  1. We inspect the color of the sensor and the bracket. I think its gray w/silver bracket-OK and black with gold bracket-replace.
  2. It's about time. This will bring in a lot of work. I looked at the vehicles involved in this recall and I noticed that 1998 f-series does not apply. Thats kind of wierd /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
  3. I really don't like dealing with these nitwits. These are the same people that will roll into your dealership, tell you about a drivability problem they're having with their 6.0l powered truck. And then have the nerve to say how they talked to one of their "buddies" who just happens to be a "really great mechanic", and he says it’s the injector pump. If I had a dime for every time I had to inform one of these know-it-alls these trucks haven't had injector pumps for over ten years... Or how about the idiot that tells you to check the points on his vehicle? Do you want me to re-jet your carb too while I'm at it? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
  4. Sounds like an internally leaking hydroboost. I saw this on a Chevy about 6 weeks ago. It looked like the same hydroboost unit we have on Fords.
  5. I don't know if I would do that. I totally agree that 3 bolts will be just fine, but I don't think I would be comfortable doing that. I always think, what if this vehicle ended up at another shop. What would those guys think about this. That would be enough for me to put that 4th bolt on the power steering pump. I used to work with a guy that would replace an exaust manifold in a 3.0l Taurus with only half the bolts. He said he never had a problem. Just going to another shop could be a problem when they tell the customer that his manifold is only being held on by 3 bolts. I have to say that I laugh every time I put a turbo on a 6.0l, and I'm making sure I tightened all the bolts. I mean, except for the 03's they usally come in with only bolt holding it to the engine. NOT THAT I WOULD EVER INSTALL A TURBO WITH ONLY 1 BOLT. No hard feelings Jim. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
  6. They did something goofy to the shrader valve too. Maybe it was leaking and they put that hose on the end to keep the fuel from leaking out. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
  7. Jim, I think you totally misunderstood what I was trying to say. Could 1 bolt hold this cover on without any coolant leaking past that huge o ring? Probably Would an obsessive compulsive person like myself ever do something like that? No way. Even if it saved me a ton of time and I knew it would work, I would not do that.
  8. I think I'm pretty anal about torquing stuff. I never see anyone else using torque wrenches as much as I do. These bolts that hold the cover on the oil cooler... They'll be fine. You could probably just put 1 bolt on and it would probably be ok. I think these bolts will be fine with "just tight" with a 1/4 inch ratchet. Not that I would ever suggest only using 1 bolt to hold this cover down.
  9. I think that most people haven't changed a spare in years. Most people probably couldn't find the spare in their car. I don't live in a desolate area where it is a matter of personal safety to have a spare tire. Everyone has a cell phone now a days and people would rather call a tow truck than get dirty and frustrated changing a spare. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif
  10. "A bottle and a half of Jack. And then a 6 pack at night. You know... to calm the nerves. "
  11. No. I used to go when I lived in Schaumburg. I moved to McHenry 5 years ago and its too far of a drive. Its too bad, because I always picked up a lot of usefull info at those meetings.
  12. Its kind of funny actually. In 2002 when the 6.0l was just coming out and a lot of techs were starting to remove bodies for engine work like cylinder heads and engine r&r, I was at a "roundtable" meeting at the International plant in suburban Chicago. They gave us a tour of the plant and the dyno rooms where they test thier product. We also saw thier shop where they r&r thier engines and do other work on them. The funny part is that they had several special lifts that looked like they were disigned for removing bodies and I think they even had some bodies removed from trucks. These were not your typical twin post lift you see in a Ford dealer. This was before Ford endorsed this procedure. I guess its all fine and dandy if we all had some of these special lifts and only worked on excursions, stock, empty vans and pick up trucks that didn't have a something over the cab keeping it from coming up. I do remove bodies for 6.0l engine r&r and headgaskets when I can. I have also had to do them in the truck too. I have not had the pleasure to do any major work on a 6.4L.
  13. Me too. But I actually drink more wine than beer. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/drinkingdude.gif
  14. I just did one last week. I used a companion flange holding tool that was bolted to the flange and a 3.3:1 torque mulitplier. I had a other tech hold the holding tool and I turned the torque wrench with all my might. I feel the need to confess here. With my biggest torque wrench and the touque multiplier, the nut only got tightened to 825ft/lbs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
  15. I'm not sure that you can get the dowels seperately. Thre is a revised parts list on the degas bottle overflow tsb that explains whuich headgasket kits have the dowels.
  16. I got mine a while ago. I really don't think I'll wear it though. I might sell it on ebay.
  17. Does a dealer have to at least have 1 tech that is LCF certified in order to sell or repair them? Just curious /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
  18. Sorry it took so long to answer your question. This dealer seems to like using used engines in vehicles. Its wierd isn't it. A while ago our dealer would sell an aftermarket extended service plan that would usally find a used engine, manual trans, transfer case instead of a new one or having us just fix it. I once put a used axle assy. in a truck and after it was almost all together, I pulled the diff cover to change the fluid. Suprise, the "new" axle was in worse shape that the one I took out.
  19. I have nothing. I got 1 job this morning. It was a Ford Five Hundred that needed insturment cluster bulbs, 2 tires and a align. That was a decent job but there is nothing to do and nothing coming in the door.
  20. Thats a great website. I like the part numbers. I recently started saving part numbers on a Word document for parts that I use often like Turbo mounting kit, breather tube o ring, the yellow o rings... It will be a lot easier just writing them down and handing them to my parts guy.
  21. The VC-1 works for crap. I like to take the hose off of the degas bottle to drain it before I drain the radiator, since the oil will end up in there and up top on everything else. I have had decent luck with simple green and I think next time I'll try the liquid tide. I still have to flush the cooling system at least 3 times before I feel that is acceptable and it is still not perfect. I like the idea of just replacing the radiator. I think that is the hardest to clean out.
  22. We've got another case of "bosses that know more than techs". I had a truch with a rear end noise back in August and I said it was the rear end(2008 F450 with a dana s110). My boss could not believe that this truck needed a rear end. He is also the type that likes to second guess us and make us prove to him what is wrong. So anyway he gets the shop foreman involved who notices a noise in the muffler when he kicks the tailpipe. The foreman also says in isn't the rear end, but he really dosen't work on trucks, but he really enjoys making me look like an idiot. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_crazy.gif Now the noise that the truck had was definately not an exaust rattle, but I play along. I order a muffler and then I had to endure "The Look" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif and the "I knew that truck didn't need a rear end. Do you need me to call my sister to fix that truck for you? " 1 Week later I put the muffler in the truck and it still makes the same noise. After being forced to run around in circles I order a diff assy. I still have to listen to, "There is no way that is a gear noise. That isn't going to fix the truck. " This afternoon, I the truck is finally back and I put the diff in. My boss had to leave early today. Tomorrow just happens to be my last day at work for this dealer and the truck is fixed. It was gear noise, just like I said. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
  23. Ha, the 65 year old guy I work next to always says, "I'll tell you everything I know about cars. You got a minute? ".
  24. The last place I was at, one year we all planned a "walk out" unless they got the heaters working. I think it was late november and all of the heaters were inop. My boss sat at his desk with a big winter jacket on. When the heaters were working, it was a big deal to get them to turn them on. That was the coldest shop I ever worked at.
