  1. Very common. I have replaced many 4.6, 5.4, 6.8 manifolds. The manifold is probably warped and needs to be replaced too. Like Jeff said, the stud usally comes out with a stud extractor or vice grips after the manifold is out. I have had to drill quite a few out too. Not the worst thing in the world.
  2. If you don't have 1 shorted injector that is shutting off the whole side, you probably have a bad IDM. You still need to follow the pinpoint test though. Assuming it is a bad IDM, when you replace it you will need to self test the PCM and clear the DTCs or the engine will still oly run on 4 cylinders. I had a 96 Econoline doing the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. I too had a bad IDM. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif
  3. I'm currently right in the middle of a STC fitting job and I'm also replacing a couple D rings too. The vehicle came in yesterday when the TSB came out. Will Ford bounce the claim if I put the old STC fitting in the truck? Are parts avail. yet?
  4. Although it isn't my style to "guess and not test", and without actually being able to diag this truck, I'm going to guess at a sticking turbo.
  5. Tony, What do you think the problem is with this truck? Do you really hink its bucking and jerking because its not getting enough egr flow? I hope you don't take this the wrong way, because I really think your a good tech, but how come all of your friends take thier trucks to other dealers to get them fixed?
  6. That is what is so great about this site. It's great when there is a truck in the shop doing one of these "wierd things". I'm glad the truck it fixed. ICP taking out fuel injectors... I would have never thought of that. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
  7. It did come with new bolts.
  8. Yeah, that was the right one.
  9. Tony, Just pull the chip out to see if the problem goes away.
  10. I had that problem with the peeling skin, for during the first summer that I was a "clean hand tech". I think my body adapted and I don't have that problem anymore.
  11. Yeah, not the first time I heard of a chip causing a stalling concern.
  12. Hey Tony, I had one a few years ago that would stall intermitently. It turned out to be the actual chip that the customer installed. There must have been a loose connection inside the chip. I coulg get it to stall by pulling the pcm down and tapping the pcm. I removed the chip and it was fine. I can't remember what dtc I got, but it led to a pcm or a idm. Good luck.
  13. I'm having a hard time getting a crank pulley for a 2005 Excursion 6.0L. My parts dept keeps getting me the pulley for the belt for dual alternator that bolts to the crank pulley. They looked it up agian and told me I need a 3c3z 6312 ca instead od the 3c3z 6312 aa. Can someone verify this for me?
  14. I diagnosed my coffee machine before I called them to get it replaced under warranty. Didn't mean to hijack the thread.
  15. Your sure this is fuel and not coolant? I don't mean to doubt you, but how would fuel get into the intake? I mean if there is unburnt fuel could it really go through the egr cooler and pass the unplugged egr valve? Do you have aerated fuel? That will cause white smoke and random misfiring. I don't think anyone has mentioned that yet. I got some clear hose and put some in the return line and the supply line and watched it while the truck was running on the one I had with aerated fuel. If it turns out that a fuzzy crank signal is causing your problem, there have been some guys here that have seen rust build up beetween the sensor and the block. Kind of like when rust would build up under a abs wheel speed sensor. Here is something else I was thinking about. This guy had gas in the fuel system and it caused the injectors to fail. You replaced the injectors, but the fuel still has gas in it. 300 miles later the new injectors have been damaged by the gasoline. I know that on a 7.3l with bad injectors, if you open the drain valve with the engine running, the idle will smooth out because there is less fuel pressure on the internal components. I have never tried this on a 6.0l, but what do you have to lose. Maybe unplug the fuel pump with the engine running and see what happens. Remember, your going to find the problem to this truck and it will get fixed.
  16. You know your in some serious trouble when the glove is actually cut or torn. The gloves are nice for retaining all the parts when you smash your hand.
  17. I wish I tried that a week ago. I thought about buying that kit but never did. I just got done removing and re-installing all 8 injectors in a F250 with the cab on. I didn't use anything special and it wasn't that hard.
  18. Is it a DI or a IDI? When you open a the fuel system in a IDI, you can be cranking the engine for a long tome before it will start. I'm not sure if this will happen on a older DI with a mechanical pump, but you can unplug the fuel pump on a newer 7.3 with a electric pump and the engine will still run. It will actually run pretty good for not having fuel pressure. The fuel injectors have a way of drawing the fuel. The problem happens when you open the fuel system. Then the engine won't start. Just a thought. Maybe the tandem pump is shot?
  19. I did one on a Econoline a long time ago. I want to say about 7-7.5 not incliuding diag.
  20. I used to have some really tough looking hands and I was proud of them. Then I wore gloves for 2 weeks before my wedding. This was actually a compormise, because my wife-to-be wanted me to get a manicure. Then when I found out I was going to be a father I decided on my own that I don't want to handle a baby with dirty looking hands. I have worn latex gloves for everything I do at work ever since. I have heavier gloves I use over my latex gloves when I'm donig fromt end work, droping a engine in, or some seroius hammering. My hands are very clean, but they still get cut, burned and bruised. The gloves protect my skin from chemicals, grease and filth but not from cuts and scrapes. Nobody ever guesses that I'm a mechanic. People usally think I'm a car salesman when they find out where I work. I have never filled out paperwork for a cut, scrape or any other injury at work. I have gone up to my manager and showed him a battle wound just to let him know in case I decided to get it taken care of after work. I don't think gloves should be mandatory. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif
  21. Anyone that is a tech and uses the term "Brain-Box" is a idiot. Just my two cents. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif
  22. It's April Fools day again. For me that means that it is my anniversary of being a professional tech. I started in the business on April 1st, 1993. What a good day to start a new career. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/fouet3.gif I'm currently celebrating this important milestone by doing a EGR cooler in a diesel that someone else already replaced the headgaskets in. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
  23. I ran into this problem on a f series. Replaced the whole bank and it was fine. I never really did see any concrete evidence though.
  24. Is there a pid that shows when the PCM is commanding the IWE solinoid? Can you see the 4X4 switch working properly? Thw wire from the PCM to the IWE solinoid isn't grounded is it? It does kind of sound like it could be a PCM. I'm always very hesitant to replace a PCM.
  25. I have fixed a few of these IWE problems. Does the solinoid energize when commanded by the PCM? Does the solinoid work? Does it apply vaccum to the IWE wheel ends? If it does, will the system hold vaccum? I have seen a few vaccum leaks right by the solinoid. A smoke machine can be very helpfull in finding the cracked vaccum line.
