Used to be here in Ontario, when you bought a car, you could swing by the DOT office with a copy of the title, proof of insurance, and you could get a temporary tag to move the vehicle around, valid for 10 days, before you changed over the ownership. No big deal. Great for going to get it inspected, appraised, etc.
Well, here we arrive today at me getting a temp tag at the DOT office.
You now, preceding getting your temp tag, need to change the vehicle into your name. No big deal, right? Well, except now you're expected to pay 13% of the retail/wholesale book value, or an appraised value, whichever is highest, in sales tax. REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE CAR. If you submit a sales receipt for the car that's more than any of those values, you pay tax on that. The highest number wins.
Then you need to purchase new license plates, for your temp tag which used to be a paper tag for the windshield.
So basically, you need to pay tax on a vehicle and switch it into your name before you've even determined if it will ever go on the road again based on inspection results.
Government bullshit taxes piss me off.
The car I just bought has changed hands 8 times. So it's had sales tax paid 8 times. 9 now.
Just another bullshit money grab.
Sorry for the rant.
