  1. Has anyone had to do this yet? Im looking for some tips to make it as painless as possible. I had an oil leak that seems to have been coming from the top of the dipstick tube. I checked the bottom o ring which was fine. Decided to do a crankcase pressure test and found it to be at the upper threshold of 8 in. h20 @3000psi. Disconnected VGT actuator and that number dropped to 4 inches of h20 leading me to believe the turbo seal was blown and pressurizing the crankcase. Hotline seem to agree with me and wants me to remove turbos, block off oil feed and retest. If the CCP is still @ 4 I have to replace the Hi-pressure turbo? Any advice?
  2. You all bring up very good points. But part of my situation is that I am diesel certified. I have all specialty certifications except auto and manual trans. I think my service director thinks he has us by the balls because 6 dealers in the greater L.A. area hve closed 2 of which were truck and fleet centers. I don't mean to sound like a whiney little bitch, but I guess I just need to vent with people that have an understanding for how difficult and time consuming our jobs really are. There are times that I want to do what I've seen some guys do like fix an oil leak with a can of engine bright and a pressure washer then flag the shit out of the ticket, and ship it. But, im just not willing to compromise my integrity to make a buck. I wasn't raised that way. Anyway, thanks for the opinions
  3. I had a FSE tell me that if there are highly visible, shiny stars of david on the top of the pistons, a hi-po programmer was used. He said that the way to extract more power is to inject more fuel. OE injectors are very limited to the amount of fuel they can inject. So what the programmers do is command the injectors on earlier than normal so that they may inject more fuel. Since it is done earlier, the spray pattern goes outside of the piston bowl causing the star of david thing.
  4. My lead just got our first 6.4 runaway. It had a terrible clanking sound, and if the rpm's went above 3000 it would just go. If you pulled the key out, it would take it a few seconds then shut down. The engine is currently on a rotisserie. I'll keep ya posted on what we find.
  5. Let me get your guys' opinion. I am a farely new tech. Yes, I graduated UTI like some of you, but never claimed to know it all (just most of it) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/king.gif jk. Anyway, Ive been flagging for almost 1 year. I make $20 Flat rate. I never make my 80 hours per pay period, while clocking 90-100 hours. I work hard and am very honest. I do my best, and the fact that I can count my rechecks on one hand since ive been flagging makes me feel like im a good tech. I do alot of crap work, i.e. heads, engines, cooling system concerns, coolers(oil, egr),oil leaks. My benefits are terrible. $850/month to cover me and the family(just medical). I declined it of course. So, all this and the jack ass that calls himself a diesel tech on the other side of the shop gets praised for flagging 150+ hrs, but doesnt fix shit. I got one of his rechecks. When I checked the history, this jack ass replaced the turbo once, and put 3 EGR valves in it. When I got it, after proper diagnosis, I found it had blown headgaskets, and a melted #3 piston. When I asked for a raise, the service director said he doesnt see why I should because "I dont see how diesel is any harder than a gas engine." /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif With a wife, 2 kids, and a mortgage I don't see any reason to continue to try and advance my dealership career when I can make better money in another field (mechanical repair of some sort), and quality, not quantity is important. Do you? Or am I being unreasonable?
  6. I have 2 ambulances, 1 is a 7.3 that needs HPOP, valve cover gasket, and a front cover gasket. The 6 liter needs head gaskets and a few injectors. Did I mention I hate ambulances /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif
  7. It wasnt coolant, it was diesel fuel. I stinged a little. Just glad I had my mouth closed /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hitthefan.gif
  8. When I was just starting out, I got a 6 liter that was hydrolocked. So my trainer and I pushed this monster into my bay. I pull all the glow plugs on the left side of the engine. So I say, "whats next?" He says "watch this side of the engine and tell me what cylinder all the diesel comes out of as I crank it." Needless to say I got hosed down with diesel and enough pressure to knock my baseball cap off my head. So after a blind walk to the eye wash station, he say's "so did you see what cylinder it was?" My reaction- /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
  9. Question. I read tsb 7-15-6. Does it imply that I am to charge M time for diagnosing all those components only, and use slts for the labor ops and times, or M time the whole job from diag to Final road test? I just started flagging hours and am still learning how to get the paid properly for my labor. Any tips, suggestions, would be so appreciated.
  10. Can anyone in the states post what the average warranty labor they get for heads? The jackasses that do our warranty never want to give me more than 15 hours. They give me the 14.5 for the gaskets and .2 for the egr cooler. When I flag it I usually come up with about 18.0 depending on year. But then I end up getting back flagged. And it pisses me off because Im sure most of you know the level of difficulty and the amount of time involved in doing this job correctly. Any help with this issue would greatly be appreciated.
  11. I've done heads with and without the cab on/off. If its a crew cab I'll leave the cab on, if its a supercab or reg cab, I'll lift the cab. I don't remove the evap box when cab on. I remove the passenger side motor mount nuts and jack up just the right side of the engine with a piece of 2x4 and the jack up against the right side of the bellhousing. That gives enough room to access the right side headbolts. Once the bottom 3 headbolts are loose I tie them up with a zip tie to not interfere with the block when I lift them out using the cherry picker. Sounds complicated, I know, but it works for me.
