In my 6.7 course, we were also told the turbo will thermal siphon.

Currently, we are so backed up at work, that we have untouched diesel orders stemming back to August (we are actually re-writing some ROs to not break the 60 day rule). Naturally, there are a lot of people complaining to Ford customer service about our turn around time. We explained that we are having an issue with staffing, and with record rates of 6.7s coming in for engine replacements, things are backing up. Ford seems to think the solution is as simple as hiring more diesel technicians! Around here, diesel technicians are dropping like flies... Some retiring, and others taking the high road to work on fleets... And with how difficult some jobs are becoming, and how poorly they are paying, and how crappy (some) dealership benefits and hourly rates are, can anybody blame them? And, according to a to remain unnamed source, the issue is at the dealer level, nothing to do with the mothership. If we can't hire techs, then we are supposed to train the staff we already have, so they can "legally" do diesel work. Problem is, nobody wants to leave the comfort of powersteering flushes and brake services to replace 6.7s for 18 hours... So, the solution then again becomes HIRE MORE DIESEL TECHNICIANS! Rant over. Thanks for reading.

The other day, I had a customer come in to the shop with a list of fines he recieved from one of our Provincial Motor Carrier Enforcement officers. The fines issued ranged between $65 and $500, for items such as horn inoperative, incomplete daily inspections, parking brake not holding, a bad tire, and the list goes on. All these fines stemmed from a roadside inspection that he was awarded by said officer who initially pulled him over because he was smoking inside the vehicle (smoking in a work vehicle is a no-no in Ontario), and he decided to lip off to said officer in the mean time, warranting the book being thrown at him... The inspection ended up in over $3000 worth of fines between the driver and the employer, including $305 to the driver for the cigarette and the employer got fined $670 for not letting him know it's illegal... Followed by another $940 for me to replace his clockspring, adjust the parking brake and replace one tire and he's ready to roll! I don't know if there's a moral to this story... I just thought I'd share it. Don't smoke and drive!

VT only makes about 20 or 21 psi of boost... Way less stressful on the the headbolts. Most people that drive medium duty trucks, use them for work... Unlike alot of pick-up drivers that drive them because they want to get to the grocery store faster and with more smoke than his neighbor with a Duramax.

Although we are a Cummins certified dealership, we still refer most of our work to Cummins of Eastern Canada. Cummins is a huge pain to deal with, and if you think Ford warranty times are bad, you ain't see nuthin'! I believe they only pay us in the area of $70 per hour for warranty. We also see tonnes of issues with work we send to Cummins. If you send something there with a concern, a few days later you'll get a call saying it's finished, and the bill is $3000... No call for authorization. Nothing. Total pain, and not worth it.

Hopefully everybody's hourly wages are commensurate with their diagnostic skills!

03 V10.. Idle and fuel trim questions
Alex Bruene replied to Buddy_M's topic in All Gasoline Engines
Dirty MAF sensor? PCV tube? -
I'd be concerned about the 5% drop in relative compression on cylinder #2, considering which cylinders are typically at fault when 6.4s fail. I wouldn't spend too much of the customer's money on a starting problem, because dollars to donuts it's going to need an engine in the not so distant future. Perhaps a manual compression test would be a good idea.

They've corrected that issue. Doesn't anybody notice how oily new turbos are out of the box compared to 5 years ago?
-
I don't think I've had an issue with a new or reman turbo in several years. There was a time that they would seize if left on the shelf too long, but that was a really long time ago.

I have seen it many times that the location listed in the job aid doesn't match the sensor PID. I always will unplug the suspect sensor while monitoring all 4 EGT pids to see if any (other) EGT sensor readings change prior to removing the sensor.

I've only ever seen that when people use the steering wheel to pull themselves in to the truck.

The engine protection strategy is in place for a reason. 6.4 fuel systems don't like water.

12-11-11 18.3 hours.........c'mon!
Alex Bruene replied to vloney's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I think replacing the long block should pay 18.3 plus cab removal and diagnosis. There is a lot of work to do. I would say I have close to 30 hours punch time on this one... Keeping in mind, it is my first one, but I don't think I can match 18.3 on my 20th one. -

Alex Bruene replied to vloney's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I'm replacing my first 6.7 right now. I've got way more than 18.3 in to it, and I'm just about to lower the cab. Thankfully, mine didn't fall in to that TSB. -
I highly doubt that!

I recently called IH to price a FICM for a friend. Their FICM was more expensive than ours. Is it a Canada thing?

We don't need a diesel. We have the Eco-Boost!

Are you sure you didn't mean "totally partial"?

I've seen that video. I'd bet my left testy that I can replace a 7.3 oil pan quicker than they can perfrom the abortion!
-
I've seen lots of packers modified by "Haul-All" that had been modified to drive from either side with shifters like that.
-
I've done so many of those, I can drill out the lock bar with my eyes closed and have the cylinder out in minutes.

2006 6.0L Extended Cranking During Cold Soak
Alex Bruene replied to mchan68's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Port plugs will cause that. As the engine soaks, the manifold drains completely, then it takes some cranking to fill the manifold back up. Port plugs don't always cause a no-start hot scenario, but will eventually as the leak gets worse. -
Not really... I did just have a child 3 weeks ago... But I don't think a 119 month gestation sounds right.
