If you look in the workshop manuals in specifications for manual transmission, you will find that the ZF-5 speed took mercon synthetic in diesel applications. The ZF-6 has a pump and cooler which is the reason they downgraded the fluid. But as I said before, the synthetic discipates heat alot more and up here it doesn't gell in the cold weather. We use the synthic in power sterring systems as well. It was a fix that hotline came out with in 1995 for the Windstars mostly, but also for all ford vehicles blowing the return lines off due to gelling. 4R100's: same thing. They would gell and self destruct. We flush 4R100's up to fully synthetic, and the people who have installed trans temp guages cannot believe the reduction in temperature when towing. Just a little education based on experience.

Mercon 3 is correct. I strongly advise mercon synthetic though. It discipates heat alot better and flows better in the cold weather. Seven litre capacity.

WDS, IDS Required or not?
DwayneGorniak replied to dieseldoc's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
You are correct Alex. They only became EEC V after they had been reprogrammed up to EEC V for driveability issues with the good ole SBDS. Weren't those the days, hugh? -
Remote Diagnostics
DwayneGorniak replied to Kyle E. Grathwol's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Kyle, I agree with Bruce. I really hope this works out for you and I see your product someday. Don't flaunt your product too much to the wrong people before you have all the patents in place. If you can beat the CAN network, you've got it made. I like the idea of this unit being able to work with Autoenginuity as well. I have been looking online at Autoenginuity myself. If I could have a tool like that would work on my laptop with the Ford IDS system and with Autoenginuity, I would be a happy camper. Good luck. -
Neat. We all get days like that. Sometimes you just gotta walk away from a job and come back to it with a fresh coffee.

And you should be able to write it off for taxes too. -
Remote Diagnostics
DwayneGorniak replied to Kyle E. Grathwol's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Hmmmmm. I think I like it. This could be an alternative to buying a three thousand dollar VCM with cables that fail. An alternative to turning the VCM into a wireless unit. It depends on it's capabilities. Is it capable of running the self tests and working with our IDS system. Would it be cable of reprogramming from our IDS systems? We all have a pretty good idea of how many recallibrations have been released for the sick litre in the last five years. 350 maybe? It would have to be capable of replacing our VCM and be cheaper to be attractive. But hey, I like the idea. -
wireless VCM

Has anyone done this yet? And if so, hows it working out for you? I havn't emailed Bubbached yet, cause I was hoping to see some feedback on this site about it. -
Calibration Sourcing from the Internet
DwayneGorniak replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Bruce, do you have any cellular companies down there that can supply you with a cellular internet wireless card? Out here in the oil patch, we have all kinds of oil field consultants that need access to the internet for their laptops in their trucks. their business and office is literally in their trucks. Therefore, I am suggesting a wireless cellular card. You will have the internet wherever you go. Hope this helps. -
Hard start and miss cold
DwayneGorniak replied to dieseldoc's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Four inches of crankcase pressure-the engine is done. Two inches-it's on it's way out. Don't forget that a cylinder not contributing from and injector miss will increase crankcase pressure due to the fact that the cylinder is acting as an air pump and blowing compression past the rings. But the crankcase pressure is for sure the first thing to check. -
Does it have an aftermarket air breather system or that damn little brass tube in the wastegate pressure hose? I have seen these cause that problem.

Ask him if he would like some treatment for "pennypinchitis". Preperation H, maybe? Just kidding man. Allthough I do live by the rule that you will never know unless you try. I originally came from Saskatchewan before I landed out here in Alberta six years ago. And I learned that I had to overcome my fear of the unknown. I am used to getting the brainwashing tactics that the dealerships like to shove down your throat. Meaning that they like to brainwash you into thinking there is nothing else better out there. The dealerships out here seem to be more afriad of losing techs due to a shortage in manpower. It doesn't hurt to scare them a bit. You will find out where you stand. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Hard start and miss cold

I would check crankcase pressure and then compression. Assuming fuel and oil quality are good. If the base engine is good, I would then bench test the injectors. the Ford dealerships up here were all sent a tool kit for testing the injectors. I would have to look up the number if you need it. Can't remember it off the top off my head. Hope this gives you a start. -
We jump power to the ipr as well here. But you are correct. Don't leave power to the ipr for too long. The other diesel tech here left power on one for too long and burnt it out. It does work great though.

It's against the standards here in Alberta as well, Alex. I allways tell apprentices that no question is a stupid question and to never be afriad of asking. I also tell them that if they are not asking, they are not trying to learn. Tough one, Jim.
-
That's the one that really burns me ars. It's usually out of guilt that they changed the damn fuel filter anyway, because their over their interval limit by about four friggin times.
-
I keep an old friction modifier bottle full of oil. Also one with trans fluid for tranny or t-case applications. They work great and no mess left around.
-
I too have to have my calls sreaned. I get the hutterites all the time, and all kinds of backyarders. Allthough if a tech from a Chrysler shop or GM shop calls me, I am usually glad to help them. There are times I get Dodges or Gm's in here and I need to call my buddies at the GM or Dodge dealers for advise. And their products can be intimidating to us. But some of these small shops have no intentions of training their techs either. And if they do, Great! You just have to sort out who's who I guess.
-
A friend of mine is a chrysler tech. He thinks they will be with Cummins for a while yet. They have the new 6.7 litre cummins in the Dodge pickups and I"m not sure how long the contract is for. But he says it seems to be a nice engine. It looks like th 5.9, but it derived from a tractor truck. A little more horespower, but not a drastic change he says. I think they may have it right. Like the old saying goes: No replacement for displacement, Strain the big engine less and it meets emissions. Other than that, I don't know much about this engine. I think I will have to do some digging.
-
I didn't get Fodder either. But I laughed my ars off at that post. Keep up the good job Jim. That was awsome. I'm going to have to learn this new language because just like you I can never get past that darn censorbot.

Thoughts after the 6.4L Classroom course

You know, the thought has crossed my mind that they just may be the smarter ones and we are suckers for punishment. But I guess only time will tell. -
Thoughts after the 6.4L Classroom course
DwayneGorniak replied to DwayneGorniak's topic in The Water Cooler
Yeeppp. And half of the info on the exam wasn't even mentioned in the course. Oh, and he didn't like the video of the flame thrower. He checks this site out himself. I guess I should add that Ford has really thinned out the training instructors and put quite a demand on the remaining instructors. -
I'm just curious as to how many of you have gone to the classroom course and what your thoughts of the product are after the course. I have done the course and made it through successfully, Thank God. It's the first Time in my twelve year Ford career that I have been to a couse and ever seen one quarter of the class fail. Kinda shocked me.

Looks great. There are a couple of those running around out here for oil patch emergency responce teams. They have to be four wheel drive to get into some of the nasty places out here and in the mountains. We recieved documentation last week that the E-series is done for diesels. Maybe it's time ambulance companies just learn to adjust. I know I will be able to adjust to pickup ambulances quite nicely.

'00 Excursioon oil consumption
DwayneGorniak replied to Fredsvt's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have seen the injector o-rings cause this. It was alot easier to diag on the older 7.3's with the return fuel system. If you added die to the crankcrankcase, you would eventually see it show up in the fuel bowl. Not much you can do other than pull the injectors and have a look. It's always a good update to do anyway. Good luck. You don't have any oil coming out the exhaust do you? I've seen the turbo seals blow and fill the muffler. May want to pull the down pipe off and have a look.
