Yeah right. I'm sure these manifolds come off really easily. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif The fuel was leaking out the spill port, not the pintle. I thought about removing the plugs on the cyl heads to look for fuel coming out the return rail, but I don't think it would be that obvious. There really isn't much ruel coming out the spill port. What could cause low compression after headgaskets

So this thing ended up having a total of 3 bent pushrods. I never understood how this happened until a couple days ago when I was talking to this tech. As it turns out, he decided to leave the rocker arms on the cylinders when removing and installing the heads. I'm sure he probably left the oil resivoirs on the heads too. What does this have to do with the pushrods? All of the pushrods were standing up in the block when he put the cylinder head back on the block. Now I see how something disasterous like this can happen. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/surprise.gif This tech also did not turn the crank so the dowel was facing down. I never totally understood this step, but always did it and never had a problem. I guess that because tightening the head bolts is putting pressure on the pushrods it would be a good idea to have the engine in a position where there aren't any valves all the way open. Can anyone else explain that better to me? -

The injectors are not plugged in. I didn't mention this but I thought it was obvious. Besides, the system would not build enough pressure to fire the injectors.

This guy must either be a total butcher or he dosen't mind working like an animal. I had a old boss that was always telling me I should R&R the pan with the engine in the truck. I might be able to do it, but it will be a total "grey silicone mess". Then I would have to cross my fingers that it dosen't leak. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Keith, I think these fuel systems are really sensitive to a loss of fuel pressure in the high pressure system. I'm thinking that #6 is overfuelling (or leaking into the cyl). I think that this will affect how the other injectors perform. I had one that had the low icp codes and was not producing enough high pressure fuel for the PCM to fire the injectors. I took all the injectors out and then hooked them up to thier line, but pointing straight up. Then I cranked the engine to see which one was leaking fuel. I have to say that it wasn't much of a fuel leak. I was really suprised how low my FRP reading was. This is still a learning experience for me every time I work on one of these things. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/coffee.gif

I think I had a p0046 a little over a week ago. I put a VGT solinoid in it and it was fixed. Maybe yours needs a turbo cleaning too. Mine had a new turbo on it already, but it does not come with the VGT soliniod.

We use a sandblaster and it works very nice. It does a much nicer job than a "wizz-wheel".

Whoops!! One large step backwards... this is an 05 and RFI should not be an issue... even though the wiring diagrams show 519 and 523 as a twisted pair. Jim, Why should RFI not be a problem? I would think if there were an issue with the sensor gap, the problem would not be intermitent. We know that the wiring from the sensor to the module is good. The module and the sensor are new. I think this is a ground issue of RFI is interfering with the sensor signal. Here is another thought... What if you just have another bad sensor. Kind of like Jim was saying, don't assume anything. I work with a guy that one time had a car that had a bad DPFE sensor. He replaced it and the car came right back. The dummy mixed up the new and old part and ended up putting the bad part back on the car. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/boink3.gif

Have we been replacing any headgaskets lately since the prior aproval thing started? The last 2 I had, I was sure needed headgaskets, but only had a bad EGR and oil cooler. Now I have one that is venting from the de-gas bottle on accel. I took the thing apart today expecting to find a leaking EGR cooler, but it was fine. The cooling system would only go down to 15in. vacuum. The oil cooler is restricted, but not nearly as bad as some other ones I have seen.

Keith, we had an ambulance with what I think was a whinning noise. It was not a constant noise. I think it was off idle, but it turned out to be the HP oil pump. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif

I just got done with a HP fuel pump last week. The thing was leaking and causing the oil level to rise. The truck only has 4,000 miles on the odometer and the engine was maybe 3 quarts overfilled. Anyway, after a couple days they took this thing out of state and called us up saying that the message center was saying to replace the DPF. From what my SW was saying I'm not 100% sure that they were using ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. We haven't heard back from them in a couple days and I was just wondering if anyone has been replacing theese things. It says in the manual that they should last 250,000 miles. I didn't think that the oil was that diluted to take out the DPF.

I followed the procedure in the book after a HP fuel pump and the truck fired right up without any problems. Maybe I just got lucky.

I had one today that I had to heat the pipe cherry red. It loosened up really nice and then just stopped. It ended up breaking off in the DPF pipe. I took the DPF out, was able to clean the threads up just enough for the rest of the sensor to come out. Then I ran a tap down and it is as good as new. Last week I had a EGT1 sensor that was stuck in the RH turbo up-pipe. That thing would only turn 1/4 turn and it was stuck. I grabbed a brand new tuck to "borrow" a EGT1 sensor and that thing was the same way. It turned 1/4 turn and it was stuck. The worst thing about that was that I just got done putting it together after doing a HP fuel pump, and I didn't even have a continious DTC when the truck came in. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif I replaced 4 of theese EGT sensors last year and they all came out really easy, so I don't know what the deal is. Good info. I used liquid Tide in my last oil cooler mess and I think it worked pretty good. I like the idea of testing this stuff. I'll have to do that sometime. -
I'm not saying that this is your problem, but I have seen the wiring harness chafe on the LF shock. Might be worth looking at.

Tony, could this rear sensor be picking uo some sort of RF interference? Is this a modified truck? strobe lights? Or is it possible that a coil is causing RF interference? I had one a while ago, but I would get a dtc for the relay in the abs module and it would happen as soon as I accelerated. You mentioned that the signal for the rear sensor was erratic. Did it get better after you replaced the wiring and module did the reading get better?

I think were doing OK. We did slow down a little bit in the last couple of weeks, but there is still enough work to last all day. Heck, last night I went back to work after I put my kids to bed and I was there until 11:45PM. These guys are saying that we are slow, but they don't know what slow is. Slow is punching in at 7:30am and getting your first job at 9:00am. Or spending all afternoon on the internet because you were done working at 1:00pm.

Two words Scott, Quick Lane. You'll get yours soon enough. What probably happened was the 4 guys playing grab ass and snapping each other with rags distracted the 1 guy that was working. He's just glad he didn't put 15 gallons of oil in a diesel agian instead of 15 quarts. I'll email you later Scott.
