  1. One more note to add to this, The engineers are now telling me that manual regen is not required when replacing the NOX sensor. I have a querry into hotline as to why and will update when they or if they respond. Here is my chat with hotline: Description of vehicle concern: MIL on, lacks power Diagnostics performed: koeo, checked oasis ssm 21894 perfromed roadtest and procedure, code still returns p164a, ppt rd DTC Codes: p164a Parts replaced: nox sensor Tech's question: Although not stated in pced for this code. Is manual regen still recommended to be performed after NOX replacement as well as ssm 21894 after replacement? Hotline response: Leon, The P164a is addressed in the latest PCM calibration update. Please perform TSB 11-04-21 to reprogram the PCM to the latest level. Once reprogrammed, perform the SSM drive cycle again. You do not need to perform a manual regen. The vehicles warranty repair history does not indicate the vehicle has been reflashed with the latest update. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Diag/Comments Comment from: technician Comment Date: 6/30/2011 3:13:43 PM If I may be so bold. After replacing NOX sensors when all other attempts to repair P164A fail, why are we no longer performing the manual regen? Comment from: Hotline Comment Date: 6/30/2011 3:25:50 PM Leon, We were performing manual regen's to clean the soot off the original NOx sensor to see if this would resolve the concern. The soot build up on the sensor can cause the NOx sensor to react slower than it should and it can cause this issue. But since we are replacing the NOx sensors with updated parts, there is no reason for performing the manual regen for the p164a. If a regen is needed, then we can perform it. Please make sure we have installed NOx sensor part number BC3Z-9D378-G. Then perform the SSM and thoroughly retest. If the p164a returns, run through ppt KA 3 to make sure there are no leaks in the exhaust system. You do not need to perform the entire ppt, just KA 3. If there are no leaks, replace the NOx module, perform SSM 21894 and retest. Comment from: technician Comment Date: 6/30/2011 3:32:31 PM I was always under the assumption that manual regen was performed AFTER the new sensor was installed, not before. I have never been told to perform the regen to clean the sensor first, before replacing it,only after. Are the new sensors less prone to slowing down with soot build up? How do I know if regen is required? Comment from: Hotline Comment Date: 6/30/2011 3:48:05 PM Leon, That is correct. The updated sensors will be more responsive and less prone to issues with soot build up, etc. A regeneration can be performed if the PCM is currently requesting regeneration which would be indicated on the IC. Please proceed with the previously provided recommendation. If further assistance is needed, please contact the Technical Hotline by phone using the red contact ID listed on the hotline assistance request. The Technical Hotline can be reached at 1-800-826-4694. Am I missing something here? Were we not told to perform the regen after NOX replacement, not before?
  2. I here ya. I was going to get into carpentry or computers. Although I know where my path changed. The carpentry course in high school was full and I took the wrong computer course, in the end I took Automotives instead. IDIOT......
  3. One pin fell out of the BJB for the left bank glow plugs. It's warranty so I get to replace the entire engine bay harness. Other than a few scrapes, it's not so bad.
  4. I shaved the 20mm part of the dowel slightly just to be sure. Everything looks good so far.
  5. The step is flush with the head surface, so I figure it would be the same as if it had a 19mm hole. That part of the gasket gets crushed normally, so I don't see any concerns arising from it.
  6. I found his gasket sitting on the engine mount. Noticed it while replacing the oil cooler orings. The reservoir has all new gaskets in it now and starts great.
  7. Have a 2005 here with the heads off. One head was replaced 3 years ago and is the commonized design with the stepped dowel pins, 19mm block, 20mm head. I am using the 6079 gasket kit with 19mm dowel gaskets and I do not want to open up another kit for one gasket. Has anyone used the 19mm headgaskets with the stepped dowel? All clearences look good. I was planning on putting the dowel in through the gasket from the top, then setting the head on.
  8. Ya, that too. It's amazing how much simple stuff you forget when you rely on scan tools.
  9. Been there, except it was my Windstar. Both rear wheel cylinders siezed. What a stink. Managed to back off the shoes and limped it into work. Did the job in the parking lot cause all the bays were full though.
  10. Talked to the customer. He removed the reservoir thinking he had too inorder to change the HPOP. He recalls losing the lower gasket with the filter screen, and used silicone to seal it. That's my starting point now.
  11. I have just noticed that the reservoir has also been removed because there is silicone around it. Is it possible for the oil to drain past the seal into the front cover opening that accesses the HPOP gear?
  12. Truck has been sitting for 6 years. Had hpop replaced, now has long crank. Drove it in and let it sit over night. Res. empty. Cranked engine and it filled pretty quick. 20 minutes later and the res is half full now. Removed IPR and checked orings, they look ok. Reviewed all info I have on this engine and can't find any path for this res. to empty into. Where is the oil going?
  13. I have seen trucks with 200,000 KM that have the factory STC. I figure it's load related. All the one we get in either pull a trailer, have a welder, or fill the box full of stuff.
  14. If you really had to, you could unplug 1 injector at a time and see if it runs any differant. The ones that don't create a change in idle would be the bad ones. I would still try to get a scan tool, or take it someone that has one to get it scanned, then do the work yourself.
  15. Well, you do have more important things to worry about than NOX sensors Jim.
  16. Not to be a bugger Jim, but the first SSM is 21894. It worked for me yesturday. Sadly our other diesel tech did the initial diag on friday, so I didn't check OASIS. I had done the reprogram, reseting, roadtest, NOX sensor, reseting, regen. Only to have the code return. Went to contact hotline and this new SSM had appeared. Perfromed the procedure and BINGO, all fixed. What a lot of wasted time, all documented MT, so lets see if I get paid.
  17. P164A reseting after performing TSB 11-04-21. When reseting nitrogen oxide tables, you must do it 10 times. If it still resets, roadtest in manual 5 at 55 MPH and perform ten 5 second coast downs with no accell. pedal input. Check MODE 6. Confirm 02 SENSOR ADAPTIVE LEARNING ERROR is in range (0.9-1.20). If not perfrom 5 more coast downs.
  18. We "fixed" ,and I say that cautiously, one last week. Now the customer says his mileage jumped from 17L per 100k towing, up to 25L per 100k. He is a little pissed. Which is funny because he has been our most adamant customer, wanting the update and all. Most others are calmly waiting this out.
  19. Thoughts and prayers for all in Slave Lake. Good news is that no-one has been hurt, according to the morning news.
  20. Something I ponder each and every day Jim.
