2004 F-450 A/C system

I see alot of these with excessive clutch gap that will not engage when the clutch coil is warm. Check your gap. -
Fuel Economy and Calibration
DwayneGorniak replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
They call it a fuel enrichment program. I have heard about this theory since 1997 when they changed to the new body style and the overhead cam engines in the F-150's. Whether or not it's true, I can't remember anymore. As for 6.4L, 15mpg is pretty darn good. They seem to get about 4-5 mpg during regen, 9 mpg towing and 15 empty. These are the numbers I am getting from all my customers. $70,000.00 for a new truck and the fuel prices, I'll keep my 7.3L. -
Holy crap Jim. That's pretty funny. I hope I don't sound like some of those guys. I'm more for just getting recognized by our government and organizations for what we spend and never get a damn break for. It sure would be nice to have descent tax break.
-
I fully understand the situation. I have worked for some extremely greedy, money hungry, sensless, self centred bunch of bastards myself over the years. This is where alot of my opinions have been built up to what they are now. Like I said before, not everybody is as fortunate as Jim, Keith, or myself are now. I have been there! And I now scoul very much at all that greed. And I obviously let people know what I think. I never used to be this way. I used to be that guy that tried to make everyone happy and try not piss anyone off. It never worked for me. Now I just tell it like it is. And that seems to work well for me. And if it pisses anyone off, so be it. But I still believe this industry needs to do something about our expenses and lack of recognition by the big companies and the government. Especially up here in canada.

He he he. No kidding eh! This is starting to get good.

Forgive me man, because I'm sitting here laughing me ars off and I'm not sure how the hell I got this one so stirred up. For cryin out loud Alex what the hell did you get me into.

Damnit Jim, there you go throwing a curve ball into my thought process again. I must agree with you about the intellectual property issue. And I do apply those same sort of tactics to my own agenda and "career". As I said before, I have it pretty good. I'm just one of those guys that looks out for my fellow camrads and goes to bat for them when I can. And maybe the idea of a union isn't quite the right way to go, but just standing together in this country and finding some way of improving the situation especially with the amount of money we invest into this trade and not having that recognised as a necessary expense would be an acomplishment. That's my biggest beef. And not every dealer principal out there is as aprreciative as yours or mine now may be. Trust me, I've worked for some that could give a rats ass about hard you try and what you actually do for them. Most of them are usually away from work on caribean cruises or golfing and touring the world and only worrying about how many dollars you are going to bring in for them this month. And you break the record for hours in the shop, they only ask you if you can do it again next month. Just my two cents again Jim.

Well Alex, before I started in this trade quite a few years back I worked with a union and did not like it due to the fact that it was an abused union. The guys higher up on the todem pole just stood around and drank coffee and smoked cigarettes while all of us lower end scum as they called us had to bust our arses. But I've realized that it is the abused unions that I don't like. The idea of unions is great as long as they don't become abused. And I do believe it is time this trade sees one. I always had this idea that if we could somehow start a union through a magazine like SSGM or a web site we would be better off. I would start by boycoting all federal and provincial government organizations by having every single shop in this country refuse to work on any of their fleet vehicles untill they allowed us to write our tools off. You would eventually see them have issues when they have no one to keep their brakes stopping them and vehicles running, etc. But we would all have to stick together and not backstab eachother like this trade usually does. Doctors, lawyers, and dentists all stick together. Why the hell can't we for once? By the way Keith, I,m not trying to use your site to start up a union. Unless you want to start a North American led union and become the union boss yourself.Might be fun. Hee Heee.

I don't believe it's the older dog's either. I've had the pleasure of working with some very wise and intelligent seasoned vets over the years. I see alot of younger guys bailing out of this trade into the higher paying oil patch jobs that require alot less mental stress, physical demand and financial investment. This year was the first time in Canada we were able to write any of our tools off. And the government allowed us a whole whopping five hundred dollars. Whoo hooo. A few of our techs are looking for a way out of the trade as well. Just like myself, they are absolutely sick and tired of the politcs and blood, sweat, tears and huge amount of money they invest into this trade and their careers with absolutely no thanks and understanding as to what it is like to be a flat rate tech. I find this one of if not the most unthankful and financially unrewarding trade to get into. Alot of people are shocked when they hear what we invest financially into our careers and had absolutely no idea that it costs so much. Then there is the topic about what happens to a technician whent they become Master certified and have reached the top with nowhere else to go advance themselves. I have found over the years that the higher trained you get, the more you are relied upon because you have the training in everthing. Therefore you get all the hard to diagnose and wierd problems that the less trained techs sluff off or misdiagnose a few times before they come to you. And you don't make any money on those kind of jobs. You're lucky if you break even, While the less trained (smarter) guys are pounding ball joints or doing tuneups and maintenance making money hand over fist. I have bounced around myself looking for that ballance between financial rewarding and recognition. I seem to be doing just fine, but I know there are alot of other less fortunate people than myself. As for now I know I have job security and I am just going to sit back and watch the trade. And voice my opinion and jab at all those higher up mucky mucks that just never seem to listen or care.

Broadcast Message 6973 - 6.4 Oil Leak
DwayneGorniak replied to Keith Browning's topic in FSA - TSB - SSM
Just my opinion, but I think we will start seeing issues with these trucks when they get some mileage on them. I can see oil coolers from lack of maintenamce and I'm betting we will see injection issues due to contamination and possibly some issues with the new fuel. -
Alberta is redneck central and we see all kinds of rifles in the cabs of vehicles out here. Bullets friggin everywhere. Doesn't bother me though, I'm a hunter myself. But I do not leave my weapons in any of my vehicles ever. That is also against the law. Not to mention just plain stupid. With the amount of theft and crimes these days you can't afford the burden of putting a weapon into a criminals hands. Never see hand guns though. Canada has very strict laws on hand guns. You have to have a restricted licence and a membership to a gun club. When transporting hand guns, you have to transport them directly from your home to the club or gun shop for repairs with no detours from the closest route to that point of destination.

Ha Ha Ha: Daddy what was that big bug that splattered all over the windshield? That was alot of blood! The absolute worst one for me was a black Escort in 40 degree celcius (104 farenheight) weather with a black interior and the floor was covered in soiled diapers from her kids that were baking in that hot weather. I almost tossed my cookies the moment I opened the door. Hot baking crap: I will absolutely never forget that smell. It's permanently burnt into the back of my brain. Second for me is: Native trucks off the reserves full of dead animals in the back with blood dripping all over after they thaw out from the radiant heaters in the shop. Then you have to get underneath the darn things with them dripping all over the darn place. Now with job security and alot of anger built up in me from working on ugly crap like that, I absolutely refuse to work on vehicles like these. When I first started out in the trade, it wasn't allways an option to refuse. These days are quite different though. And the real muddy ugly ones, I definately charge mud time for and I charge for any kind of janitorial work I have to do. By the way, Now it's just oil patch rigging trucks that can have alot of nasty mud all over them and alot of used rubbers or pono mags in the back seat.

Tricking IDS by Mimicking XP Pro
DwayneGorniak replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
You're right. I just checked Rotunda again. And it now shows in bold red letters that: Windows Vista is not compatible. I'm pretty sure it was about a month back that there was a statement in system requirements that showed it was compatible. Go figure. -
Clicker box for manual cyl. cut-out.
DwayneGorniak replied to dieseldoc's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Sometimes I use my infrared temperature gun and point it at the exhaust manifold ports. You can usually pick out the bad cylinder that way as well. It just has to be able to read high enough temperature. I use it on IDI's and gas engines. I should start trying it on the 7.3 powerstrokes and see if I like it or the cut out tool more. -
Your guys internet access
DwayneGorniak replied to Tony302600's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
We can surf any sites we want. But we do have a problem with the shop computer being abused and plagued with viruses and spyware due to the crapy sites that people visit on it. I used to keep it clean before we had wireless and our own laptops. Now I just worry about my laptop and help the advisors and service manager with their terminals whent they ask me. Our dealer principal doesn't have a problem with us on our wireless system because he knows we are not stupid enough to ruin our computers on crapy sites. And what's wrong with surfing the net on coffee or lunch breaks? It's your own personal time and helps relax the mind sometimes. -
Maybe it will be a blessing Jim. Maybe, just maybe, Ford might make something of their own that will put faith back into those true blue customers that have shyed away. And maybe, just maybe, we might see something that we can actually get our arms into or even see the ground in some spots from the top of the engine compartment. Ya I know, I'm drinking too much again. I better have a few more.

It looks alot better than the carbon collecting system on the sick litres. I just wonder how the 64 caliber flame thrower EGR system is going to hold up. I guess only time will tell.

Tricking IDS by Mimicking XP Pro
DwayneGorniak replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I have been running a Dell Latitude D810 with a 15.4 inch widescreen for a year and half now. 1.86ghz, 1024 mb ram and an 80gb/7200 rpm hard drive, XP pro and it dances circles around our shops toughbook. I download updates on our wireless network faster than the tough book does wired or wireless. The toughbook just meets the absolute minimum requirements to run IDS. And you get so used to the touch pad that the touch screen on the toughbook just doesn't matter to me. When you need to watch the amount of pids we do as diesel techs, I'll take my 15.4 inch screen any day over that little bugger on the toughbook. Not to mention that P.O.S (PDS). -
My first encounter with a IDI 7.3

its STILL suck, squeeze, bang and blow I love it! Reminds me of another diesel quote I use quite often: If she can't suck, She can't blow! -

In the Rotunda site, it says that the ids and vcm's are Vista compatible. May want to just upgrade to that. -
Uplugging EGR valves on a 6.0?
DwayneGorniak replied to mchan68's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I posted that topic. The dumb arse's(auditor's) name is Robert Clay. He was fired in the new year. He was here last fall in October doing an audit and told us that we should be disconnecting them to help reduce warranty costs. We have also talked to other dealerships in this area that have had the same recommendation by him and they are doing it. I had a dispute with him about this at the time beacause I was already seeing it done by some dealerships in this area. It creates a huge problem, because the carbon starts building up at the valve and eventually works all the way back through the egr cooler plugging it solid. the one I have here right now has the valve ceased in the intake. the outer housing came right off the valve, using the puller. I even went as far as to removing the throttle body and trying to get under the valve with pry bars. No Budge! I now have an intake on order and am replacing the intake and egr cooler. This customer just bought this truck from another dealership like this. The egr connector and the egr throttle plate connector were taped back to the harness. As I posted on PROTECH, this is the kind of crap that makes me bitter: Crappy politics and idiots who don't care about their crappy workmanship! And as I posted on the other site If anyone is doing this and they think they are doing someone a favour, They are not!I could slap the son of a B!$ch that did or recommended this one. -
I run synthetic in my ZF-6, T'case and power sterring system as well. My ZF shifts beautifully.

I see at least one a weak lately. After the winter, they are all full of water and need the TSB repair.
