  1. Jared, what kind of oil are you running in it. A good buddy of mine is a Bike tech and said that if you are not running four stroke oil in it and are using automotive oil, it will foam and not cause the rings to seat. He just overhauled my other buddy's Foreman beacause he pooched the engine with automotive oil. Just an idea.
  2. Do you remember if the starter bolts to the adaptor plat of the engine of to the tranny itseld? Gail, if you're going to pull the tranny out, try to run the engine with the clutch still bolted up. If you hear the rattling, it is definately not in the transmission. Just make sure your fan is not hitting the shroud. You may have to support the engine somewhat.
  3. If my memory serves me correctly, you can fire these engines up with the tranny out. Doesn't the starter bolt to the rear adaptor plate? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif I know I have had 7.3's running with the tranny's out. Man It's been a while. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
  4. I would have to say it is probably the damper springs in the clutch disc. Did the clutch sound O.K before you replaced it? I have installed Luk single mass systems and never had an issue with them.

  6. 10W30=10 Winter Weight, 30 summer weight or 15W40=15 winter weight, 40 summer weight.
  7. So.... going to the thinner oil didn't really do anything for these wonderfully engineered pieces of coolant burners did it? And we still have the same ole issues with oil viscosity protection against thermal breakdown in hot weather especially when towing. Funny, going to 15W40 in the summer and 10W30 in the winter always worked for 7.3"s and Cummins engines, but we are stilling looking for miracle fixes for the Sick-o's. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_crazy.gif I still believe in the 15W40 in summer and 10W30 0r 5W40 synthetic in winter. It just seems to always have worked. I guess what I am saying is: is there really a fix for design flaws?
  8. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Toughbook is a total piece of junk. They actually had a special on Global news about it. they did show how the military uses them and they drove over it with an SUV several times and it survived. I'm just pointing out the fact that the USB ports and the small processor are the weak points and like I said, the touch screen is an advantage. As for the Dell, Back then when I ordered mine Latitudes were their workhorses and you can buy them with shock resistant hardrives. When I purchased mine, that was one of the first things I looked at. You can also get them with a sealed keyboard wich was another option I definatley saw as being valuable. And I made sure I ordered it with the biggfest processor and the most RAM I could get at that time. The Dell is nowhere near as tough as the Toughbook when it comes to dropping it or throwing it around, But if you order the right one, they aren't all that bad for the money. Especially if you are buying out of your own pocket and using it as your own. And like Jim said, if you are going to have a bunch of rough arses throwing something around, it should be a Toughbook. I looked into DELL's website and if you go under the Small Business section, it says you can get the Precision Notebooks with XP Pro still.
  9. Well you know, we had the warranty Nazi's up here kick back claims of EGR valve repairs because the dates on the valves were newer than the build dates on the trucks. Well no shi!t Sherlock! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif After a very rude conversation I had with WEPEC and explaining to them about how many freakin valves can be put into one truck and telling them to look in OASIS, we got our claims payed in full. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_crazy.gif
  10. I always have my battery charger plugged in. I also have a 175 watt inverter that I plug in inside the cab whenever I am going to have my laptop in the cab for a while. No issues that way.
  11. Here is a link to the chart that belongs in the TSB: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=486&nocache=1
  12. Ahhh finally found it. Here's the old thread: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3870&page=2#Post3870 And here's the old TSB i have always gone by: Printable View (28 KB) TSB 05-16-6 MISFIRE, LACK OF POWER, SMOKE, SLOW CRANK IN COLD WEATHER ON INITIAL START UP - 6.0L ENGINE Publication Date: August 3, 2005 FORD: 2003-2005 Excursion 2003-2006 F-Super Duty 2004-2006 E-Series, F-650, F-750 ISSUE: Some 2003-2006 F-Super Duty, Excursion and 2004-2006 F-650/750 and E-Series all equipped with the 6.0L engine, may exhibit a misfire, lack of power, smoke, or slow crank in cold weather on initial start up. This may be due to the oil viscosity being too high. The use of high viscosity multi-grade oil can slow cranking speed more than 30% at -20° F (-29° C), resulting in longer crank times. High viscosity multi-grade oil may delay fuel injection timing by slowing reaction of high-pressure oil control system integral to each injector. ACTION: Refer to the oil viscosity chart provided in this TSB. It has been updated and is recommended for all 6.0L DI Diesel model years. Apply the vehicle operating conditions to the oil viscosity chart and select the appropriate viscosity oil grade. Use Motorcraft or equivalent oil conforming to Ford specification WSS-M2C171-D or API service categories CI-4 PLUS, CI-4/SL or DHD-1. If CI-4 PLUS oil is not available, CH-4 is acceptable. NOTE: ALSO INCLUDED IN THE CHART IS CLARIFICATION OF THE RECOMMENDED OIL VISCOSITY GRADE TO USE WHEN TOWING A TRAILER. Figure 1 - Article 05-16-6 WARRANTY STATUS: Information Only - Not Warrantable -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2005 Ford Motor Company Keith, I can never get the photo's of the charts to enter into the posts. What are the odds you can copy the chart out that TSB and insert it for me?
  13. Didn't they say that about the 6.4L? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
  14. Be careful with this one Keith. We had a very similar situaion here and in the end because of the fact that Ford contradicts themselves between the warranty policy manual and the owners manual we did not have a leg to stand on to deny warranty and the customer was smart enough to know it but not smart enough to maintain his truck properly. That was one of the poinnts I was trying to get at in my initial reply to your question. Hotline wanted us to deny warranty based on the engine hours, but there was nothing we could do to when we based it on the owners manual at 200 hour intervals.
  15. I must agree that the IDS sytem is the best system that Ford has ever come out with. And with a PC or Laptop based system, your adaptability and upgradeabilities are endless. But I also agree that the Toughbook is overrated. The only thing the Toughbook has going for it, is the touch screen. It has a small screen and a small processor and locks up and has brain farts alot. We are on our fourth tough book in the shop. The first one had bad USB ports, the second one had a bad harddrive and USB ports, and the third one had bad USB ports again and we have been using those goofy little pigtails that screw into the ports. And now our new Toughbook doesn't want to calibrate the touchscreen properly, so everyone is using the touchpad. And don't even ask me for my opinion on the POS (PDA). My Dell Latitude D810 will be three years old this September and has been great. I love the 15.4 inch screen for looking at PID's and especially when I am on road tests looking at PID's. My DELL has been through hell and back and survived. Two months after I bought it, I dropped it on the floor in the shop and broke the case. Thank God for the Accidental Death and Dismemberment Warranty that DELL offers. And once you are used to the touch pad, it's quite easy and fast to use. There's my /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif .
  16. They don't know their ass from a hole in ground when it comes to the CJ-4 rated oil. But if you read the owners manual, it clearly states to use 15W40 in the summer when towing. I will have to dig up that old TSB when I find it.
  17. If you leave these coolers sit on the bench long enough after they have been removed wet, the carbon will actually absorb some of the coolant and they will not look wet at all. Maybe the Warranty Nazi's look at something as simple as that and use it as an excuse to stick it to us.
  18. We look up our own times Dave. I prefer it this way, because I know I,m not getting screwed. You should be able to appeal that claim with a better explanation.
  19. I say you should look in the owners manual for maintenance for stationary power sources or severe duty intervals. Down yonder you folks say one hour is equal to 33 miles in the waranty policy manual and up here we say one hour is equal to 55 km's when calculating for stationary power sources. They also explain stationary power sources as trucks being used with pickers, PTO's, welders, etc. However, the owners manuals say to change the oil every 200 hours when used as severe duty. So if this is the way to calculate, I would say he should have had almost six oil changes, 5.89 to be exact. However, if you use the warranty policy manual method of one hour equals 55 km's I would say there should have been 8 oil changes. But do we use severe duty intervals, or do we use stationary power source intervals, or do we just say f$ck it and go with the mileage? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif Damn, this can get confusing and either way you look at it, Ford doesn't really have anything written in stone. This is a topic that has always burnt me ars. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/flamethrower.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif I would for once like to see something that is black or white.
  20. Check your oil level as well. If it is low, then you may have a failed turbo pumping oil out the exhoust. But you will know when you pull the turbo off. But it may be what Keith said: very sooty coolant. Don't forget to check the oil cooler for restriction with the Rad Kit Plus which is explained in the TSB. And you will soon find out that there can be a whole shit load of stuff wrong on one engine rather than just one simple thing. Welcome aboard.
  21. A Boss is like a diaper, always on your ass and usually full of SHIT! Why don't you slip into something more comfortable, like a coma! A couple of bumper stickers my wife had: I wonder if you would drive any better if your cell phone was shoved up your ASS! Keep Honking Asshole, I'm reloading!

  23. I had a very similar issue with an )08'. However, my issue wa a check engine light for driver side bank of glow plugs. I was losing the whole bank intermittently. The result was a terminal in the battery junction box that would push down when you installed the fuse. The plastic locking tab in the BJB was broken and when you pull the fuse out, the termonal would sit up properly. But when you would push the fuse back in, it would push the terminal down inside the box. Danged Gremlins! But I will never forget it.
  24. See ya Saturday. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
