WOW!!!!!!

Usually... October is busy schmoozing us into winter. We don't normally get snow until Hallowe'en but it came two weeks early this year... and is just about all melted. Now... come January, we usually have a week straight (at least) of about -40... sunset is around 3:45 or so....

The TSB was released for Canada early this afternoon and I performed my first recal soon after.... The noise is fairly evident from inide the cab and very noticeable with the hood open.... If your IDS is at 45.9 (updated one of ours before the reflash), you can do it already. Important to note, though.... when you go into module reprogramming, select FICM..... selecting PCM will tell you that there is no later calibration available. And I had a lucky guess (I like to think of it as an epiphany) since hotline would have already been closed. This truck was flagging four cylinders on the power balance this AM and we expect it to dip below freezing zgzin tonight.... Truck is staying here so I"ll be able to give some early impressions....

True to form, we will have to wait a while to see this TSB.... We're often up to a week behind on getting this stuff. We couldn't even get Powerstroke Central for the first while since it isn't available in French... Makes me wonder if the delay for us getting it is while they are waiting to get it translated....

2008 Super Duty/6.4L Overview
Jim Warman replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Them's big words, Joey..... we might wind up wishing for the return of the HEUI injector.... The more things I see and the moe things I learn only lead me to believe I will never see or know even half of everything.... -
A new flash due mid November that promises to stop us from having to replace injectors.... Anyone heard any rumours???
-
I just use a long screwdriver to pop the plastic guide tube off and then pop the "key" out of the winch.... After that, the jack handle fits with no adapters...

The only foot injury I ever sustain at work is when I stick one in my mouth /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Even if the plugs have been given SPW, I would think that this would show up somewhere in vehicle history... if not in OASIS, it should be in local records.... Disclaimer... we recently switched to some different RO software.... and I hate it, absolutely hate it. Still, we can use a VIN or customer name to see what's been going on... The old ROs had indication of outstanding FSAs... that was good since I can't seem to get many guys to run a friggin' OASIS when they know they should... Good luck...

I kinda like Cetanes thought track.... The quiet idle would have me pulling the EGR and looking for signs of wet stacking... Soot is going to be normal.... gooey sh*t is "normal" but not right. You could look at MF_DES and LOAD.... I still haven't correlated much more than high MF_DES plus high LOAD = bad injector(s) but these PIDs might be useful for other concerns I have yet to see. Failing that, we haven't discussed engine oil.... Maybe a buzz test while listening closely to what is heard and forgetting about the electrical portion of the test???? I am still sure that "stiction" isn't a real word, but it is a real condition. FWIW, we run 10W30 in the summer, 0W30 in the winter and spec our oil changes as "severe duty".

Eric, is there any chance that he can produce documentation to show that this has been an ongoing concern? I'm not sure how AWA works with extended warranty but I do believe that part of our job is to advise our customers as best we can.

pto idle kicker
Jim Warman replied to Gerry L. Lincecum's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Truck body builders also has some other good QVMs.... the one for the upfitter switches is real handy and concise if you haven't had to work with them yet... -
Stephen... you must be one old sumbatch.... I have no idea what a Matchbox toy might be.... I suppose you will try to tell me it is a small diecast metal toy from England that came in a cardboard box resembling a matchbox..... But I wouldn't really know since I never owned hundreds of them.... Next, you'll be telling us that there similar toys called "Dinky Toys".... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Fordstar material questions
Jim Warman replied to Cetane's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Me???? I'm trying to decide between pills, a gun or a sturdy rope..... We can fix that???? -
No dye in the chamber because a radiator pressure test (I don't use this for suspected combustion leaks) can only give about 16 or so PSI... Leaking the cylinder delivers shop air to the chamber (150PSI in our store)... the extra pressure can make all the difference in the world...

03 should be new enough for HVBoM to help out, too... -
IDS - VERY Disappointing!
Jim Warman replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Well, it happened again.... updated my IDSs to B45 and one of them pooched out... The other one this time. Same as last time... had to reload IDS software and we are good to go.... -
Ahhhh, Monday.... It's Thanksgiving in Canader... Monday is a paid holiday.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

I'm thinking ignition secondary.... a fresh plug is going to fire pretty easy.... round off the corners and load it up a little and required voltage is going to go up.... Look for lightning strikes along the plug wire (wouldn't hurt to inspect the running mate, too) or carbon tracks inside the boot.... also on the coil tower and inside the coil boot as well. I have a Radio Shack 30X magnifier that I use on the toy cars that can reveal any manner of concerns (sometimes, simply putting on my reading glasses does that, though).

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that there is the chance that nobody has actually experienced the miss???? The 4.0 had a lot of intake sealing concens when cold.. this would usually set mixture codes but I suppose anything is possible.... including cylinder codes.... You can verify this by getting the motor as cold as possible and using the smoke tester on it

Is this a 4 cyl or a V6?

The ABSOLUTE definition of irony!
Jim Warman replied to snw blue by you's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Post that over on TDS.... they can use that as "proof" that Ford will be running Cat power.... -
I kinda like it..... I think I'll keep it for now....

The wait to start lamp is controlled by the PCM independently of the GPR... If the lamp is staying on, you have a concern with the cluster, wiring or PCM. I've found one truck with an open between the PCM and the bulkhead connector...
