  1. someone is blowing smoke. if they had no scan tool how did they come to the conclusion that it needed a cam sensor? guess? is that worth 800bucks? they should be about a $400 repair on average.

To answer your question there are several scans tools that will work with the early PSD. the NGS, NGS+, WDS, PDA and of course the IDS. I would really hope a dealer would at least have a couple of those. they can not perform repairs on late model vehicles currently without the IDS now anyway

  2. Jim, very good post. I have learned to do alot of the things you are talking about throguhout my short career. I am only 25 but been in the business since 18. Ive worked at 3 dealers, the first for about 6 years and was kinda in the same position of no respect whatsoever, sometimes you just need to make the hard choice to go elsewhere. I am finally at a place that thinks highly of me and I see a future here. It was the best choice I could have made. I just finished my senior master cert the end of last year. Take Jims words of advice to heart, he speaks the truth and it will really help you gain respect in the trade and your store. Become that go to guy. Be efficient in getting the trucks done but also make sure its right and no evidence of you being there. I love the personal aspect of talking with customers. sometimes having them talk with you face to face will insure you get the "right" info for the concern. It also makes them feel a little more appricated when the tech takes time to explain something to them.

Sometimes with management you need to call their bluff. At first I had a few run in myself. there for the first few months of the new job they question my ability, knowledge or concern for the customer. I was prepared with plenty of ammo to back myself up, once this respect became established it was a no brainier for them. they let me do my thing because they know it will get handled as it should as quick as it can.

Good luck to you and I hope it works out.

  3. called in to todays diesel talk live broadcast to get an answer on this. they took down my info and called me back later in the day. Its supposed to be normal if you dont close the programming tool screen. which I do then clear codes. i have even closed the session and reopend. dunno I am going to get a truck in here and try what they suggested and if it doesnt work I will call back.

  4. I get these on a daily basis too and it does get old. After spending 30minutes to try and explain how they should go about a diag or repair, finding out they don't have any of the right tools or knowledge they ask If I want side work. I politely tell them no and give them a quote so they can bring it into the shop for repair. Most of the time its fleet accounts with trucks that are out of warranty. I do however get the occasional truck that broke down on the side of the road and the driver decided to pull all the fuses out and set them on the seat. I have yet to figure this out? how does that help make it run? My personal favrote and will irritate me in a heartbeat is the guy that takes his truck apart, decided he is in over his head and brings it to the shop in pieces. Then gets mad cause I charge him a little more labor to figure out his mess, his response is "I took it apart already" some people you just want to smack upside the head.

  5. no it isnt but we are kinda stuck with them being one of the main dealers to service them. just wait til it takes you an hour just to get the doghouse off due to all the electronics for a meat wagon. most of the time I pull both seats, all the radios, computers, monitors etc out just to gain access. Ive done several engines in these things too. injectors are by far the worst job tho. there just isnt any easy way to get to them.

  6. was it this one?
