Mekanik replied to kevin phillips's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Are you sure you have good base oil pressure when cranking? -
Wow /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eeeesh.gif. I had an instructor that had that happen to him and then he developed a seizure disorder.

3C3Z 6049 CARM heads
Mekanik replied to snw blue by you's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I just did a set of heads 2 weeks ago. I can't remember which of the 2 part numbers it was. I think it had the bigger dowels. Oh well /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif -
I'd like to see those pictures. We ordered on of those 15' tire guages today.
-
I hear you guys, but there is no way my boss is going to go for that. All I really need is a couple of those skinny hoses.
-
I'm looking for a few more hoses and some adapters for our guage bar. Any web links on places that sell theese parts? Thanks

I've got 1 today that locks up and acts like it has no assist. It seems to only happen on left turns. It's a 2005.

Away from work, most people would never guess that I'm a diesel tech. I don't talk about work much and when I mention that I work at a car dealership, the usual response is, "Oh, your a car salesman. " I guess that is because I'm clean cut. Most of the people in my neighborhood think that I'm some guy that works at Motorolla or something. I am a very dedicated father and husband. I have 2 daughters and a stay at home wife. Ages 3,5 and 29. Theese three keep me very busy with soccer, ice skating, swimming, tumbling lessons. I like to take them for bike rides to different parks, fishing, I like to read to them at least 3 times a week. My 5 year old is starting to read to me. I love the way they react when I fix one of thier broken toys or sew together one of thier stuffed animals. "Oh Daddy, I'm so glad that your a mechanic!! " My wife was telling me that my oldest was bragging to one of her friends at the bus stop how I'm a mechanic and I can fix anything. As for my self, I run marathons. I run 6-7 days a week and average about 50-60 miles per week. I wake up very early to run and I have found it to be very good therapy. It really helps me with the stress of this job. My hobby really dosen't interfere with my family life because I run before work on the weekdays and when I get home on the weekends my kids are either asleep or have just woken up. I also like to read. I have a long commute and listen to books on cd. This is great I highly reccomend it.

It it dangerous to just "check" the tire pressure without 10 feet of hose? What if I'm changing oil and I check the tire pressure and 1 tire is low? I can't fill it up all the way without the 10 foot hose?

Coolant loss (3 gallons) No visible leaks
Mekanik replied to Mekanik's topic in General Diesel Engines
Well, here is the update. I have coolant in #8 cyl. I'm suspecting a cracked cyl head. Putting a head on this truck makes me very nervous because nobody really knows how many miles are on it. We are getting a used engine for this truck. Thanks for the replies. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/drinkingdude.gif -
Coolant loss (3 gallons) No visible leaks

So, if cavitation was my problem I would have oil in the coolant but, it would not be losing coolant. Right? -

If cavitation was the problem, wouldn't I see coolant in the oil? It looks like regular diesel oil. -
I'm working on a 1990 e350 with a 7.3l idi. I'm not sure how many miles because the customer says that the odometer stopped working a few years ago. They say that there is at least 200,000 miles on the truck. The customer's complaint is that they go through 3 gallons of coolant at a time. It runs pretty good and the customer says that there is no noticable white smoke from the exaust. I can't see any coolant leaks. The engine is pretty much covered in the usual diesel oil seepage. A few weeks ago, I got this truck with the same complaint. I pressure tested the truck overnight and found a leaking upper radiator hose and found oil in the cooling system. I replaced the oil cooler, radiator hoses and the water pump because it was questionable. They have the same problem. I talked the driver. He says that the engine will start to overheat. He checks the coolant level at the radiator and adds a couple gallons of water. Yeah, they've been putting water in this thing. He drove it aprox 50 miles and checked it agian and it was 1 gallon low. He says that his partner was driving behind him this time and smelled coolant. The oil level is full and is not milky. Right now I filled the cooling system and put dye in it too. Any help would be greatly apriceated.

For those who havent yet looked at the post

I can't believe that they wrote this article to sound like this is just a big suprise that every f150 owner will experience. I know we all do it for our own reasons, but Ford does not even endorse removing the cab on this vehicle. The whole "cab off" is a totally seperate debate. If a tech wants to remove the cab to remove a broken spark plug, I respect it but I really don't think it is neccesary. I haven't had to remove a broken plug on a 3 valve 5.4l yet. This article makes it sound that every one of theese things that needs a tune-up will be a 2000.00 ordeal. I'm sure it wouldn't be as bad of a repair if they went to a dealer in the first place. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif -
Ok, I see. That was way before my time. Thanks for clearing that up though.

This is the water drain valve? Everyone I have seen have that metal piece that screws into the bottom of the fuel filter with a "screw-in" type valve.

Good one Jim. Do you work in a onion shop? Just curious.
-
That's pretty cool. I ordered mine today. I think this is only for US dealers though. Sorry fellow Canadians /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif.

Where exactly does it let air in the system? I don't work on many idi's. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crybaby2.gif<<And those are tears of joy because I don't work work in many idi's.

I've seen a few 7.3l's in the 475,000-500,000 mile range. These were some pretty "used and abused" trucks. As far as 6.0l's, Maybe i've seen one with around 125,000. I'm sure there are some high mileage ones out there but I haven't seen any yet.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif It was late in the day, it's hot and humid and I think the diesel fumes may be getting to me. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

What if someone claims to work at an independent shop? I can't believe Bill Ford wanted to be a member. He might actually be fun to chat with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/boxing.gif.

Can a customer get acess to theese forums? I'm just curious. Theese forums arent limited to just techs are they?

Thats what I do when I get a 7.3l with a bad CMP sensor that has stalled and will not start. It was funny to call my boss on his Nextel and tell him to get someone down the street with 2 gallons of cold water.
