  1. I hope those six bolts keep those Aluminum heads from twisting. However, (out here in Redneck central) these things will get abused big time and I imagine that if there any weak spots that they will definitely show up out here.
  2. When I first saw the 6.4L press release, I didn't have one good thing to say about that ugly fucker. Maybe everyone else saw something better than I did though.
  3. I know what your talkin about. I have seen the same things many times. Damned nice trucks and they tip very well.
  4. I agree with Arron. You shoulda welded a nut to the bolt and shoulda also let them bastards soak with tuneup cleaner or weasel piss for a freakin day with frequent replenishing of the weasel piss to help loosen the carbon up that gets trapped in the threads. I've been there. But now that there is a gouge in the metal surface, I'd say that heads a fucked for sure. May the force be with you.
  5. That turbo sure is funky. Dual outlets for double compressor wheel by the looks of it. Is that a wastegate I see on that VGT turbo? Is that a failsafe for overboost in case of a stuck VGT or something like that? Whoooowwww, and four rocker arms per cylinder. That must be freakin tight under the valve covers. The EGR cooler setup deffinately looks alot better than the crap we're dealing with now. I like how it is all contained in one unit. See, I'm not always a negative S.O.B. I can find some good things to say sometimes. It will still take a while to see how this baby holds up though. That second article is a great find Mutter.
  6. I'm getting to know allot about this engine already. The only chance I get to read about it is on coffee breaks. I'm too busy working to read anything about it, but Jim's reading the whole article to us out loud so we can concentrate on work and learn at the same time. He's like a kid in the candy store when info like this comes out. Can I see, can I see, huh, please can I see? Keep up the good work Jim.
  7. Graphite Iron Engine Block: Interesting. Sooooooo when the bearings spin, will they spin easier? That oil cooler on the left hand side of the block seems to look familiar. Looks like they took the element of the existing cooler we use and stuck it on the side of the block. Unless that's the fuel cooler. Is that still a Siemens Injection pump I see? I s that freekin thing still under the turbo? I hope she holds up. But not too good that we're all outa work.
  8. Bahhhh Humbug! I have done so farkin many of these freakin head gaskets that it's freakin insane. When I was at Fourlane, I had a pile stacked behind my toolbox as a souvenir. I have seen many many headgasket repairs with factory studs come back within anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000kms and had blown head gaskets again. I have been at this shop for 10 months now and have seen about four previously repaired sets of head gaskets with stock bolts and have had blown gaskets again. In fact, we have on in the shop here right now. I have never seen a set of head gaskets blow on a truck that I have repaired myself with ARP studs nore have I seen them blown on any trucks that have had anyone else put ARP studs in. In fact, We here call it the 60,000 to 100,000 km service. You will need head gaskets replaced that often if you use those piece of crap TTY bolts. I seem to remember someone saying: Every "Retail" head gasket repair on a Six Litre deserves ARP studs. I would have to agree. As well as warranty repairs if the customer is willing to pay for the studs. The way I see it is that ARP studs save both the customer and Ford a shit load of money down the road.
  9. You mean a swinging variable trim panel remover?
  10. Sorry about that Jim. I was doin my usual reading of the threads at 5:00 and Kyle just had to come over and read what was goin on. At least your fellow comrade is concerned for ya. I tell him to just join this site already, but he'll probably say he won't wanna get hooked on the computer like us.
  11. jim ,this is kyle, you are on holidays. stay the fuck off the computer or u will bee even more stressed out. self induced. haha.
  12. LOL. Jim's on Hollidays. Holy shit Jim. I was expecting another long winded one from ya. But holy shit!
  13. Just base this on the whole engine and the injection system if you want. Leave the EGR, emissions systems and turbo's out of it and lets compare all three Powerstrokes. Cylinder heads have to be included as well, being that they are part of the engine. And even though the six litre is over stressed in Ford's application, it was designed to completely replace the 7.3L and 444E. 7.3l: Eighteen bolts per head to start with, a totally beefy engine that could take a shit load of abuse and live through lack of maintenance on the lubrication and fuel side of things as well. What ever went wrong with them that wasn;t all that easy to fix? Push rods, injectors on a rare occasion and some high pressure oil system leaks, etc. 6.0L: 10 rubber head bolts per head that stretch the minute you put a trailer behind these units, lifters failing, cam lobes grinding off to often in my experience, an oil cooler system that is a joke (just look at Bruce's photo's), Cold stiction issues like crazy even when they are maintained, internal injection system leaks, etc. I'm most likely forgetting some things. 6.4L: Believe it or not I believe this is a better base engine platform than the six litre if you leave the finicky fuel injection system out of it. But: Bigger head bolts than the six litre, easier to service rocker arms, aaaannnnnddddd.....not much else. Now put 15,000lbs behind each truck with everything else the same such as manual transmissions, gear ratio's, etc and pull that 15,000lbs for a five year span and see which one has more repairs. the 7.3L is a no brainer. It can take it. Even the 6.4L won't have an issue if the radiator holds up and the fuel is always clean. But there is now way that the six litre would last without popping a set of head gaskets and something in the injections system. Sure, if you add the same types of emissions to a 7.3L there will be issues. But the base engine will not be the culprit and neither would it be on the 6.4L. Therefore, I still believe the Sick-0 is a piece of junk. Hey, it's just my opinion. Don't shoot me for it.
  14. LOL. I take it that you aren't getting that kinda mileage with your test bed unit. Not that I would expect these units to get that kinda mileage at all either. On a side note, I know we talk different numbers in mileage quite allot due to the fact that we use imperial gallons up here as compared to your U.S gallons which is 4.546 liters vs 3.89 liters. lets not get Jim going on that French crap of liters per 100 km's either. I prefer the "NON GAY" language of English. It just makes it easier to communicate with the "HETEROSEXUAL" U.S tech hotline engineers.
  15. As I've said before. The 6.8L has been tried, tested and true for many years now. But is no where near recognized enough. $8,000.00 less than a 6.4l, less money on maintenance, repairs, etc. You can buy allot of fuel for that kind of money and feel very comfortable knowing that you could do a cross country trip without having to tow alternate transport or a roadside hotel (travel trailer because you will need it).
  16. I thought Dalton Mcguinty was a squiggley little piece of crap chewin the ole' fat. And he aint no where as appealing as Bacan. In fact, he leaves a shitty taste in most westerners mouth. So Ontario can keep him. I'll stick with bacon.
  17. No freakin French at all Please. Them dirty beggers will do nothin but screw it up. Bacon is a Canadian and American if you wish delicatessen and just shouldn't be screwed with. Bacon goes great with anything and almost everything: Coffee, eggs, burgers, chilly cheese and bacon hot dogs, pizza, Caesar salads, any damned salad, pancakes, any damned sandwich, oh and don't ever forget bacon wrapped oven roasted chestnuts. i could go on forever, but please don;t be sac-religious and allow the French to screw this one up. I can only imagine what they would do with bacon and call it. Anyone ever heard of how screwed up Quebec is about margarine? http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008/07/09/f-margarine.html
  18. Thanks Keith. That's the one I was looking for. I did find the pictures in photo post under Bruce's name. Damn he has some damned good pictures. And I guess it's all the frame of mind at that point in time. I wasn't thinking about cups because I was thinking of cracked heads. But thanks again.
  19. I know we had a post on this and Bruce had some great cut away photos to show how the cups sit in the heads and prove that this is usually a cracked head. Anyone able to help me find this post?
  20. It ain't flat rate reading at all. I just don't believe that we should forget about looking at fan pids if we don't get a DTC for it. I don't know about you, But I have seen faulty fans with out dtc's. Don't forget that we live in Alberta where riggers have more money than brains and 50% of these idiots are running chips or tuners. What are you gonna do when that customer pulls his tuner out out his truck out front of the the dealership and leaves us with a P1000? And how about the other scenario that we seem to see way too often now, where another dealership puts an IAT sensor in it for overheating or a thermostat and clears all DTC's? Oh well I guess we don't have to look at the fan clutch now, do we? Like I said, many spring chickens may not think this way and it is something we shouldnt overlook.
  21. Another thing that I really don't like about this TSB is the fact that they have eliminated the fan clutch diagnosis. While many of us may know to diagnose it properly, there are spring chickens coming up in this trade that may not know fan clutches were a concern in the previous TSB's. If I had more time right now, I could mention allot more that I don;t like about the TSB. But I gotta work.
  22. My freakin eyes are bugged out from reading all that Jim. The TSB still sucks Balls. It should be a Recall. But then again, the gumamnent would have to bail Ford out if that were ever to happen. And I don't think anyone ever said they would quit doing a test. I just got fooled by actually doing a test that doesn't allways produce accurate results. But 135 psi of shop air to the cooler provided more accurate results. But he TSB still sucks Balls!
  23. Thanks for your opinions. I feel the same way. This fuckin TSB sucks balls.
  24. What fuckin floors me is that this fuckin thing got paid through warranty and made it into the system. How the fuck does an illegitimate repair like this get paid for? And why the fuck can't we get legitimate repairs paid for? Oh, I know. The repair was below the group national average for repair costs and some monkey at the other end is thinking, We better pay this one because it's a cheap repair.
  25. Has anyone had the Rad Kit Plus fool them yet? I just Diaged one of these where the Rad Kit Plus would not leak down. I leave it on for well over fifteen minutes when I do these. This one in particular did not leak down. But pulled the EGR cooler off and the sum bitch is wet in the back and fails with air on it. Talk about egg in the face.
