  1. There's also the daily "broadcast messages" on fmcdealer
  2. +1 Works wonderfully if theres just some crap on the wire!
  3. Long story....There are two tech's in my dealership qualified to do diesel work, myself(certified in everything except auto/manual trans and gas engine performance), and my brother-in-law (dual senior master as of a month ago). Three other techs in the shop (one just started working for us and had never been in a dealership before and has no ford certs, one with electrical, brakes, gas engine repair, steering/suspension, climate control, and the other has electrical, brakes, steering/suspension). New guy has diesel experience from independent shops (chevy, dodge, ford(7.3), and some bigger stuff. SM told us he was hired to help with gas stuff and diesel stuff would continue coming to the two of us. So a little over a month ago, a truck comes in and one of our two service advisors(both have been with us less than 3 months) gives it to the new guy - 6.0 cel(warranty) diagnosis - needs an egr valve(failed egr test - maf out of range) installs egr valve - still broke....he asks my brother-in-law for help - has maf code - wire broken at sensor - order's pigtail and repairs - truck goes on it's way - SM ran it with my brother-in-laws number on it. So my brother-in-law and I go and talk to GM/SM about it - both GM and SM tell us it won't happen again and blah blah blah....fast forward to the beginning of May - family emergency(funeral) in California - we both take off two days (10th, 11th) and then got snowed out and didn't make it back 'til late on the 12th. Now with the stage set....truck comes in May 27th on the hook - customer is PISSED!!!! Truck billows white smoke! Handed to me - recent repair history - May 12th - in our dealership - diag/egr valve replaced(customer complaint - blows white smoke, cel, lacks power) "I" made the repair??? I don't recognize this truck.....I perform diag on it and find EGR Cooler is BLOWN!!! Performed EGR Cooler/Oil Cooler Kit replacement, retest for headgaskets - ok, oil change, flush. Then I notice the date on previous history....I WASN'T HERE WHEN THAT HAPPENED....Confront SM - he get's pissed off and tells me I can't go on vacation same time as my brother-in-law....first off - they knew when they hired both of us this might be the case at times, second off, it's not uncommon for us to be stacked 2-3 days before getting a look at a diesel truck, this truck came in on the 11th, and was "repaired" on the 12th, We were both in the shop on the 13th. So I go and talk to GM - he says "well, the guy had a "gun" to our head, and we had to fix his truck"....."You told me a month ago this wouldn't happen" I told him if it happens again, I'm done!! As far as I know, they still have another tech's number active(dual senior master) retired last november. We got the number a while back from our training instructor to contact Ford regarding misuse of tech numbers....It just urkes me that they try to pull this crap, my SM told me "we go out of our way to make sure you two get the diesel work when we've got other's standing aroung", I responded "you're not going out of your way, you've only got two guys certified to fix them". He says "the cp work doesn't require certification, and we still give it to you". I told him "if you think we're going to do all the warranty work while you give the CP to them, you better start looking for some new tech's, I didn't sign on to do ONLY warranty work!" Not once, but TWICE has the new guy been given a 6.0 and failed to fix it properly - first time replaced a part that didn't need replaced, second time only fixed the result of the problem, not the CAUSE....Now my tech number and NAME are on the CUSTOMER COPY of the invoice and "I" couldn't fix it right the first time.....It's not just my tech number....IT'S MY REPUTATION AND MY LIVELIHOOD!!!! Am I wrong to react this way? What would you do?! I'm under contract to stay here through the end of next January (or pay back moving expenses (prorated of course)) but after that, I'm thinking it's time to move on........
  4. We get 1.4 diag on any CP diesel work (discounted from normal shop rate - $99.95 diesel diag) and charge 2.0 on f-series.
  5. +1, I've PDI'd a pickup and two chassis cabs and all were just over 20 psi with no codes/noise.
  6. I was speaking of the up pipe bolts. it appears Aaron was talking about cab bolts, my fault for not quoting
  7. AC Voltage should not exceed 0.5VAC. Not sure how high it would have to get to take out the IDM though...
  8. I can usually get the bolts out after letting them sit with PB Blaster on them for about 10 minutes, still have those that need the torch though!
  9. 2" thick painters tape works well for covering intake holes....I usually put 2 pieces thick on each side.
  10. 2008 F250 126,000 miles. Oil field service truck. Replaced injectors 1,3,4,5,6,7,and 8 two weeks ago - had a miss on 5 and 6. Customer requested replace all others except the one we did in January(number 2) went on a 4 day vacation after repairs....come to find out when I got back the truck had come back 2 days later with a CEL on. Other tech(not diesel certified....both myself and my brother in-law(the other diesel tech in the shop)) were on vacation together(family stuff in California) had looked at it and ordered a glow plug harness because "I couldn't get the seal to go into the hole in the valve cover, I ohmed out the harness and it was open on #2." So the truck comes back in for the harness that had been ordered, it's given back to me at this point, so I look at the old harness and see the seal is about a half inch(13mm(12.7mm if you want to get real technical) for you northerners) away from touching the valve cover. pull back on the harness and attempt to seat it - feel it clip onto the glow plug, but still sitting just as far back from the valve cover.....This is odd....try one more time for good measure - same result. Pull the glow plug.....ah hah!!!! I have never seen this before! Has anybody else? I contacted hotline and was told - possible heat fatigue, but there have been no reported issues of this nature.... Gave the new harness back to parts since the old one was fine....measure the harness when you ohm the wire, not the harness to ground....told parts not my fault, sorry you have to take it back, but you can take it up with SM or other tech since it was ordered in....
  11. +1, also, like Keith mentioned using a gear wrench for the bolt under the fuel filter housing, I've found that an 8mm wobly impact on a 6 inch extension gets that bolt easily on MOST trucks.
  12. Having oil changes at quick lube? Run plug on with impact gun maybe?! Never seen it before, just my thoughts.
  13. YEP, IT'S BROKE....WHAT'S THE CAM GEAR LOOK LIKE ON THE BACK? I REMEMBER SOMEONE ON HERE POSTED THEY HAD ONE WITH CAM GEAR DAMAGE....ARE THE LIFTERS STICKING IN THEIR BORES?
  14. Hey....You dropped your pocket!!
  15. 'cept for tsb 09-08-03 - it specifically states to change the oil after doing coolers!
  16. There is an option with the IDS hooked up to turn regeneration off for testing purposes. That is what I figured he was referring to.
  17. And the "updated" driving screw broke on ours on the first use......SERIOUSLY?!?!
  18. I did notice that and I think it is really crappy!!!!
  19. use a digital caliper to measure the dowel pin holes.
  20. We haven't run into any issues on our 2 IDS', I don't think anybody's used the VDR since we updated though.... Thanks for sharing - GOOD TO KNOW!!!!
  21. I charge 10 hours (CP) on a truck, haven't done one on a van.
