  1. We are the third dealer to take a crack at it. One of the last attempts required the turbo be replaced twice in 24 miles. I'm assuming they got a "bad" one? The parts list is quite depressing! I'll look closely at it and post accurate #'s on how many times it has had "what" replaced. I believe it does spend alot of time idling as it is a service truck for a truck tire shop. Changes tires on the Interstate, etc. The fuel pressure test was in the shop only. Need to come-up with a better set-up for fuel pressure testing as I hate using the guage bar for mobile testing. When it started to act screwy on the intial drive I suspected compression getting in the fuel system. Now I kinda wish I had checked the torque on #3 & 7 inj while I had the cover off. My biggest concern is the temp in traffic. How much should the temp vary in traffic? I need to review the parameters for fan operation I suppose. Have seen it mentioned that some techs are replacing the fans with the snow-plow option part #. Seems like it might be a good idea for something that has to idle alot? I agree that the last orginal injector needs to go! I will start with checking the calibration. That may even help with the "over-boost". I don't remember seeing a re-flash listed in the history? As it was Friday evening it was a 98% improvment over what came in. Now I need to fine-tune it.
  2. This is gonna be long! Got a good one that came in Thursday evening. They said "it's doing it really bad right now" so I grabbed NGS+ and went for a ride. No cont. codes, NO on demand codes. Here is the VIN for those that can view OASIS. EDIT:89000 miles. 1FDXF46P43EC90478 It has had, since late May, several, 3 or 4 turbos, 5 inj (not including today), several egr's, FICM harness, EBP sensor & connector ,etc.....on the test drive about 7 miles out it started to lose power and pop out the intake, lots of smoke, "quiet" engine sound, ECT 215 at hwy speed, cackle......basically every symptom you ever heard of! Finally stumble it back to the shop. NO CONT CODES, NO ON DEMAND CODES, KOER PO2263. Viewed rec and didn't have anything "jump out".......I suspected EGR but it had less than 200 miles on "this one" so? Had another vehicle I had to finish so couldn't really get into it then. This morning started from scratch. No fuel in oil, fuel clear and 49lbs at filter housing. The truck is long wheel-base so had to back it up some for walk around room. Felt misfire at start-up. Ran enhanced inj diag and found #1 & 5 inj down more than -20. Ran relative comp worst cyl 4% down so OK. Decided there had to be a wiring chafe somewhere....bingo! Found chafe at EBP sensor next to where the connector was replaced. It had rubbed on the dipstick tube. I repaired that and insulated it with convoluted tubing then zip-tied it to the engine lift bracket. Replaced inj 1 & 5, they were the orginals, all RH (odd) have now been replaced. Test drove in pouring rain and it ran like a new truck! It did have one concern though? On a coast down from 60 to 35-40, on tip-in, it seemed "flat" and would pop back thru intake 2 or 3 times ocassionally. Did this 3 or 4 different times in the last 15 miles of a 30-40 mile trip. The last 5-7 miles I was in traffic and couldn't duplicate. I will run the EGR test & VGT test on Mon. Only other thing was LOTS-O-BOOST! 29lbs was common. I figured since it was SO bad on the first ride I would just fix the obvious stuff and drive it again. They said it had to get really warm before it got ugly so I'm wondering if the rain helped "fix-it"? Any suggestions welcome! I love these things!!!! NOT!!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/poke.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hitthefan.gif
  3. Sorry Keith, I just have "problems" with management types like HGM that preach about the difficulty of techs being able to turn 40hrs in a 40+hr week are the techs fault.....he's full of zhit..... See ya around, I'm done!
  4. I've seen some comments that "the times are quite attainable" that Ford sets. I can see it now (stroking chin and gazing in air)......you put duct tape over your mouth so you don't lose any time to talking, eating, drinking coffee or spending time under the SM's desk? Of course the shops that you can turn 40hrs a week doing 95% warranty also have 4 parts guys at the counter dedicated to serving the techs ONLY so you never have to wait while they try to explain to some idiot on the phone why they can't order a PS bracket for an 85 Merc Monarch! The parts are allways in stock so you don't lose time shuffling cars/trucks in and out of the shop. The writers make the complaint completely understandable on every ticket. Oh.....forgot......these are all DEALER issues!!!!! Warranty times are bullzhit! Especially on the 6.0L
  5. Shouldn't it go WAY past 950 deadheaded? Have you checked the base oil-pressure with a real guage? Sounds like either a lack of base oil pressure or the HP pump has temp related internal leakage.
  6. Whoops! Don't have a signature on this board..... 30+ years experience-ASE Master Auto Certified thru 2010-Ford Power-Stroke Certified
  7. You guarantee me 60K and I'll be there end of next week. I'm the real deal. Customer comes first in "my" world not big numbers. That is going to have to be the way of the future or we won't survive! Put your money where you mouth is!!!!!
  8. Got a 2003 F550 that shows a prod date of 04/03 and has a 6.0L. What month was the "introduction" of the 6.0L? I'm asking because it has seven PCM codes with intermitant CEL. When moving FICM harness just left of fuel filter housing engine misfires so assuming harness is damaged by intake bolts. The 05S34 "program" was supposed to cover prod dates after 09/03? They only list one part # for the FICM harness so don't guess it matters just curious? I can't remember when the 6.0L was released? Am I just having a brain-fart here?
  9. Use a small slide-hammer with a screw in the end of it. Been there, done that!
  10. Well.....don't guess it matters now! I quit today....that's the 3rd job this year???? Do these idiots actually believe the shit they spew? "hang in their, it will get better...." "you just started and it takes time to adjust to a new system..." "suck my **censored** and I'll pay you for it later????" Well....he didn't actually say the last one but you've all heard the same..... Worked 92.5 hrs last pay, missed one day or it would have been a nice even 101, made 54.3 hrs! Yee-ha! When you're doing 98% warranty 6.0L and the only customer work you see are cars with 4000-20,000 miles for a LOF it's really tough to turn any time. The services, brake jobs, etc, got done "closer" to the service desk. I'm done. Screw it. Going home and seeing what it takes to declare bankruptcy. Will just bum around there and pick-up some work. I'm so burnt-out I just can't do it anymore at the dealer level. My back is too tired to bend over far enough to get to their level. This shop was really proud of the fact the had a wireless router.....of course YOU had to provide YOUR computer. Walking 1/4 mile round trip from my bay to run Oasis just got to be too much! Did I say SCREW IT?
  11. What is available and useable that a tech might be able to afford? I just found-out the software for a PDA is around $3800.00? Don't think I can swing that! I remember when the guys at FlatRateTech were singing the praises of DiagTech I believe? Don't think it's available now though as they were bought out......
  12. Moving next week to just outside of Greensville SC. Finally found a dealership that believes we deserve to have an income guarantte (30hrs), fully paid ins, 401K, uniforms, etc. They are in the process of setting up a truck shop so will have a dedicated work area. Looks good but time will tell. Wanted to start early next week but it looks like it will take me a little longer to get settled.
  13. Take a wooden dowel, hammer handle, etc, and push on the FICM harness. Just wiggle it around and see if the truck dies. If it does you will likely find an intake bolt has abraided the harnness. It shorts to ground and quits. There is a recall out for this now.
  14. Been too broke to go very far. Sold by motorcycle Sat to "finance" my travel expenses. Heading out today to do some looking around in NC. I sent an email to Nashville Diesel College inquiring about the teaching requirements for Tenn. Expect to hear something back in next couple of days.
  15. Done deal! The NGS went for $1299.00 as i had set a "buy-it-now" price. I have an OTC 4000 Enhanced with cartridges thru 02 that will do most of the same tests that the NGS does so I'm not completely out. Seriously looking at getting out of the "wrenching" side of the business. Will be in Nashville checking out the Diesel college next week. I still like fixing cars but just can't handle the pressure of trying to produce QUANITIY while still keeping quality up. I've had several calls/emails from dealers but it's basically the same deal everywhere. No guarantee, "we're really busy" (but no guarantee), we've got PLENTY of parts, (no guarantee)....etc.....etc.....I can't move several hundred miles with no guaranteed income! Either pay me a salary with commisson or forget it. Ain't gonna do it!
  16. So how many of took tests or re-certified? I took all eight auto re-cert tests in 1 hr & 50 mins. Just checked the ASE website. I'm an Auto Certified Master Tech again! That makes 3 times I've taken all 8 at one time and passed them. Wish fixing cars was as easy as taking tests!
  17. I think they need to start building them the same way we have to repair them. Put the cab on the frame and then put the motor and trans in. Then they can tell ME how to fix their screw-up!
  18. The shop I just left was at 14-16hr F/R but they had alot of customer pay work. I talked to another shop about 100 miles NW, not too far below Charleston, that couldn't believe the pay rate was that low as they were at 20-23hr F/R! I'm waiting on my ASE recert results to come back as you must be an ASE Master to qualify for a teaching position. I suspect that will be the direction I try to go. Any news on the new 6.0 recalls?
  19. I'm unemployed again! Not sure what they wanted/expected me to do. Turned 37.7 hours for two weeks and they were suprised i quit! I have some warranty time coming, maybe 20 hours? At the measly hourly rate they paid I needed to turn at least 50 hours a week! Looking again!
  20. I didn't realize the NGS wasn't really a viable tool for the sick-o! This is the type of info I need to learn. Heading south tommorrow for some interviews.
  21. Thought I would give the guys here first crack at it. If nothing happens by Tuesday evening I'll do E-Bay. It's works fine.....as far as I remember.... I've used it 3-4 times recently and the tech beside me has borrowed it a few times but I'm broke and likely gonna be moving again. Need money to travel. I do appreciate the support though.I've seen alot of guys that want eveyone to think it's "out-dated". I figure there are alot of non-CAN equipped vehicles on the road if you don't have a VCM available. I'm trying to keep from selling my dirtbike! It may go next week too......
  22. Hope this is OK? I have a well used NGS with 2 programable cards, EEC-IV & EEC-V cables, manuals, case and a couple of older cards. First offer over $1100.00 takes it. The shop I'm working in doesn't seem to need or want to use my best skills so I'm likely gonna have to move on again. In my last dealer job I turned at least 15 hrs a week of diag time with the NGS @ 21.00hr F/R. In this shop to date after three weeks, .5hrs of diag time @ 14hr F/R! Sure won't miss the NGS here! I need traveling money. Will deliver within 400 miles of Southern WV. Likely will be unemployed again tommorrow! Either pay me or loose me, right!
  23. Do they have a flash that will fix a broken EGR cooler? I'D PAY for that one! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/readthis.gif
