  1. I would consider that good fuel economy. I think a lot of 6.4L owners get 9-10 MPG, and I think that's pretty bad.
  2. Has anyone heard what the fuel economy should be? When I first heard that this engine uses reductant to clean the exhaust, I just assumed that it won't be a fuel pig like the 6.4L. The WBT mentions that it will still use fuel injectors to fire on the exhaust stroke to warm up the DPF. Is this engine supposed to use less fuel for the cleaning process? I'm waitlisted to take the class, and looking forward to it.
  3. The first time I was replacing as oil pump gasket on a 1993 Villager, I left the dipstick in the dipstick tube. I got the whole thing back together. This is a pretty time consuming job. I an apprentice and it took me ALL day. I put oil in it and then went to pull the dipstick out. The damn thing was stuck. I ended up breaking the dipstick, while trying to pull it out. There is a baffle in the pan that caused the fully installed dipstick to bend in a 90 degree angle and it will NEVER come out like that. It took me another day to fix that mistake. I was paid hourly at the time so I got paid, but it was still VERY aggravating. I never leave a dipstick in an engine like that. Also, when I take things apart I lay the parts out in order. For example, when I remove a front cover from an engine, I put the trigger wheel on the inside of the front cover.
  4. Oh yeah, I usally drop the exaust all the way down and remove the crossmember too. Good luck!!!
  5. You don't remove the body? You pull the engine out the front? I might try that too.
  6. Also, there should be a bracket on the left side of the frame where the engine mount attaches. remove that and the engine mount, then pry the engine/ trans. rearward when you slide the pan in and out. Why are you removing the pan? You can easily slide the gasket in place with the pan unbolted and hanging down.
  7. Anyway... You guys don't pull the intake? I think I might try that next time. maybe that's why this job always takes me too long. To answer the original question, I have seen a lot of these things leak like that.
  8. The old pump is long gone, and the tech claims he did not even remove the ferry plug. Maybe he is lying to me. That would make perfect sense why the pump would not work after he removed it. Maybe that is what was leaking and not the pump to front cover gasket.
  9. I'm not trying to get this guy in trouble or anything. Some guys here are telling me that this is really common and happens all the time, but I must have had about 50-60 of theese things off since 1997, and I have never ever had a problem.
  10. He replaced the fitting o-rings. Then I guess it came back after a few days, and he removed the pump to replace the pump to front cover gasket. Now I do remember going over to look at the gasket because I was convinced he had the wrong gasket, but it was the correct one.
  11. We had a vehicle here that had a HP oil pump re-sealed and when it was re-assembled it would not start. This happened a few months ago, and I wasn't the tech working on it so it is a little fuzzy. We ended up replacing the pump and the truck left and is fine now. One of the managers asked me today if I have ever heard of this, because he is going to have a sit down with the dealer principal and the owner of the buisness that owns the truck later today. Has anyone ever heard of this? Bruce? Jim? Keith?
  12. Yes, be careful what you wish for. I made a lot of money replacing rusted oil pans back in the day. Especially on E-Series.
  13. It used to be my favotite show, but I haven't watched it in years. +1 on the UFC fighting. I can't get enough of that.
  14. I'm not the tech working on it but if I was I would want to fix it. The tech working on it was devastated that he was WAY under the cost cap, but his mood changed when he found out he couldn't get a cam.
  15. We have an F-Series (I think a 2007) in the shop with the same concern. Cylinder #8 camshaft lobe is totally worn down. Camshafts are unavailable so this thing is getting a short block. I wouldn't describe it a popping noise, but more of a thump noise coming out the intake. Our theory is the noise is caused from no valve overlap.
  16. Why is it a salvaged truck. IMO, looks kinda ghetto.
  17. I have replaced PLENTY. Most of them are worn out where the cam attaches to the unison ring, others are cracked. I saw one about a month ago that had five cracks in it.
  18. I didn't know there were E-Series out there that aren't either school busses or ambulances.
  19. Now that you mention it, it was a little weird to be raking leaves during November in a sleeveless T shirt.
  20. We have a 2004 Excursion with a V10 that has a very intermitent P0503 and P0722, with a overdrive lamp flashing. The problem does NOT happen when towing. The tech working on this truck has ohmed the wires from the PCM to the OSS, inspected the OSS tone ring with a boroscope, stress tested all ten coils. There is also a DTC in the ABS module for the VSS. The only aftermarket device on this truck is a remote start that has been on since the truck was new. Anyone else ever run into this? I suggested that he checks his grounds.
