  1. This is almost humorous. I am the ONLY diesel tech in our shop, the one guy that I was training called it quits about 2 months ago and is doing tatoos full time at a reputable shop, he's making more money and never gets dirty. The point is that I am so swamped with warranty driveability that I don't have the time to do customer pay work, so I don't even fret estimates. If there are customer pay lines on the RO, after I finish I hand that work off to one of the other senior techs in the shop. Newbies don't get freebies! As a result I get a helping hand, without question, whenever I need it, and that includes guys picking up other warranty jobs on a ticket that are not diesel related. This is not to say I don't perform pay maintainence on my jobs, that I do while repairing warranty items, but simply put, I don't have the time to get involved with brakes, steering, tires, etc. At almost 6'3" 275lbs with a low pentchant for stupidity, my three SAs know not to get me pissed, so when I relay info to them about a vehicle they try and make every effort to communicate with the customer. Everyone knows that I will not be the last man standing, holding a bag of crap in my hands, just because someone else didn't do their job. Is it perfect? No, but it's far from the worst place I've worked for. I know what my job is, I do it and then I go home.
  2. Cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!!
  3. Is there a way to access windows for maintainence ops, just like a normal computer. We just got ours working again with a new battery, and it occured to me that this thing has got to have almost 8 years of crap on it's hard drive. Is there any reason I can't access this stuff, I mean I clean and defrag drives on the rest of the diag tools, I even installed a registry cleaner on IDS, and the thing works better than it ever did before. Thanks for any help, I'm trying to give the shop another working option so the IDS is freed up for me, there is nothing worse than a quick lube guy programing a key when I need IDS, and I'm not about to surrender my personal NGS. Thanks again.
  4. Damn and I just threw out all my old printed TSBs. Anyways look for the clogged PCV screen, and the TSB was related to the intake breather system PCV hose assembly, what would happen is oil would collect in the upper plenum and get injested into number 8 fouling the plug. It seems to me that there was a hose rerouting and or a change of nipple position. Damn thats a long time ago.
  5. 10 dollars Canadian? Damn thats like 6 dollars here, Cheap bastiges! Sorry! Excellent question though, when someone comes up with an answer, I'll be all ears, because I have yet to meet a service manager or service and parts director that gave 2 craps about my intellectual properties.
  6. Soooooooooooooooooo. Jim has got herpes? Sorry!! I just couldn't resist. Sometimes it gets a little stuffy in here with all this diesel tekky nonsense.
  7. HO HUM Just more of the same, except I find this incredibly embaressing. Who me? Nah that's just a rumor, I dig ditches for a livin, don't know nothin about them oil burners.
  8. Perhaps I am talking outta turn here but it was my understanding that the E-Series as shown was definitly getting the 6.4L. This was relayed to me by both my Ford FSE some time ago and more recently by a Navistar FSE who said that they have running units. Whatever. Doesn't look a whole lot different than the current crop of E-Series. I was expecting something with a much longer nose but still van like. From a company that lost 12 BILLION dollars last year, I don't see them letting any possible sales get away.
  9. I am curious as to why you think it is a scam? Would you explain your reasoning please?
  10. We finally got a 6.4L 350. I performed the PDI. Myself and my diesel trainnie took it out for it's first flogging. I eased into it until it reached temp and then started driving it hard. Maybe its just us but it felt no stronger than any stock 6.0L we've driven, in fact we thought it felt somewhat lazy on the bottom end. We also did not care for the tranny shift program, especially at WOT. I did seem to notice an increase in performance in the 50 to 80 mph range, but there again I expected a downshift and a slam in the seat, but it seemed to be content to stay in 5th. I understand that it is a new vehicle and the engine has to break in but it just didn't seem any stronger than a 6.0L. In fact I drove an '05 350 SRW lwb crewcab w/ a plow frame and toolbox and it actually felt stronger. Don't get me wrong, it didn't run bad, it just didn't impress me. As well, are everyone elses 6.4s out of steam at 3000 rpm? I drove this thing approx 25 miles and while I like it,I don't love it and I have to wonder what the reaction of the general public will be.
  11. Seems pretty typical. If your brave enough to keep it to the wood you can see it go all the way to 85% and be doing 107 mph pulling a grade in a crew cab 350 and feel it run out of fuel. That translated into just over 4000 psi. You can also achieve the same effect at WOT 3400 rpm hold MAN 3 and stand on the brakes and fuel loading the engine to 2500 rpm, should go to 83-85% and around 4000 psi. One thing is for certain if the HPOP is going to fail this is when it will happen. 25 to 80% seems normal but there are lots of variables to IPR duty cycle. I just drive em like my hair's on fire and I'm being chased by Johnny law.
  12. Hey, does anybody know if I can remove the EGR valve and replace it with a dummy one so that I can improve performance? Oh yes, my favorite from the old 6.0L PSD site. I spoke with an engineer at Banks not long ago and he sounded like a proud papa talkin' about their upcoming package. I have conveyed to the general manager and the service manager that I will not tolerate modded 6.4s and will not work on them. SIMPLE AS THAT!
  13. Well that pretty much stands to reason, but I wonder just how much fuel is being dumped? Seems that even a gallon would be an aweful lot. BTW, Has anyone experienced a regen? I did! With the EGR throttle wide open, cleared the class out, and stunk for the rest of the day. I shut it down while it was happening and then checked the EGTs number three reached just over 1000 dgrs F. Seems in school that the third class third workgroup got the pleasure of gettin' the regen. I told the guys about it and asked that if it happens when I have one in the shop, TO PLEASE NOT PUMMEL ME.
  14. 26 hrs with R&R, and it is customer pay. while the motor is out it also gives you the chance to address any additional issues, such as exhaust leaks, and top end oil and fuel leaks with minimal additional cost to the customer, which they are generally happy about.
  15. When you log in to FMC Dealer there is a new video called "Rick Titus first impression of the new Tundra". I have tried watching on my work computer a couple of times but it keeps locking up MP, so I will have to check it out at home. Listened to it and there are some interesting observations.
  16. Anyone seen this before? Nifty little item, it would be nice if there was a note about whether it stays or goes. Seems like it could sustain the temps but what the hell do I know!
  17. Keith, I believe you have answered your own question. I don't know what you got in Jersey, but here in CT. the diesel is basically crap. There is only one station locally I recomend, and thats because the company that owns the station supplies fuel to most of the local Citgo stations and they fuel their Kenworths there daily to the tune of 200 gallons times 6 trucks, so you know the diesel is always fresh and does not ferment in their tanks. As far as the BG diesel injector service you are addressing just the fuel supply portion of the injector and it has no affect on the actuation portion of the injector. Makes perfect sense to me and I usually see a smother running engine that produces less soot and decreases in exhaust odor. I find the service works well with neglected fuel systems but I try to sell the service as part of a comprehensive fuel system maintainence program, which would also include regular water drainings, the use of our additives, the best fuel you can buy, and regular filter changes. Besides, most of my work is warranty, so I'll take that 2 hour cash job anytime.
  18. I've had 4 fail and 3 pass. Got a run on 7.3s all of a sudden and 6.0 stc fittings, so there have not been more to test, but I like it very much.
  19. Jim, Excellent post! Without actually being the one repairing the vehicle, based on Tony's description and the fact that it is obviously intermittent, my money is on the harness and I don't mean the FICM harness, although that MAY be a concern. Best of luck Tony.
  20. Haven't seen one of these in awhile. Has anyone ever removed one w/o removing the intake much like the late models, is it even possible? Think I would know this, but nooooooooo. Thanks, Stephen. BTW, It's an '04 minus the intake crossover, thats why I'm curious.
  21. "That place never ceases to amaze me... The pure lazyness some over there show, then they complain that the product sucks(because they dont fully understand it)" Truer words may not have been spoken previously. How stupid do you have to be not to pass an open book exam? Wait! I remember someone who did. It was a qualifier exam for the State of Connecticut emissions repairer course. Damn, now that I think of it, that was pretty funny and yes, the grease monkey WAS that stupid.
  22. I don't know; Yonkers ain't so bad. I am from central CT. though so the drive is fairly easy. You guys from the island and southern CT. always seem to get caught in the !@#!?$!. Hell, if it stays as warm as it has I'll even ride the Chief there.
  23. I was told by my FSE last week that a new E-Series is in the works and that the nose was longer and reminicent of the '08 Super Duty. Possibly a tilt nose? He did also say that the van will get the 6.4L in the future. One thing for certain is the 6.4L has zero chance of fitting in the current van and this was confirmed to me this week by a Navistar engineer working with me on a problem child.
