IDS VCM2 on a Test PCM
Matt Saunoras replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have been kicking around an idea of remote programming FICMs this way. I believe I have all the parts and wiring info needed, the only thing I need now is the time to put it all together. -
Got 2 right now. 6.0 missing on 7 and popping through the intake. The motor sounds like it's ready to come apart, major metal in the oil. Been waiting days on what we're doing with it. Other bay is a 6.4 with premium care. EGR codes and low compression on cyl #8 Never done a ESP diesel claim. I'm not sure how to handle this one. Bare block?

Rebuilding A 6.0L VG Turbocharger
Matt Saunoras replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
The truck left today sporting a self reconditioned turbo and a new international halfshell. Total parts department sales? ZERO :DI put 45 miles on the truck since yesterday. All is well for now -
PCM Reprogramming Changes?

I've noticed some 6.4s do the TCM and others don't. Same with the 6.7 and the NOx, GPCM and TCM -
Rebuilding A 6.0L VG Turbocharger
Matt Saunoras replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Well my glass case turbo is now residing in a 05 F-550 dump belonging to one of our best fleet customers. Put about 20 miles on it so far, all is well as of now. I'll know more tomorrow when I get to drive it in the light of day (smoke). Pretty recently I was wondering what exactly I was going to do with this turbo. I really had no use for it, hopefully it stays together for a while -
Knock knock. Who's there?
Matt Saunoras replied to JSHTech's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Both headgaskets were on backorder when I did a shortblock in the middle of last year. We sourced 2 headgaskets from dealers around the country. -
I'm playing find the fucked up wire on a 07 450 6.0 flood truck. Multiple TFT and TR codes edit - Found it, where the harness runs along the cross member, one wire broken inside the insulation.

With the heads flipped over on the bench you can see the cracks in the valves if you look very close. I'm not sure when exactly they fixed this issue but the ones I've seen were early 2011s basically all the trucks affected by the long block TSB need checked. -
Call me crazy but the turbo feed lines leave a little to be desired on these 6.4s. I've been making a habit of drilling the banjo bolt holes out one size bigger. I have in the past found crap clogging up these holes. These bolts were no exception. 1st pic is the high side compressor outlet, nothing was coming from the low side turbo on this one 2nd pic is a bolt I drilled with a 9/64" bit. Stock holes are 1/8"

Well here is the end of this story. And the new story of how I got a lariat chrome package grille. For some reason the body guy we use at the shop does not order parts off of us. He can get a better deal at a competing dealer (go figure ). So my truck was in the shop for 3 days and the guy stops down to tell me the dealer ordered the wrong grille but it was the parts guys fuck up and they'll give him the lariat grille for the price of the regular one. I said go ahead and put it on and I'll see if I like it or not. So far I think it's a keeper.

I'm still trying to get used to my 2. I picked the F-550 bucket truck last week about 6 inches off the ground just to put a starter in it but I still am hesitant to go high up. I'm so used to working on the ground it's going to be hard to break that habit. Yesterday I worked a little while on the F-550 rollback I'm doing turbos and manifolds in. Got 2 studs busted off below flush, one on each side. I'll work on those tomorrow. The high turbo is screwed but the low for some reason has too much axial endplay even though it's not leaking. These damn 6.4s just seem to eat up so much time but I've had a cold all last week and I'm basically running in slow motion. Hopefully I can get in high gear tomorrow.

Very nice. I wish I had room like that and no one to share it with.

Well I am going to have an answer for you guys because I just "fixed" an 03 no-start with an 04 high pressure pump. Long story short I diaged a truck for a towing company in their garage after hours. 03 no start, sawtooth ICP. Owner says wait there's a high pressure pump around here somewhere, let me find it. I said, yeah smallish box, should have a 3C3Z part number. He says okay btw if you want the job it's yours. After some digging around we find a pump, pull it out, everything is there. I'm in autopilot so I throw it in. Truck starts right up, running like a top. Shut it down. Gather up my shit to leave for the night, grab the box to toss the core in and there it is, the label. 4C3Z-9A543-AARM I'm thinking you have got to be kidding me.
-
HA I found that in the coffee table book. So what happens when you put an 04 pump into an 03?
-
Anyone know the differences between 3C3Z-9A543-AARM and 4C3Z-9A543-AARM? Obviously one is for the straight rail 03 and the other fits the wavy rail 04. Possibly different pressure output?

Got a 6.4 18' rollback in this new building they call a shop. I am almost butted nose in against the damn wall to keep the rear from hanging out in the middle of the shop. Of course it needs turbos and exhaust manifolds and I can't pull the cab. GRRRR Also got an 03 6.0 bucket truck that needs a set of injectors and a y-pipe. For a side dish I've got another 03 6.0 I'm putting in a hpop in my buddies garage. Textbook no-start sawtooth ICP. The guy at the ambulance garage called me today. The one that needs headgaskets is now a no-start hot. Oh well. Fix it or don't.

I was also told about the bearing failures by hotline. The last one I did that was totally locked up I inquired to them about a causal part. They replied back that main bearing failure would be sufficient to get the claim paid. It was Make sure what ever you do if that's an early 11 and you're reusing the heads that you check the exhaust valves very carefully. Clean them up and look for cracks. The one I shortblocked got 16 new exhaust valves because 1/3 of the originals had visible hairline cracks. -

Right angle grease gun adapter?
Matt Saunoras replied to Matt Saunoras's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
That handled adapter would work well! Having an adapter similar to that on a whip hose was very difficult to get engaged on the fitting -

This is the closest thing I found to what I was actually looking for. I purchased one and I'll try it on the next truck for sure. It will pivot from straight to 90° and anywhere in between. Feels like a nice solid piece hopefully it works and lasts a while. http://www.amazon.com/Plews-05-050-Degree-Swivel-Coupler/dp/B000GKU0D6/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1L3CQ37JES30 -
There's a post on FMC message boards about this. I already had an independent guy I do side work for asking me about green gasket plugging up an IPR valve. Guess what it was, Dorman oil cooler.

Too late, I'm married to the whole fleet. They're not fixing it right now so I don't know what's going to happen. Today I black boxed a 4R70 in an 06 F-150. Really I could live without ever having to do another one of those.

06 E-350 ambulance. It's been blowing coolant out the degas and coming back for coolant leaks for a while now. Finally it's got so much air in the cooling system it won't consistantly blow heat and they need to address it. This pig has 280k miles on it. I'm at a loss of what exactly to quote without over repairing the hell out of it. I already want to quote 2 new heads just to cover my ass and I'm thinking about 16 new lifters too. I need to address an oil leak at the bellhousing but I really don't want to go as far as bedplate gaskets. If I get a look at those main bearings I'm probably not going to sleep for a week. The thing runs good, I've already done a front cover, water pump, oil cooler, injectors, and other minor repairs over the last year.

My truck is running quite well on the motorcraft anti-gel and performance improver. I might keep running this stuff and save the stanadyne performance for the summer.

I've never seen so many gelled up trucks in my life. It was non stop all day. Between people calling me and talking to customers it was nearly impossible to get anything done other than thaw them out. I left a 6.0 ambulance outside last night by accident and that thing was not a happy camper. Keith wind chill does not affect anything but your skin. Once some inanimate object has reached ambient temp it cannot go any lower. I think our fuel is simply not blended for sub-zero temps like it is further north. My truck did not gel up this morning to the point of causing a problem but I did notice a lack of power during some hill climbs. The other guy I work with had his fuel gelled up this morning and wound up being an hour and a half late. He had cetane boost in his fuel but he doesn't run it all the time. PM-22-A does not say anything on the bottle about cold weather.
