I've had one with the same leak and 1 with a sunshade for the moonroof that lost it's tension. Seems like a good vehicle.

I was at the Detroit training center in 2005 for LCF and was talking to a tech there who had a 6.0L runaway on him. He told me that the fire extinguisher didn't work. It just slowed the engine down for a little bit. He told me that he finally took a hammer and smashed a hole in the intake tube going to the turbo, and took a hose and sprayed water directly into the tube. This guy also told me that the fire department was coming and called for backup before they got to the shop because there was so much smoke and there was also a news helicopter hovering overhead. I have to confess here... A long time ago, when I was still new to this whole diesel thing, but just knowlegable to get cocky I was trying to get a 7.3L started with silicone spray. I ended up using the whole can before I got the truck pushed in. A little while later after I remove the ice cube from the fuel pick-up, I start the thing up. Fired right up and went way past the red line. Can you imagine how I felt when the thing was still screaming when I turned the ignition off? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/surprise.gif It ran for another 3 seconds and then stalled. Those 3 seconds felt like an eternity. I fired it back up and it ran great. No damage. I got VERY lucky. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

That is a great story. Very well written. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/notworthy.gif

We had a 2002 f150 with a 5.4l come in on Friday with a crank no start condition. No crank signal and the crank sensor has been replaced. Long story short... The wiring harness from the crank sensor and the a/c clutch was pinched beetween the bracket that secures the muffler in the high pressure a/c line and the stud on the right side of the engine. I just wanted to share. I'm sure there are others out there like this.

injector damage from fuel restriction
Mekanik replied to jaysonfordtech's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Maybe it is a coincudince, but I have had many F450s come in with a few bad injectors and a plugged fuel pick-up. The place I used to work had a customer with large fleet of stake beds with aft axle tanks. They wouldn't bring the trucks in until they wouldn't run anymore. Most of them would get a new tank with the revised vent, filter, cleaned out fuel lines and a few injectors. Some times the truck would come back in a few days with another injector or 2 that has failed. Now is this because it has been run on low fuel pressure of just because it has150,000 to 300,000 miles on it? Maybe it is a combination of both. -
This cant be just our shop seeing this

Do you have good results with the baloon test? I have tried it a few times without any real concrete evidence. -
That sounds really cool. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

What is ballancing powder and how does it work? I have heard that tire shops aren't balancing big tires with machines anymore and just putting something inside the tire that will balance it.

It will be 15 years for me on April Fools Day as a professional tech. I worked at a couple indy shops and then I got a job at a Lincoln Dealer in May 1993. I felt like I got signed to the Major Leagues. I stayed there for 3.5 years an then moved to a Ford dealer. I started working on diesels on November 1997, and was the only diesel tech for about 5 years. That makes it really hard to learn. I stayed at that dealer for 11 years until I moved to the Ford dealer that I currently work at. I have been here for about 8-9 weeks. Now I work 5 minutes from home and will be riding my bike to work as soon as it gets a little warmer.

Herb is right. It can be 1 injector that is letting combustion gas in the fuel rail, but it can and will ruin the rest of the injectors on that bank. I had one in October with combustion gas and I replaced all 4 injectors on that side (passenger side) . -
Fuel in coolant revisited
Mekanik replied to Alex Bruene's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have not seen one, but the shop I left in November had a 7.3l come in for this right after I left. -

Yes. all of the excursion and f series trucks that I have removed bodies are like this.

Shame on the last dealer that touched this truck

6.0 E-van compression test
Mekanik replied to BillWiebe's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I agree. Most of the econolines I work on are filled with customer installed shelves, crap, heavy tools. I would probably have to empty out the back of these trucks and then remove the plywood and shelves that are screwed to the body. -
Yeah, I did my first one yesterday. The truck was already sitting up in the air in the quick lube area.

I just us a 3/8 ratchet with a semi-deep socket to hold the top of the bolts. I have nerer really had a problem with those flex pipes. Good luck.

6.0 E-van compression test
Mekanik replied to BillWiebe's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
You lifted the body on an ambulance? -
Well here is the update. I had low compression on cylinder #5 when I would first start the truck because it had a bad cam phaser. The first time I cranked the engine over when I was doing the compression test I only had 110psi. and the engine was making a knocking noise. I thought WTF, and then tried it agian... No knocking noise and my compression was now 210 on cyl#5. I actually took the valve cover off and watched the cam phaser. That whole bank had retarded cam timing when this would happen.

I'm working on a 2005 f150 with a 5.4l 3 valve that has dtcs p0022, p0171, p0305, p0316. It seems to run pretty good, but when I did a relative compression test, cyl#5 is 10%low. I don't have a adapter to check compression. I'm borrowing one from a friend tonight. What have you guys seen other than bent rods from leaking injectors? I have seen a couple that had bent rods from a leaking injector that caused the engine to hydrolock. I even saw one that had a bent rod that was hitting the block. I'll probably have a better idea of what is wrong tomorrow. I should also mention that I think it has a noisy camshaft phaser that lasts for about a second or two intermitently after starting. Has anyone ever dealt with the p0022 before? The pinpoint test is basically like" Clear the code and if it dosen't come back then go to Z1. "

I don't replace that many cmps anymore. I'm just thinking of all these trucks coming back into our shops that will also need other work. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif

I guess I would just install the new CMP in the owner's glovebox, if the CMP is blue.

That was great!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/popcorn.gif

What about a plugged fuel filter? I haven't had a bad fuel pump on a 6.0l yet , but I have replaced many injectors on vehicles that loose fuel pressure on accel from plugged filters.
