  1. They almost sent an "engineer" out to look at it...seems like the ambulances are most prone to such reoccurence, like was said with the high RPM,s possibly contributing...glad I asked about it,thanks guys!
  2. We got an '08 ambulance in,running hot,low on coolant, oil way overfull...pulled the water pump and WA-LA,front cover cavitation is evident. 2 times before at 6000 mile intervals this same ambulance was in for identical concern, this makes the 3rd visit, both times before replaced the water pump, front cover, and thermostats as recomended by ...WTF? Any ideas on the repeat cavitation issues this vehicle is experiencing? EGR cooler tests good(w/ hot plate)
  3. Thanks Dwayne, customer is gonna dig that overhead setup...
  4. Removed the piston, rings fell out in pieces...the other 7 cylinders were @ 400psi,the boss wants me to patch it with new piston and a hone job... It might make it better, but I hate half-assing...
  5. Got a regular customer that wants me to install some gauges...he wants EGT,MGP,and trans temp, don't see the need for trans temp 'cause it's a 6-speed manual....also wants green illumination... Any ideas where I can get this stuff fairly quick?
  6. Pulled the engine out the front with the adapter that bolts to the front of the engine, pretty neat setup... Seems by inspection that #8 has grooves on the cylinder wall from a failed piston ring, and of course customer can't afford a long block...don't think a cylinder hone will get the grooves out. Wish I knew how to send pics, got a good camera phone with usb attachment and flash drive
  7. Good deal...thanks guys, cab stays on...last dealer I worked at (9 years)had a sliding chain hoist hanging from cieling,it was awesome for pullin motors, just pop the hood off and bam!....sure do miss that chain hoist...dont miss that dealer,at all,not 1 bit...i think
  8. Just wondering if it would be worth it to raise cab on an '02 F350 for engine problems... This truck got caught in a hail storm in Sturgis,I just got the truck from the body shop,100psi of compression on #8...The truck has a FRESH black paint job,and as careful as I like to think I am,i don't know if the chance should be taken. Never had the cab off an '02, although it does look similiar on initial inspection. Any ideas, what do you think?
  9. A whining noise was noticed in the the parking lot, customer was gonna do a road test, pdi didn't catch it...hmmm code c1237,pulled rear speed sensor, speed ring gear tore up...18 miles
  10. Got an '08 F550 with 18 miles off the lot,the rear axle is busted....3 of 6 carrier bolts are broke, there is metal throughout the system...did a lukewarm line request They instructed me to replace the third member and flush the axle. Anybody seen this? I'd be more than happy to rebuild it(pays more),service manager had me do the hotline thing and whala...$2000 ring and pinion assembly coming from detroit, should be here next week some time...no way i'm getting ALL the metal out of this axle
  11. Absolutely the worse service up-sell ever...wallet sucking for sure...I cant believe they get away with selling that sh#t,it will drop a bird from mid air,and it just does not work! We get some severly clogged ones here, that service doesn't do it,the ONLY way is like Keith says and hot tank/pressure clean(alumi-acid dip),sure it costs more, but it's the right way... On a side note, what's it worth to pull the intake for the cleaning? We charge 6 hours, just curious if it's not enough or 2 much...can have it off in an hour or so usually, but going together always takes longer...
  12. Wow,that's good stuff Kieth... I was in Charlotte one morning on the way to a Ford class,I watched a lady in a mini-van reading a newspaper AND eating a bowl of cereal on I-85,a fast moving 8-lane highway!...
  13. I got an 08 ambulance in yesterday, running hot, drained 32 qts (2 FULL drain pans) from oil pan,and get this, dripping water from drain hole, coolant level dropping at the same time.Pulled the water pump, the front cover is ate away on the bottom right side of the circled housing. This is the 3rd repair of the same symptom, coolant in the oil and overheating...front covers porous on all 3. Ordered a front cover,my boss comes over and says I need to remove both EGR coolers and test for faulty cooler...now my only problem with that is from what I've seen alot of coolers wont leak unless they're heated,am I right? I absolutely hate a damn 6.4,what a piece of shit...
  14. OK,I've been all over this truck trying to find cause and even pulled the injectors I replaced out again to inspect, all looks good.Customer says he gets 14-17 mpg,and I believe him...says after repair was done he now has it calculated to 5 mpg, showed me receipts of all the fuel stops he made from florida to SC,$420.00 worth.WOW...I did reprogram the FICM,surely that didn't cause this, but who knows? Putting it back together, then I plan to run a fuel economy test, since it's available...thanks for all the input guys, this has got me
  15. Anyone got any ideas for fuel mileage concern on an 03 F350?... I installed 3 much need injectors on this truck last week, runs like a scalded dog now,but customer went to Florida and says he was averaging only 5 mpg.Not a happy camper,he makes the same run to Florida 3 times or more a month transporting boats...he keeps up with the fuel mileage,he also maintains his truck very well. The truck has 156,000 miles. Thanks for any help or advise...
  16. So I think the answer is,the passenger side has really low or way too high of fuel pressure, maybe even a broke or missing copper washer or combustion leak inside injector, and the driver side is cutting fuel...what about an oil leak on that side?(1,3,5,7) Seen that balance scenario a few times, almost always fuel pressure being low... So Bruce, what is the politically correct answer by the way?... Brad, thanks alot for the step by step on that,it is much appreciated..
  17. Just an update...was able to get the rollpin out (in 3 pieces),what an S.O.B...had major trouble with the other rollpin that goes in and out the same way, nobody's seen the tool, sure would've saved alot time and cussing... Feel like a dumbass for even starting this post, but I don't wish this repair on any one, cant wait to see what it pays...
  18. Ok,it has been confirmed the roll pin is broken, allowing the shaft to freespin,no engagement. Now i got one piece out, still got a small piece of pin jammed in between the collar and shaft, not wanting to come out... DO NOT DISSASSEMBLE-CALIBRATED UNIT is stamped on a bracket that attaches the notched bracket on the shaft, can i take it apart,or should I dare, don't want to screw anything up,anyone got advice?
  19. I give you guys that fix trannys big kudo's,don't know how yall do it. I'm on my second dealer in 12 years, always had a tranny guru or 2 foaming at the mouth for a good tear down and rebuild...until recently,i would only R & I,sometimes more than once on the same trans. Here lately I've been getting my feet wet, lots of stuff going on in there...Hoping I'll learn something on WBT,surely could'nt hurt.
  20. Got an 08 torqueshift that wont go into gear, lever moves, but no clicks are felt, feels like something is broken. Dropped the trans pan to get a better look-see,lever is turning, but the slotted bracket isnt moving... Thinking I need the manual control lever shaft and seal, maybe a TR sensor,we dont see many(if any) torqueshift problems. Was wondering if there have been any issues with detent lever retaining pins breaking, the shaft is turning inside the pin collar, dont think thats proper operation...Thanks
  21. Yeah Bruce,10 gauge, thanks again for your help. What you do for this website is great, really appreciated...the truck hasn't skipped a beat since it left, the owner has my service managers cell #,so if it does act up,I'll definetly hear about it,it's one of them deals... Turned out to be a simple loose connector issue that I should've caught on the preliminary inspection...another lesson learned,I guess. It was so close to being towed to an Allison dealer...the harness is routed really tight on these, not much give, betting this kinda thing happens alot, although I probably wont see another F750 for 6 months or more, its mostly F250 -550's here...gotta love it
  22. Somewhat good news here...went over the harness again,ck'd for corrosion,ect....found 2 wire connector just below bell housing backed off a bit, secured connectors with tie straps and wa-la,the bitch fired right up! Explained to the customer what i did word for word,he fixes diesels everyday, just a different variety,he's happy,i just hope it gives him no more problems.I hate to let a truck go without absolutely knowing the cause for the concern, but when it comes to something like this, what can you do? I jokingly gave him the lightpole warranty...
  23. Thanks Bruce...wanted to mention that we do not have allison doc,not even sure if we have the data connector to check for codes, there's a ford dlc and a round one under the dash, couldnt tell ya which i'm supposed to hook up to for trans codes recieved. Was wrong about it stalling,i asked the driver, said he pulled over when it changes gears abruptly, the stop engine engine&check trans lights came on,also noticed the cat eyes on selector display,he turned it off and a no crank after that. It's got a cummins engine, allison trans, neither of which do i ever work on...so i gotta bite the bullet on this one...gonna check the harness again, maybe something will jump out at me.
  24. Good morning, was wondering if i could get some direction... Got an 07 F750 no crank, the (allison) push button gear selector is showing cat eyes, which i gather is a communication problem.I've checked the fuses at the batteries, and the harness that runs below the bell housing looks ok. I've got it narrowed down to either the push button selctor or trans module, but as you've probably already guessed, this is NOT my forte'...the truck is used for heavy equipment repair,so yes, they are wanting it fixed yesterday. I was hoping there may be some allison experts that could help.Guy said he was drving down the road, truck jumped gears, stalled, and hasn't started since.I can start it only by jumping the starter,so I'm sure it's a trans issue, limited resources (and training) on this...any help would be awesome, the experience should do me good.
  25. Well Larry,I did get another code for the right front, wanna say it was for input ckt, after the left front was replaced the ABS light hasnt been on since...still waiting on him to bring it back, hope he doesnt have any issues(like a wreck).I learned a valuable lesson on this one, rest assured...
