  1. Anyone ever watch the movie Killdozer? Could be combines running amok next.
  2. I was told once not to use silicone based lubricants on fuel systems because it will not dissolve in fuel, and if used on a gas engine it could potentially contaminate oxygen sensors. Have not verified either claim, but I don't want to find out.
  3. The converter is taped into the harness near the sender. It is just a small box 1 inch square and maybe 1/4 inch thick or so. I agree it should not have one but we had one here that we fought with the gas gauge for a while, so I opened the harness looking for wiring problems and found the converter. You will see the harness has a fat spot if it has a converter in it.
  4. If this is a flex fuel vehicle it may have a dc/ac converter in series with the fuel gauge sender. There is a 12v power supply wire going to the converter that likes to get corrosion in the wire, the voltage drops and the gauge drops out. The converter is in the harness near the sender. Since this truck is a 2005 it should not have it, but I have seen stranger things. It may be worth taking a look.
  5. Just a heads up, I have seen several quick struts with the dished washers for the mount on the strut shaft upside down out of the box. Don't recall who the supplier was.
  6. Had to go to Canadian Tire to remove some locking wheel nuts that they lost the key for. Would you let these guys work on your car?
  7. I have had to disconnect the ambient temp sensor in the mirror and install a 9.8k ohm resistor in it's place. This tells the PCM it is about 25deg C. Then leave it in overnight, and do the drive cycle as soon as you drive it out. Last time I had to do this it was -30, so I had to be quick with the drive cycle. The def heater does not work if the pcm is thinking it is 25deg, and if you are not quick enough the def will freeze in the line before you complete the drive cycle.
  8. Look for trans fluid in the modulator line. I have also seen vehicles where the modulator pin was missing. I guess they fell out when someone changed the valve. I can't remember what they did when that happened, it has been a while.....
  9. Used to change just the relay quite often for either glow plugs not working or staying on.
  10. Lots of purge valves. Also, if they leak vacuum with the engine running they can set a code for small leak while testing for vapor generation with the engine off.
  11. We replaced one as well for the bearing type noise. There is a shaft inside the the trans that drives the oil pump. It doesn't have bearings supporting it so eventually it saws through the case. Not serviced separately.
  12. Even if the air cleaner lid is left loose on a 6.2 you can really hear the boggy honk noise on tip in, sometimes accompanied with a MIL for various MAF codes. Lots of trucks show up here from quick lube places with the air cleaners installed incorrectly or left loose. I can only imagine the noise it makes with an AIRRAID filter installed.
  13. I can't explain how, but I have had them come In with p0016 and boost codes. If the wastegates are not seized, the chain usually fixes them. They will also set rich mixture bank 1 codes with a stretched chain. If I have unexplained mixture or boost codes without p0016, we pull the bank 1 valve cover to inspect the tensioner protrusion. Monitoring the cam timing PIDS does not seem to always be an accurate way of determining the state of the chain and 0016 may not be present.
  14. Watch the 5th gear blocker ring, with skip shift they like to wear out.
  15. They run quite well with the cam one tooth off. I have seen them with the trigger wheel on backwards, they run but poorly with no power. I have also seen them with the crank bolt loose so the trigger wheel can move on the crank. They will run but do weird things like set misfire codes for no reason.
  16. If someone has replaced the phasers previously bank 2 is probably out by one tooth. Put #1 on tdc exhaust, and check the position of the center finger in the group of three fingers on the phaser. It should be just before the center of the sensor. If you turn the crank 1 turn you can check the position of the bank 1 phaser and see how it compares.
  17. Do you US guys not have the cost cap tool?
  18. Hey Mutter, just thinking outside the box here, is there any chance the sensor wiring could be mixed up so EOT and ECT are reversed? I have a hard time believing that the oil could be that hot with that low of a coolant temp . It is winter after all.
  19. With all of the deleting going on, how much does a diesel owner really care about emission testing?
  20. I have seen 7.3 with the oil pump pickup screen plugged with silicone lose LP oil pressure then lose power on hard accell. It appears that under load the HP system would demand more oil than the plugged screen would allow through. Has this unit had an oil pan replaced?
  21. I keep a working vcm1 for use on older vehicles. If you get the message that vcm2 was not tested with this vehicle, certain functions may not work (old navigator air suspension, for example). It is still functioning after 94 was installed.
  22. My King O Matic catalog shows one, part number 16642a. Google the part number, see what comes up.
  23. Google 36445eak, that is the pigtail.
  24. When I was a young mechanic, an old mechanic told me "If you can't fix it, at least make it look good"
