Turns out my regulator was broken and I was going way over 20 PSI. Couldn't find any leaks and it received a new SCR. Which BTW fixed the concern.

2006 F350 with a 2004 1/2 engine smoking

Due to his warranty no longer paying, we stopped trying to fix it. He has now taken it to another dealership in Edmonton. We know this because they just called us wondering what was up with this thing. Lets see how far they get with it. -
There is no way this is for real

They sent me a used engine, only 25,000 kms on it. Lot less than the 177,000 on the current engine. I need to tear down the old one to show Global warranty what they are so graciously paying $3000.00 for..... The selling dealer is covering the rest.

Unless whatever caused you to leave has changed, the extra money is not worth the hassle of putting up with the same old BS.

2006 F350 with a 2004 1/2 engine smoking

I have done one 6L camshaft. Caught it before it got to bad. No bearing damage, or other signs of metal in engine. -
Sounds like it is loading up on fuel. Back when I actually hooked a scan tool up to a 7.3L we would change the IPR and ICP for this concern. Most would be fixed, the odd few we would have to start getting up close and personal with the injectors, some would get all 8 before they ran right.

My take is this- You should have one of 2 reasons for owning a diesel pick-up. 1: the truck makes you a shit tonne of money and you can afford the fuel and maintenance with out modifications. 2: You already have a shit tonne of money to afford the fuel and maintenance with out modifications. IMO any Ford Superduty is an awesome truck. The engine choice should bepend on your budget and useage.

Not in my bay yet, but I did go out to the parking lot to go look at it. 2011 F350, 6.7L with an engine knock complaint. 173,000 KM with an aftermarket warranty. EGR cooler bypassed, exhaust deleted, non-ford air box, oil way overfull and no sign of a tuner. Customer bought it 2 weeks ago from the new Hyundai dealer down the road. I haven't started it yet, and won't until I can verify the presense of a tuner or they give me the stock pieces to put back in. Let the fun begin. Update: Just got a call from the selling dealership. They removed the tuner, but left the modifications intact, before giving the customer the truck because they didn't want it to interfere with his warranty. They are going to bring us the tuner to install so we can start it to see what is going on. Will update later. All they did was take the thing off the dash so we wouldn't see it. Started the truck and it sounds like it has a bent connecting rod and something is bouncing off the crankshaft. Waiting for ok from warranty company to tear into it. So I got the OK to teardown and inspect. Get this, the Global warranty only covers $3000.00 of the repair. Customer has only had the truck for 2 weeks. Since I am pretty sure there are no short blocks available yet for a 6.7L, but I could be wrong, parts is checking, I doubt $3000.00 will come even close to fixing this one. I hope it gets towed out of here. As much as I would love to do a retail teardown on this engine, we may end up with no-one paying for it in a while.

Compression is 310 across the board. which is good in these parts. His warranty is letting us put in the 2 injectors. I have heard failing lifters and cams and this is not that type of noise. It's more of a fuel knock. It's even worse on a cold start. Fingers crossed. Now all I get is blue, and it smells like oil. GRRR.. Shop foreman has told me to stop working on it for now. Time to move on, his warranty company is about ready to stop paying. Update: Our roaming hotline helper was in for another vehicle we are having issues with, it's a head scratcher that one, I picked his brains on this. The 2004 HPOP is not compatible with the 2006 calibration and will throw the injection pressure out. Current bill has been paid and truck is gone. -

Pretty sure it's not the egr cooler. Leak tested it screaming hot and no leaks. Oil cooler didn't get past 9F. I did however notice an odd noise from the engine. Relative compression puts 7 down 1%. power balance has #7 at plus 10%. Cut #7 and the noise goes away. Gonna do a manual compression on this pig and maybe throw #7 an injector depending. Dealing with an out of country warranty company is tricky though. -
It's either a government conspirecy or snowmageddon. Dawn of the next Iceage.

3 minute key off wait time after parameter reset.

That extra .1 adds up when you factor in how many of these modules we have to reset in a week. -
He needs a little more of something else I think, and not the kind that costs $165.

Keep your scooter parked Jim. They just forecasted rain today and 15 CM of SNOW for the weekend. Did I mention I love Alberta weather?

We have sent 1 set of heads out for the instalation of fire rings and they machined them, but I am not sure how much. There has been no complaints thus far. Been over 3 years. I beleive the WSM states that local machine shops don't have the required machines to be able to match the fineness of the machining. I don't think it has to do with deck height. More-so the quality of the final product.

2006 F350 with a 2004 1/2 engine smoking

We are thinking it might possibly be the EGR cooler. It was changed, but the oil cooler does not look like it has been changed. We have checked the exhaust and it is dry. The customer is now checking CARFAX to see if he can find some info on the engine being replaced. We were going to loosen the exhaust manifolds to try to narrow down the smoke source. It's all on hold now till we get some idea about the engine. -
2006 F350 with a 2004 1/2 engine smoking
lmorris posted a topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
At operating temps, when accellerating it belches out some whitish/blueish/grayish smoke, no stumble, then clears up and is fine till it idles again. Cold start it is a little rough but clears up right away. Has after market intake and exhaust. Now here is the kicker. The engine is of the 2004 1/2 variety. ICP in the head with the old style HPOP. Did some parts checking and the injectors for this engine are the 4c3z's. It's the old style HPOP I am concerned about. 7 of the 8 injectors look fairly new, but power balance is a little wavy but no percieved engine miss is evident. Customer bought used and is trying to find out when or where the engine was done. He is from the USA and has an aftermarket warranty. All testing has passed, except oil cooler performance has not been done yet. The turbo, EGR cooler, EGR valve are all new as well. We had the cac apart to check for oil and its good. We replaced the oil rail stand pipes and fuel line check valves to get rid of some erratic fuel pressure and slight roughness of idle. Engine is smooth running and has lots of power. Hotline was no help on the calibration issue of having the wrong engine in thew truck. PCM matches the model year. -
And if you think about it, it all comes down to the all-mighty dollar. If someone is willing to pay money for something, then there is someone out there willing to do it. Plus, you have to scratch your head and wonder about the mindset of the people portrayed in some of these reality shows. Are they doing for there 15 minutes of fame or is it a true passion they wish to share with the world. IMHO, some things need to be kept private. It's not even entertaining. Besides, extreme couponing doesn't work in Canada, because you can't double up coupons here...Yes I have seen the show..

Jim, are you meaning the Buck Rogers with Gil Gerard, or an eariler version? I loved that show as a kid. -
I was told if there is a ridge by the firering that catches your finger nail, you need to replace the head.

It's good for a laugh Jim. You simply go into it with the mind set of watching AFV. Get yourself a nice bottle of something special, relax and have a good laugh at someone elses expence.

So after contacting hotline for approval on an SCR replacement and being instructed to check intake and exhaust system leaks as well as EGR cooler performance, because these can all set this code, I am now wondering about the integrity of these shut down valves. It also seems that all the trucks we get in that set this code have some kind of shut down valve. Anyone experience this and verified this as a possible source of a leak? Also: Has anyone successfully pressure up the intake, using shop air, to 20 PSI for a smoke test? I get 10 PSI in it and the PCV hose pops off and it almost sent the air box lid flying across the shop. Applying air to EGRT sensor hole per hotline instructions.
