  1. I would try ATF. Drive it gently for 20 or 30 km to get it warm and see if that will clean it up? Mine still had powertrain warranty when I replaced the PTU (85,000km), but to make sure it lasts off warranty I will be servicing it regularly. Adding a drain plug if not equipped would also be great idea. I have done that on a few front diffs to avoid having to pop the pan for a simple fluid replacement.
  2. Pretty sure it turns off pilot injection.
  3. I put a ptu in my 2010 flex for this concern, stinky like a propane leak at idle, and black goo in the ptu. Smell is gone. I think the issue is more the fact that it only holds 1/2L of fluid. Maybe the drain plug is to introduce a maintenance interval and prevent the fluid from breaking down. I know I will be replacing the fluid in mine once in a while now.
  4. Any of these I have had have all been leaking injector bodies. If it was a truck that had the injector recall way back when, look closely at any injectors that didn't get changed. I know its tough on these, but get her good and hot, then rip the covers off, so the engine is still quite warm, then run up hp fuel pressure with dye in the fuel.
  5. That is basically the answer I have been give anytime I have contacted hotline for ids concerns. I gave up contacting them and just do an uninstall/ reinstall automatically now. Glad it worked for you!
  6. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the entire ids program. I have had bad update downloads cause weird stuff like this before.
  7. I had one with a knock that I could hear the loudest in the rh exhaust manifold studs with a stethoscope. A cylinder head fixed it. Found what looked like severe galling on one of the #4 exhaust valve stems. I think the valve was hanging just enough to come off the cam lobe and slam shut, but not enough to hit the piston.
  8. Noted today after changing my broken branch tube. If the 1 piece stc eliminator is not correctly aligned before it is bolted to the branch tube block it WILL break the branch tube. When I loosened the two bolts that hold the stc block to the branch tube block, they separated by 1/16" on one side and stayed tight on the other. That is why the branch tube is broken. F*ck me. Kudos to anyone who accomplishes that job in the truck with the body on. I pulled the engine, and would never do it any other way.
  9. Guess what I just diaged today.... broken branch tube on an 06 f-550. Air test sounded just like a bad stc fitting, so I dove in and tore off the pump cover. My stomach dropped when I found it had the new 1 piece fitting in it. I closed the ipr with my ipr jumper harness, and put air back to it. Branch tube is broken completely off on the drivers side of the connector block. Now the interesting part. It has a VMAC, it is a service body, and I can't lift it, as it is too heavy for my hoist. I am thinking I should pull the engine vs try to pull the trans on the floor. What do you guys think? Oh yeah, I leave for holidays on Friday at 3, it needs to be done before I leave....
  10. Unbelievable. Stir the fuck out of that pot. Send in a hotline request asking if the 3.7l is ti-vct and explain why you are asking.
  11. They should put a big fluorescent pink sheet in there with a reminder to transfer it. I can't understand why they would leave it out, all the other plugs are installed, and they know what side the head is going on, as the cam is already installed.
  12. Stupid thing is, the only pid I forgot to record is ebp. DOH.
  13. I had a friend of mine complain about an ammonia type odor from his 2012 last year. I verified it, at idle it smelt heavily of a chemical of some sort from the tailpipe. No codes were present, I told him to try a different kind of def for his next fill, and never heard back from him. I did replace the def pump on it a few months later for a low pressure concern/ code, not sure if it was at all related.
  14. Yes and always remember to transfer the plug to the new ford head, as they don't install them. Years ago a guy at our shop put a rh head on a lightning, and didn't notice that plug was not in. Holy f*&cking mess. He somehow managed to get the plug in without pulling it back apart. I put a head on an 08 f-150 4.6 the other day and I still remembered to look, and nope, it wasn't there.
  15. My theory on that Kieth is a combination of blown out tensioner gaskets and too low of idle speed. Oil starvation to the top end at hot idle. Ever notice what happens to hot idle oil pressure when you bump the idle up to 7 or 800. I wish there were accessable pressure taps on the heads to prove it. I think on an e series one could tap into the back of the rh head, where the tensioner oil feed is, but on f-series it would be almost impossible.
  16. I have an 09 f-350 dually ( a friends truck) that is setting this code. It will only do it pulling his trailer (39' toy hauler) up a large hill. It pulls like mad (has an h&s tuner and full delete exhaust) and then all of a sudden it de-rates and falls on its head. I went out the other night with him with an IDS connected, we pulled his trailer up the same 8% 4km long hill 3 times. Of the 3 pulls it only de-rated once. The strange think is no pids looked out of range anywhere. The only thing I can see is that VGT was at a very low %, around 5% I think, mgp was 36 ish, all temps were good. Every time I have ever scanned this thing it had no codes, except right after it de-rated, I pulled cmdtcs and p2263 came up. Im thinking a sticking vgt, but have never watched pids on a 6.4l pulling that hard.
  17. I've seen a few of those do that. One was on warranty when it happened, but we called abuse, and had a machine shop weld it up. Truck is still going, that was in 05 or 06 I think.
  18. Just like Keith said, a person needs a bit (or a lot) of personal integrity and values to work on flat rate. The opportunity is always there to lye, cheat and steal to make more money. I have seen enough people go through our shop to come to realize, these people usually burry themselves eventually....
  19. Its tough Kelly. We have a guy in our shop that has been here for 6 months ish. He just got switched to straight flat as of July1st. It is already getting to him. You can tell he is super stressed about turning his hours, and has completely blown up twice last week, over things directly related to hours and who jobs are given to. I cant see it lasting too long. I have been straight flat rate since I started here 10 years ago. There are times that it gets to me and I get stressed, but there are other times where it pays off. I busted my ass today and did a head on a 2008 f-150 4.6 in 6 hours. Cant see myself going that hard for an hourly wage. I try to see the big picture, as long as the monthly and or yearly income is OK, I try to not stress about every job, or hour. We are also a small shop (2 techs, 1 apprentice), not sure if that makes it better or worse, I have never worked anywhere with more than 4 guys in the shop.
  20. Yep those sure look like mine, although mine are blue.
  21. Have a 2014 ecoboost f-150 with a horrendous lower end knock. 74,000km on the odo, last oil change was at 14,000km. I will post picks of inside the oil filter when I get them home. Told the customer no warrantee due to lack of maintenance. He said I change the oil at work, but have no paperwork to prove it. (It has a motorcraft filter on it, and the oil looks like it has 60 k on it) He is going to buy a used engine online apparently. This should be good.
  22. Pulled it out of the ditch with the tow chain hooked to the trac bar? I cant count how many E series I have seen with bent sway bar mount brackets because someone pulled them out of the ditch by the sway bar.
  23. Blue Point PR52. 9.5" long, Locking, and replaceable tips. Several different tip styles available as well, although I use them strictly for these clips. I got tired of breaking the tips off my snapon SRPC9000A pliars and having to wait for warranty all the time. Have yet to break the PR52s.
