  1. Have this truck in for black smoke on aggressive takeoff, poor performance, p0299. I drive it and notice no wastegate operation. Called turbochargers on it. Ordered the two turbos, gaskets and hardware. 

     

    New turbos arrive. Right side bolts in great. Left side is missing the casting on the compressor which acts as the lower mounting hole. I ordered another turbo - same thing arrives.

     

    Is there a change up on these that I'm not aware of? Is my parts department ordering it incorrectly? I can't see Ford doing away with this mounting provision, let alone only doing it on one side.

     

    I'm going to the shop now - pictures to follow afterward.

  2. You can still get lots of Windows 7 stuff. Just not at your local Best Buy or Office Max.

     

    I have neither a local Best Buy nor Office Max. Any suggestions on where to head? I'm open to brick and mortar stores in Canada or ordering online from Canada or the US.

    Been seeing a ton of these with a leak at the lower block to block junction. I have, to date, not found any repair info on what is involved with dropping the lower block for a reseal? Is this not a recommended repair? 

     

    It obviously requires removal of timing chain cover and valve covers but my concern is about any dowels at bellhousing area that prevents removal w/o trans removal? If the trans has to come out it would make dropping complete drivetrain a no-brainer IMO.

     

    Edit: a google search found some pictures. As i thought the lower block is a girdle. Pulling the motor would be the only way to guarantee a leak-free repair.

     

     

    I did one of these the other day on a 2008. I dropped the front cradle and split the motor from the transaxle before resealing the bedplate. I ordered a reseal kit and did everything while it was out ... 

  4. Have you tried using a nylon tie strap to hold the belt on the pulley tightly and then rotating the pulley?

     

    I've used that method a bit before, but for this one I just walked it on while I had another tech turn the crank.

     

    When I was with Subaru they went to a stretch belt on the a/c for a couple years before reverting back to a manual adjuster. A tie down strap was my method of choice as they didn't have a factory tool for the job.

  5. Wound up doing this today on an 08 Escape. We had all of the tools in Box 33, but the drive nut that's needed off of the Rotunda power steering puller/installer is long gone. I scrounged a nut and a washer instead. As you said, it's pretty slick doing it with the tools, but without it would have been a bit of unnecessary fooling around

     

    The hardest part is getting the silly stretch belt back on ...

  6. - Finally around to resealing everything on the engine for a 3.0 Escape.

    - Rear pinion bearings on an 07 F550 with the big Dana axle

    - Clutch packs on a 9.75

    - Rear knuckles (noisy bushings), brakes, tires, alignment, door latches, front ball joints on an '11 Flex for a ton of hours

     

    all retail, but to be done by Tuesday at close ... Wednesday is a travel day before doing Ford's brakes course and then doing the HVAC one right afterward

  7. I'm not sure who is teaching. I assume Darryl in Edmonton and Geoff in Calgary.

     

    Somehow I've had Geoff teach every Ford classroom course I've ever done. When I've gone to Edmonton instead of Calgary he happened to be there, too, using the extra room while Darryl was in the main room.

     

    I'm actually a bit excited for that first course. I know it doesn't count for a ton, but with that one in the bag it'll be four and I'll have my Senior designation.

     

    Jim I'll drop you a line when I'm in Calgary at the start of April and we'll see if we can't sort something out. Slave is right en route back from Edmonton. Usually I take 43 but I don't see why I couldn't make a run up 2 to Peace River instead.

  8. Your trials sound a lot like one of those trucks that everybody gets once in a while - fix one problem only to find another. The good thing is that with the trucks it seems like you usually win in the end. I expect the same in this set of circumstances ; )

     

    Obviously everything is touch and go, but I'm heading down to Calgary for the Ford brakes course on the 3rd and 4th, and then on my way home I'm hitting Edmonton for climate control from the 8th to the 10th. Maybe on my way back to Peace River after Edmonton we can have a quick rendezvous.

  9. Two of these in the shop on the same day. Both of them are from the same company but came from different job sites. I have one of the two ..... an 08 F350 gas job.

     

    It has no real flow from the vents. I pulled the mode actuator and made sure I could manipulate the door by hand - all good. Pulled the blower - nothing there. Dig into the cowling - all sorts of organic debris ..... called an evaporator and got the okay. I'll be doing it next week, and thanks to this thread I breezed through the diag. Thanks guys!

  10. 08 Silverado with a 4.8, hydrolocked with coolant on cylinder 6 ..... quoted a reman engine, but the customer wants to take a flyer on pulling the head and having it milled and pressure checked along with a new head gasket.

     

    02 7.3 F550 for a clutch and flywheel

     

    07 F150 for an SJB

     

    aaaand, my new (to me) 2003 Sierra 3500 dually, 6.0 gas 4x4. it needs the typical GM stuff: oil and tranny cooler lines, steering shaft, x-fer case front and rear output seals, p/s pressure line from the pump to the hydro unit, one ball joint and one outer CV boot - nothing about $400 and a saturday can't fix. couldn't say no for the price, and i'm not going to lie i'm not exactly sad to see my 6.4 go. it was good to me, but who knows for how long ....

  11. 0W40 Delvac. The oil costs more, but it's also less wear and tear on batteries, starters etc. Plus, at -40 to -50 if my truck needs to start then I like to give it every advantage possible. The 0W40 retails for ~$50/gallon, although my parts department manages to keep my cost a fair bit lower than that.

     

    Also, if you're thinking that this type of oil is needed then I hope the trucks have a pan heater and battery pads to go along with the block heater.

  12. As Jim said, there is no shortage of employment opportunities here at the edge of oil country. Our base for a journeyman is $43 per flat rate hour and $1 extra for each senior, master and diesel designation held. FWIW, our door rate is $155 and the work seems to know no end. Bonus is based on the shop's monthly performance and is then dependent on your own numbers, but suffice to say that it's in the $300-600/month range.

     

    I have to admit that I like the straight forward attitude and openness that accompanies pay scales out west. Our shop pay policy is spelled out for us in black and white, and that's a far cry from the east coast where your cheque seemed dependent on your last name and your tenure. No games is the way to go.

     

    On a bit of a tangent, I agree with Brad when he says that the local economy dictates your wage. In the Yukon I made $31 flat rate + bonus, while in PEI I made $17.50 straight time (and watched my savings fly away at breakneck speed). He is also spot on when he says that earnings are a function of your skills and work ethic instead of the plaques on the wall. I earn good money because I put the effort in - that means I work on my skills (training) and I put in lots of time on the bench. This might have been a long weekend just past, but two of the three days I was in pulling wrenches. I'm glad the work is there so I try to take full advantage of it.

  13. Last year I had a 3v 5.4 come in with a complaint of 'running rough'. Fire it up and sure enough it is not well. Check engine light is on - scan and find codes for bank 1 cam sensor. Pulled the sensor and found a big ball of copper at the tip. Pulled the r/front valve cover and found the chain, chunks of a guide and the phaser all piled up. The bolt for that phaser was nowhere to be found. 

     

    The darn thing drove in on one bank which I thought was pretty impressive. I quoted an engine, it got towed away and I never saw it again.

  14. 08 Escape 3.0 for a total engine reseal. the main leak is from the upper crankcase seal.

     

    07 450 6.8 with a wandering idle (cracked intake)

     

    09 F150 used inspection, all four ball joints, all pads and rotors, oil change, only 2 ribs of the serpentine belt left remaining (the rest are wrapped around the tensioner pulley), high pressure p/s line, l/front axle seal and front pinion seal, master door lock switch, reverse sensor harness, 4 tires, 6R80 leaking from the pan and the main electrical pass through ..... if every used vehicle inspection in northern Alberta turns out like this then i will be quite happy. i'm not sure if i'm more surprised that: A] a truck can get in such poor overall condition, or B] that we're actually fixing the thing

  15. I once got stuck with my 6.9 around Watson Lake, Yukon ...... it was in the neighbourhood of 50 below. my truck didn't die, but i was running down on fuel and needed to fill up. unfortunately, the diesel pumps had frozen.

     

    i wound up waiting out the night parked inside a government garage waiting for the outside to thaw up a little. the next day a truck came in with fresh #1 on a slip tank and I got enough off of him to get home.

     

    following that i promptly went out and got myself a tidy tank.

    Good luck. If you go for training you will most likely come to Edmonton. We have a couple of good trainers here.

     

    You do indeed. I used to fly down to Calgary and Edmonton all the time. Oddly enough most of my courses were with Geoff in Calgary, and the odd time when I was in Edmonton Geoff went down to do my course in one room while Darryl was in the other.

    In the end I decided to accept their offer ...

    - signing bonus

    - very strong flat rate $, plus bonus plan

    - very nice health/dental benefits and memberships

    - 3 weeks vacation

     

    - new shop being constructed, going to 21 bays from 8

    - saying all the right things about training, tech efficiency. i was very glad to hear this.

    - booking three weeks out, just like we were in the Yukon

    - no contract to sign

     

    I'm pretty darn excited about the move. I'm weary of the 'mega' dealership scenario as was mentioned, but in the end it's worth the risk. PEI is eroding my savings at a stunning rate, and that's coming from a very strong flat rate tech who has chosen to live a thrifty life (no cell phone, no tv, etc). Also, my desire to get back north is incredibly strong. I start the drive next week so here goes nothin'.

  18. Have you ever considered Toronto?

     

    Well I grew up all around Mississauga/Brampton/Caledon East and Hockley Valley, my wife is originally form Burlington, and I still have a hunt camp up highway 41 way ....... no offense intended, but southern Ontario isn't what dreams are made of for us. Both of us like coming back to visit, but commutes, urban sprawl and rainy days in December are all things that we can do without.

    Operation east coast has not gone as planned, and after being in Charlottetown from August through to December I see my savings dwindling away toward nothing. It's time to head back out west - just not quite as far north as the Yukon this time.

     

    I have an offer on the table from Peace River Ford. I don't personally know the people and their operation, but their offer is quite attractive. If you have any feedback on this particular dealership can you please let me know. I think that any positive comments can be left out here in the open, but if you have negative things to say then a personal message may be a better venue.
