Broken CAC Tubes
Matt Saunoras replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
If you guys haven't noticed this part is still a direct ship from the manufacturer which means they must have a BUNCH of these things laying around(the box is even tagged "scorpion" which I rarely hear used anymore). They're not available in any warehouses and it typically took us 3 days to get one. Unacceptable after I had changed 4-5 so I confronted my service manager and we charged one to shop so I could have one "in-stock" to rotate out when we had to get a customer back on the road. This was one of the things that pushed me over the edge with our parts dept. No local dealers have one in stock so we must not need one either. Bull. Since then we have had a few changes with the way parts are stocked. -
Dealing With Broken Manifold Studs
Matt Saunoras replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Has anyone ever had a problems with heli-coil inserts? I have used them in the past for less critical threads but was considering getting a time cert kit incase the situation ever arises where I needed to repair a head. -
Dealerships should count their blessings

I guess I just haven't been around long enough. It just seems to be an ongoing trend of me not getting along with anyone at this place. 3 weeks of having the GM as the service manager has taken it's toll. -

Add dually wheels and super duty rotors to that list too -
Without a doubt. You price out a unison ring lately? That makes me sick. Even at wholesale price parts is making a killing. edit - way to get me started on a rant. I need to learn to play nice. I make parts a bunch of money, but everyone at our shop knows that.

Don't worry Keith. I anti-seize stuff too -
Dealing With Broken Manifold Studs

If I have one stud I need to extract for someone it takes longer to get setup than it does to actually remove it. What really wound up being a time saver was this set of bluepoint turbo socketshttp://store.snapon.com/Twist-Impact-inches-mm-Set-Socket-Impact-Twist-Fractional-Metric-1-4-drive-22-pcs--P644174.aspx Rather than have one 1/4" or one 5/16" bolt extractor I now have a multitude of choices. Build the stud out and chose the socket that fits best. -
International 1850712C91 is not an identical match to the OEM pigtail but it will work just fine and is plenty cheap. If you've ever noticed an 03 ICP connector it is more similar to that.

I just have a weird feeling about this guy. He's going to want to do shit his own way and that's not going to fly. He didn't seem to understand that I do all the trucks and I have 6-8 fleet companies that I do all the work for. I'm not always slammed busy but my plate is full. It only takes one day to get 2 weeks behind. -

We got a new service manager yesterday. I am not impressed. -
Broken CAC Tubes
Matt Saunoras replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have only seen this on heavy trucks that tow a lot, most of my 550 customers have been thru several of these tubes. I think inferior design plays a part along with sustained high boost levels. -
What do you guys think about this IPR?

These ambulances blow me away. They always have the most interesting failures. At least to me that is. They get run hard that's for sure. -

Wow, was there any sign of the pump leaking? -

Found the source of the brownish green material on the IPR. Started disassembling the pump and there's a hex plug on the bottom. This was the one in this pump. -

The shape of this thing has not ceased to amaze me, everything I look at is either wrong or broken in some way. I managed to figure out another trick removing the right valvecover with the intake out. Nice how it kind of just rolls right over the rocker box, no mount removal necessary. Also found this gem. Water pump looking a little crusty so I yanked it out. Not only is it boring its way into the front cover it also is almost cavitated all the way out -
Yup I did it too on a body off expedition shortblock.

Also I'm going to fix these too. I snip good hardshells off core injectors just for this reason. I have fixed more than a few like this over the years. -

Soft like pieces of gasket. I'm not sure what all is internal to the high pressure pump but I did not find anything that looked like that in the oil cooler reservoir or amongst any of the oil cooler gaskets. What I did find was a cracked high pressure oil pump body, debris in the oil reservoir plus a torn screen, also the oil cooler bypass valve is badly worn out and sitting crooked in the bore, notice the bottom of the valve in the third pic. This thing does have a new style oil cooler element so it has had one in the past. I am going to reseal it and clean everything out real well I just need to find a bypass valve. There's a used 6.0 on the lot that's going to the auction. I want to see if the GM will let me pull the old switcheroo. I am going to tear the pump apart just to see what's inside too. -
Any word on this valve? I've got one here that's all worn out too

I took it off and all that stuff was underneath it (same stuff as on the screen) The o-ring did not appear deteriorated but I should have looked at it closer. There's no doubt whatever is on the screen was also passing through the screen, metal included. What I found under the screen easily could have stuck the IPR open. The job isn't okay'd yet. I don't know what they're gonna do with this thing. I wish they'd junk this one and do the headgaskets on the other -

It doesn't feel gritty like dirt I've seen from the oil cooler reservoir in the past. It's too consistent and it honestly reminds me of gasket material but I'm not sure where it came from. Whatever it is probably is in the reservoir though. This ambo hasn't had any recent repairs, none whatsoever. If it ever had an oil cooler it would have been at least 3 years ago according to their shop guy. I quoted them a pump, IPR, oil cooler reseal and I want to check the low pressure gerotor. Also I got the EOT up to 190 on the road test and my IPR% was still fine. Fired right up after I shut it off. I am also going to clean the cam sensor mounting area on the block too if they okay it -

This one just shut off. Once it was back at the shop they messed around, checking filters and stuff like that, still wouldn't start so they towed it here. Of course it fires right up for me -

It hasn't had any work in the last 2 years and before that the history is unknown. I hate these unverifiable 6.0 no starts. This thing has so many miles (over 300k) it could be anything -
I've never been able to figure out why a dealership can't afford to pay an honest guarantee. Then again I can't figure out a lot of shit about how dealerships work I remember back when I was starting out in the shop I am in (5 years ago) we were looking for a seasoned tech to handle all the big stuff. We had an interviewee from North Carolina that was looking to move up here and needed a job. The reason he didn't get hired was he wanted a 40hr guarantee. If you saw our old shop you'd know why he wanted it. A lot has changed since then, new building and techs still aren't beating the door down. We were suppose to have a new hire Monday but that guy just backed out too.
