2005 f250 w/ loud mechanical knock under load.....
mchan68 replied to deezul's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I'm with you there Jim. And that ranks up there HIGH on my list of pet peeves. Nine times out of ten, when the conversation begins with THOSE words, I usually don't even bother to stick around to listen to the rest of it. Now Jim, how do you REALLY feel ......? -
This wasn't ESP by any chance was it? I have one an '06 in my bay right now for head gaskets. After a week of back and forth contact with WEPA, they decided to send an inspector out. Even the inspector himself was wondering why he was even sent in the first place.

Just curious as to how you were able to pinpoint which cam lobe/lifter this was. Since I believe #3 would not be visible with either the heads or the oil cooler removed, how much further teardown was required, until you could actually see the damage? We all know how much I just LOVE working on E-Series to begin with, I couldn't even imagine how much work was involved R & R'ing the engine, let alone the teardown once the engine is out. On this topic, WHAT (if anything) can/should be recommended to prevent (or reduce) the possibility of this particular failure besides regular oil changes? Any particular grade would be best? Was this particular vehicle even running when it showed up on your doorstep, Keith?

Hypermax head gaskets - installed them yet?
mchan68 replied to Clark's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have read of several instances of repeat head gasket failures when using Black Onyx gaskets with head studs. All I do know is, that sure is pricey when you consider what the factory OEM head gaskets list price is. -
4.5L Fuel Pressure Readings.
mchan68 replied to Keith Browning's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Reading through this thread makes me wonder if installing an FPS wouldn't be a good mod to do on a 6.0L engine, since fuel pressure is the only data that is not monitored and requires measurement using a manual gauge. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to reflash the PCM that would be able to "add" this to the list of PIDs that can be monitored. -
Jim Jim Jim. Where in the HELL, did you dig this shit up? Why on earth would an intelligent man like you, seemingly much wiser beyond your grade 8 droput level of education even have the time of day for this type of utter trash?

HP fuel pump banjo fittings?
mchan68 replied to cbriggs's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I too, have an old HFCM harness that I extended the length on the power and ground to the fuel pump with wiring and alligator clips that will connect to a battery. I use it to bleed the fuel system on 6.4Ls when changing fuel filters and draining vehicles that have been gassed up. Unfortunately, the 6.7L DFCM fuel pump connector is different so I'll have to find a pigtail to rig up a similar "tool". If I were doing a HPFP on a 6.4L, I too would connect the jumper to the HFCM to check for leaks too. As far as power steering and trans lines are concerned, I would run the engine temporarily using Brake Parts Cleaner with the drive belt off (no load on the engine while cranking it, and no power steering fluid being pumped), connect a hose between the transmission cooler lines (so that fluid doesn't exit and make a mess all over the place). Doing this would likely achieve having to crank the engine much much less to get it fire up once the cab is dropped, and also ensure there are no leaks as well. -
Flame wrench (utilize LOTS of finesse and CAUTION). I have removed lots of bodies off E-Series without ever having any issues, but I always attack all body to frame fasteners heating up the hex on the bottom while an assistant up top pulls the trigger with my Snap-On air weapon. Failure to do so, and the cab mounts will only laugh at you (but you knew that already).

Isn't 00B7 the code that seems to set most frequently after 11b23 is done?

Quote: He has worked at Formula too. I have spoke with him before. Seemed like a nice enough guy. A bit of a puppet, but a nice guy nonetheless. I think he's originally a GM guy. Yeah, he's definitely "up there" in age. Kinda makes me wonder how long he's going to stick around for. Very quiet and nice enough, I agree. At least he's not on my ass every day asking ME where I want trucks parked or other stupid questions like my old SM used to. Our new general manager however, was nice enough to go down to the local performance shop personally, to pick up and pay for a set of head studs himself with HIS OWN credit card for a 6.0L trifecta I had on the go (now driving it for the weekend), just to get things "moving" quicker (due to accounts receivable/payable issues between us and the performance shop). Now THAT, is a manager that has gained my respect HANDS DOWN. ..... back to the topic of our new "service advisor". His new latest and greatest saga. Apparently he has ripped off more than a few techs, by not paying them out on more than a few ROs. Not to mention, on retail quotes, one such job that was quoted for 12 hours (a tranny job I believe), he paid out the 12 hours to the tech on the job, but quoted 16 to the customer. This is just ONE of the many screw ups, that I've heard about. Only makes me so glad I haven't had too many of his ROs YET. BTW Alex, I like your new avatar. I nearly fell off my chair this morning when I first logged on. Do you use that same avatar on any of the monkey house forums?

That's what I figured Keith. Thanks.

Okay guys, I need your help here. I have a 6.0L that I'm in the middle of buttoning back together. I can't seem the locate this part anywhere in Microcat. Here's the pciture: Please tell me I don't need to hoop the customer even more than this job is already costing him, by having to buy the whole top cover of the cooler. Part numbers would help.

Self Inflicted Aggravation
mchan68 replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Automatic and manual transmission spec 6.0L and 6.4L engines use completely different bellhousing bolt patterns, therefore mandating completely different rear engine covers. -

Well, I just know that Jim Warman is going to be all over this one like flies to turd, so here it goes. As some of you might know, if you've been following my posts, my dealer just recently changed circus managers. Out with the old, and in with a new service manager and general manager. Along with these two new faces, comes along with some inevitable changes. One of our service advisors (whom is disliked by many, but is also the only technically savy one of the three), has suddenly decided to take a "leave of absence" since our new service manager has taken over (me "reading between the lines" gives me the impression that she's not coming back, at least not in the near future, or maybe distant....). In comes a new hire, who is rumored to be intended to look after all the internal service work orders (used car safetys, PDI's etc.), as well as backup when any one of our current three are off. Well, it turns out this new "advisor" is a bit of a scammer, putting it lightly. I got one of his write-ups last week, an '07 F-150 in for an oil change and four new tires, as well as "a noise while driving". I wheel it around the block, unable to hear anything unusual (or any noise that I would complain about if it were my truck). I approach him to ask for further clarification on the "noise" and condition that it occurs. His exact words to me were, "Mike just find SOMETHING, this guy is willing to spend money". My reply to him goes, "I don't give a rat's ass if this guy has $20,000 in his bank account that he's willing to dump into this thing, unless I see anything, or hear anything that bothers me, I not going to hose him". On to item #2. Yesterday, he approaches me to ask a question (even though I wasn't scheduled to work yesterday. I was there to catch up on some of the shit that I am absolutely swamped with at work). His question, "Do hybrids have spark plugs in them?". I was about to pause and reply, "Spark plugs? What are those? I only work on diesels so I wouldn't even have an inkling as to what they are, let alone their purpose or how to replace them". One of the apprentices came to vent to me yesterday too. Apparently a vehicle rolled in for its 5000 Kms. oil change, that he "sold" a tire rotation on as well. When the apprentice rolled it into his bay, he asked him if it needs brakes (or brake "service"), transmission or power steering flush? So, this is supposed to be change for the better?

Small update to cab tilt procedure.

Flame wrench. -
I just did an engine harness on an '06 E-450 with about 111,000 kms. (70,000 miles). The engine was running a little bit hotter than I'd like to see. All the convolute literally crumbled apart during removal.

I had an '11 come in about two weeks ago that has an EVAP on backorder USA not stock, so this thread is interesting for me. The SM hurried me to get it done. You have no idea what kind of smile I had on my face, telling him the part is unavailable. So I guess this is going to be a pattern failure forthcoming on these '08 to '11 trucks?

tilting the cab from the back

I do the right side up-pipe by this method now. Never heard of tilting the rear of the cab though. -

6.0 low power at acceleration from stop
mchan68 replied to jbarnett31's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Have you checked for an aftermarket air filter? I know I've replaced more than my fair share of BS aftermarket air filters (you know the ones with the foam lining in front of the element) with the OEM ones to repair a symptom like you describe successfully. -
And this one makes it up there, with one of my top ten list of pet peeves. It's one thing to have a child who is very quiet and easily entertained with his/her Gameboy or iPod or what have you, whose able to sit still in the very corner, but it is quite another, to have small children that are hyper, run around the shop or won't shut up and keep asking stupid questions. Even more so, the ones that have to touch everything they see, and the wack job parent(s) who refuse to do anything to keep them under control.
