  1. i couldn't verify a leak out of that hole so i'm just going to put a headgasket on it. however, just in case i cut a bolt flush and threw it in there with some thread sealant. i've had the dashes out of these things before so i already found out about the splined steering shaft
  2. no TSBs for an 06 f-250. that makes me feel good oh no! my 6.0L cranks but won't start. apparently i need to check fuel pressure, timing drive components and spark
  3. any particular reason these things appear to be dipped in gloss black paint? hide any oil leaks?
  4. yeah, they're going out like crazy. of course the last one i did was a dual alt so we didn't have the belt in stock
  5. now this is one you want to double and triple check. 3.0L 4V leaking oil around the area of the right rear cyl head. pretty good leak, underside is soaked and oil is burning on the exhaust. once the surface was cleaned up and the oil was dyed it only took a minute for a noticable trace to appear in this area. it was clearly not coming from the corner of the head gasket but there is an SSM (20590) that applies. it states that "machining chips" could have gotten stuck between the gasket and head/block surface resulting in an oil leak. i don't think this is the case. the leak is about 1" lower than the gasket surface. so i put a hotline in asking about any galley plugs behind the trans that could be leaking. hotline suggested applying 3-5psi of air pressure to the oil system and spray soapy water onto the suspected area. i did so and nothing appeared at the gasket corner. so today i pulled the trans and this is what i found that hole would contain a locating dowel for another trans application. in this vehicle it's covered by the aisin seperator plate. so i replied back to hotline stating what i found this is what hotline replied back to me, Matthew, It would be very rare for oil to be leaking from this hole since there is no oil near this part of the block. Hotline reports support the most likey cause of this concern is the head gasket leaking. It is recommended to remove the cylinder head and inspect the surfaces. If ok replace the head gasket and bolts. i'm going to TRIPLE check this leak on monday. i didn't get a chance to apply air pressure and make absolute sure this is where it's coming from. if it really is the head gasket it's masked itself perfectly. unreal
  6. well that escape has been gone since that last post so i hope it's okay for a while. ended up putting a tstat in it before it left. ECTs were a little too hot for my liking now i have another one to play with. 08 milan 3.0L 26k this one is leaking oil around the right rear corner of the bank 1 cyl head. the kicker is i dyed the oil and i can't see any coming from the gasket area (ssm). it's right below and appears to be coming from behind the bell housing. either way i need to pull the trans tomorrow.
  7. guys, thanks for the advice, they're still pushing hard but i turned the job down today, i made it very clear i'm looking for a truck shop and it didn't feel right. i know they need a tranny tech and they have one position open. i told them i'm not their guy. i looked around the shop yesterday and there wasn't a truck in sight, nothing out side either. my shop is 1/3 the size but last week i had one superduty every day they know they're not a truck shop but they still didn't want to hear no. i've been in this situation before. the only reason i have auto trans certs is because my current employer insisted i get certified and assured me i wouldn't have to actually do anything. yeah right, it didn't take long to go from nothing to lead tranny tech Jim, i'm senior master 10 and 11 plus diesel certified. thanks again for the insight.
  8. i haven't been in this business very long and i've never had to quit, leave or anything like that but i'm entertaining the thought of leaving my current shop. would you be worried about a future employer trying to rush you into a new position? i had an interview tonight with a dealership i haven't heard too much about and they acted like they needed an answer tomorrow if i wanted the position. this worries me, there's some potential turmoil in the area with dealerships closing up i don't quite understand their motive. i felt like i was being sold a job, is that usually the norm?? i'm worried about an alterior motive because shouldn't i be trying to sell myself? i'm young and i have a feeling they're trying to play on my inexperience changing jobs btw they had an add in the paper for a tranny tech, now i tried to get across that i don't want to do trans work anymore and i'm looking to get further into diesel. i need to feel them out more tomorrow for sure
  9. remember, someone gets a paycheck for designing these tools
  10. pulled one out with the new style puller today. worked good but this truck only had 38k and the valve wasn't that gaulded in there had one problem with the nut backing out but i loctited it on the rod and it stayed. the old puller has the end stripped out so i'm gonna tack a nut on there for a back up
  11. did the stc in my truck finally. it was definitely on its way out. had a lot of in and out movement and you could see the wear mark forming. truck has 54k on it now my oil cooler screen was tore up too and the ipr screen had a few small pieces of crap on it. damn 6.0s maybe i can sleep at night now knowing my truck is better off than it was before........err or not
  12. made one today after work. took a piece of 1/2" square 1 inch long and set it in the tensioner on my truck. used bar stock 24" long, 1 1/4" wide and 1/4" thick. kinda lined it up and eyeballed where i needed to be. checked it out after i tacked it, worked perfect. ran a bead all the way around and it couldn't be better I have enough material to make a few more. one for work and one to keep in the truck maybe one for the other diesel guy we have
  13. well it's official...... i'm going to make one of these. bought a couple pieces of weld steel from tractor supply tonight. retail it's about $5 in metal.
  14. ever since i bought a mig learning how to weld has peaked my interest, it's not that i don't like working on vehicles but I like being able fabricate when necessary(that should be the least of my concerns in a dealership). i've made more than a few tools and fixed a lot of exhaust problems I'm thinking of taking a semester of welding at my local community college, not to change careers but to expand my skill level. I'm wondering how taking a night class will affect my work during the day, though.
  15. I wouldn't know what to do since it's at the bottom of the hole. i've pulled 2 broken taps out with my MIG so far but they've both been at the surface and both brought the stud out with it. i wish i had a plasma
  16. heads were out about .004 between the cyls. block was less than .002 all in spec but sent them out to be safe machine shop took .006 off the heads today and pulled my studs out. i'll have them back tomorrow and hopefully it'll be done and out of here
  17. i shoot a lot, do a little varmint hunting and benchrest shooting. I hand load all my own ammo. this is my pride and joy savage model 12 VLP .22-250 8 twist. shilen match barrel, .252 neck, chamber set at minimum headspace. HS precision PSV 118 stock, sharp shooter trigger and a cnc recoil lug. put it together myself. definitely capable of taking varmints at 500yds my working close range varmint rifle is a rem 700sps .17 fireball with a hs sporter stock and a jewell HVR trigger set at a crisp 1lb. this one has killed a lot of vermen i also bass fish a lot in the summer but that's a story for another day. I used to be into cars too until i made it a living
  18. didn't check them yet. pulled the heads, put my shit away and left. i'll look tomorrow
  19. cust authorized teardown and didn't take the recommendation of a long block so that's what i did all day today..... the head gaskets are toast on the right bank and starting to go on the left. i did the same thing as doing a 3.5L phaser job. set the whole powertrain on the floor. got a couple busted exhaust manifold studs on this one too. atleast i've got the heads sitting on the bench and a mig at my disposal
