rebuild. The coating on the studs were actually melted off. Julie took a video of the studs and sent it to ARP,, they sent a call tag to get them back n sent us replacements. They said they've never seen this before. Crazy!! Well,, 2 weeks ago we put a #4 injector in it. Customer declined a new set during the rebuild. The truck showed up on the hook 2 days ago. I was very concerned as I pulled it in. Then I pulled the glow plug first. Melted!!!! Tossed it on the shelf n told Julie "it's done". Half way pissed. Julie convinced me to pull the injector so we can know if the tip still exists. Well,,, the tip is cracked. We are supposed to have some rep come by to inspect for the warranty. Wonder how they're gonna treat this?? I was actually thanking God it wasn't a thrown rod,, spun bearing, ect. Lol. Those would be directly on us. This truck gets the crap beat outta it. In hindsight,, I wish I never took this customer on. So I took a fuel sample,, put it in the fridge,, no separation. So in my mind,,, 4 different scenarios,,, either too much water in the fuel,,, he customer ran unleaded at one time in the last two weeks,, low fuel pressure,, or crappy injector. I cannot check fuel pressure,, unless I throw a new/or at least un cracked injector in it. Do you guys think the ford inspector will want a WOT fuel pressure reading?? I've got a couple used injectors I could throw in for a road test. I haven't taken a compression test,,, once I saw the glow plug,, I stopped. Thank goodness we just got moved into our bigger shop and I've got room to sit on it. I have held off on the videos of it until Ford decides if they are gonna cover the consequential damage. I'm gonna snap some pics today of it. You guys desk with the ford inspector guys prob all the time huh??? Any advice??? Lol.

Got another aftermarket failure
run6.0run replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The injectors came from DCP. Some eBay seller I guess. I have a thread on a public forum and if they don't come with around $12k,, I'm gonna call them out. Of course they will prob want fuel samples and blame it on that. Freakin aftermarket crap,,, I can't complain,,, cause its payin my bills I guess. Lol -
This poor guy,, he bought this truck from a non ford dealer that said they replaced 4 injectors. They also loctited the fan clutch, put sealant on the valve covers, installed an egr delete, put a coolant filter on, ect ect. Well, now he's got a cracked Inj tip. 0 psi #8 cyl,,,, yeah,,, ZERO. With n without oil. I replaced #4 Inj a couple weeks ago. I had to go pull the invoice and it was typed on there that there are at least 4 more Inj in need of replacement. I actually gave him the Ids printouts. #8 was one of the recommended injectors. I remember him saying before he spends all that,, he'd sell the truck. So it came in on the hook and I bet he wishes he'd had sold it.

Quick job got out of control
run6.0run replied to run6.0run's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yeah,, I would've liked to put a harness on it,, but it wasn't gonna fly with him. Lol. Here is a video I took of that job -
Here is a video I took showing some leaking nipple cups. But it shows how I air test. That's the first time I've done the nipple cup oring replacement. I really rather leave them alone unless they sound like this.

So there's a chance the vref short was/could've been the source of the icp codes in koer? Hmmm,,, well crap!!! I did remove the harness and fold it forward to remove the intake for the oil cooler. You've got me thinking now. Was the short present before the repair??? Or did I cause it??? Did I change the hpp because of a freakin wire??? The customer stated he has never had a no crank issue before. -
Hello guys,, I am wondering what everyone else would've done in this position. I had a 2003 550 6.0 2wd come in. The customer was 80 years young. He wanted a serp belt,, coolant flush, and a cold start issue looked at. He thought his block heater was not working. Ok,, good deal. I pulled the pass wheel well to expose and inspect the block heater and cord. It ohm'ed out good also. So it was the end of the day,, I plugged it in and went home. Came back and the ect was 135,, eot was somewhere around 120. So I felt the block heater was a non issue. I then ran koeo. Got the GPCM code,,, (I really should have those numbers memorized, I bet all of you guys don't need descriptions huh). I then ran tests Af16-19,,, I think those were it. (Going off memory). Hooked up the jumper and condemned the GPCM. Ok good,,, Fired it up for the first flush n test drive w/vc9. 50* difference!!! Ok,,, oil cooler. I ran koer and the truck ran HORRIBLE during it. I got ICP intermediate and ICP low. It's an 03 btw. There was also a bunch of racket from the front end. After inspection both uppers and one lower BJ was bad. The steering linkage was fairly tight but there was knocking at the pitman to gearbox connection. So I called the customer. He was a little freaked out. He brought it in for a seemingly little inspection and repair and now it's definately not that. I got approval for the oil cooler,, check the egr cooler off the truck, and he surprised me when he approved the hpop. I told him his is GOOD, but with the failure rate if the 03 hpops and the koer test results,, it is a perfect time to replace it. Labor was $65 I think at that time. But if it goes out later,, it's about $650 labor. The next day I talked to the customer again and he was concerned about how high this repair is going,, compared to the little job it came in for. Oh,, the truck had gold coolant in it,, but the customer said he has been losing coolant,, and has been topping it off with whatever coolant he got from the auto parts store. The degas was completely full btw. I also was noticing a stumble at idle,, power balance #2 inj. Holy crap when will this truck quit showing me things wrong. The customer kept approving repairs,, and complaining about the repairs. He approved the sway bar end links,, and the gearbox and pitman arm (end links were dry rotted), this truck only has 89k mi on it. After exposing the hpp reservoir screen,, it was broken,, and with the extent of repairs,, I also put in an ipr and icp. This customer is 80 and I could tell that it wasn't about the money,, and he would have zero tolerance if after all this the ipr craps out. I also tested the icp circuit btw before any hpop discussion. I ohm tested it while shaking the harness around. It was good. At this point I'm ready to quit digging in his wallet,, I did the ball joints,, they were shot,, but I left all the other steering and suspension as is and noted that it would need reinspected at a later time due to the customers concerns about the extent and the cost of this repair he has now. Again ,, not just about the $$$$,, I think it was more about him being blindsided with all this news. Oh,, making it worse,, got it all done,, fired it up,, ran 5 mins n died. No PCM, no Ficm, no fp. Wtf now!!! PCM short,,,, vref short??? So I unplugged the fan, no dice, then ebp!!!!! Bingo!! Exposed the pigtail and found it got hot and started to melt the wires about an inch from the harness. Ok,, I repaired the wires,, actually taped them up because none were burnt black. Plugged it back in,, fired it and same thing. So then I left it unplugged and all is well. Correct me if I'm wrong guys ,, isn't the 03 using inferred ebp?? Iirc ids was showing input for it without it even plugged in. I told the customer that we could put a hundred dollar harness holder (new ebp) in it,, or just run it as is. plus with all his complaining,, and his skepticism about needing all these repairs,, I told him,, if there's anyone that doubts the short,, go ahead and have them plug in the ebp. I know it's not the protocol at all,, but the truck ran perfect. Should I call him back in and replace the ebp?? I guess my main question is,,, does the 03 run inferred ebp?? I have the calibration in the log. Thx for listening guys.

Hey guys,, my machine shop is a pretty close friend so I've got some videos of it. Those all were fairly low mileage engines,, the valves were all tight. He charges me 700 for a total valve job. Hard to justify on engines with under 150k. I have been seeing 5 as the number that most get cut. All of them are on the road now. He did a block and heads on a different truck. 6 on the heads n 3 on the block. Holy crap I was worried. I spun it by hand in a silent shop before installing. Lol. .009 worked for that engine without recessing. I was going by the 8 number,, but hard to trash the heads for .001. That's an expensive thou huh. Lol in multiple ways.

How about this one for a turbo for a customer in a hurry?? Lol -
Hello guys,, I'm new on here but hopefully I can learn some stuff from you guys,, and maybe just fit in here. I've got a friend that is a machinist and he made me a bunch of stuff. I posted about the degas adapter. Then I saw this thread. He made me a bunch of these in case anyone else wanted them He also sourced the viton,, or vitron 90 orings He also came up with this funky design His idea is the nipple cups fail first, then beat the top inj oring up. These are supposed to dissipate the hpo if there is a nipple cup failure. Thus, in theory, saving the inj oring. What do you guys think?

Hello guys,, I'm a newbie on here. I just got a new setup for degas pressure I thought I'd share with you all. Hopefully photo bucket works on here I have a good friend that is a machinist and he whipped this up. I like the quickness of it to install. It also double serves as a cap tester. I use a regulator with shop air to leak test with this also. Hopefully I can fit in with you guys here. This is a great resource that I'm very happy I found. I hope the links work on here. Do YouTube links work here also??
