  1. I bought a new laptop a couple weeks ago with Windows 8 on it, it takes a little getting used to, but it's pretty easy to navigate, there's still a 'traditional' desktop, but then there's the 'start' screen which is laid out kinda like a tablet, or like Leon said, kinda like the Xbox 360.
  2. Or just pour some ice water on the IPR, it will have the same affect.
  3. That's definitely a weak pump if that's all it puts out with the block offs installed and IPR commanded shut, this system puts out 3000+ psi while driving (and that is with the IPR 'bleeding' off pressure).
  4. We're robbing a pump from another truck and need to re-seal it, according to my parts guys they're only available with the pump or cover. I seem to recall getting all the seals previously without the pump/cover, but I don't remember if it came from Ford or International? Anybody have a part number they'd like to share? Thanks for the help!!
  5. Happy holidays to you Jim!! Come join us down south here in a month and a half for a REAL THANKSGIVING
  6. From the PTS website hover your mouse over 'Rotunda', then hover over 'Diagnostic Tool Support', then hover over 'Medium Duty Truck Diagnostics', Then click on 'Download Software' and follow the onscreen instructions
  7. Thanks for all your inputs, it is small/fine brass shavings, I know there's brass bushings in the HPOP, and I thought the bearings (main/rod/cam) were brass with a coating on them? At any rate, the tech and advisor decided they both need engines, customer is not fixing them as of yet, I believe they're still sitting in our back lot. Thanks again!!
  8. an 06 should just need to keep pushing the reset button until you get to eng hrs, it's the 08's that you go to system check and then hold reset and let it cycle through the system check.
  9. 2 of these beasts belonging to the same company, both towed in - crank no start - a little background - the company just bought them both from a ?sister franchise? and wants to get them running. Another tech is working on them, but the adviser is asking me for advice. 1st one: around 130k - 140k miles Wasn't building ICP, but had base oil pressure, air tested, IPR not moving, removed and inspected IPR, screen has a hole in it, brass debris? Replaced HPP and IPR, Truck started and ran for about a minute and then died, IPR has hole in screen again, removed oil filter, found lots of brass shavings in bottom of filter cap. 2nd one: around 140k - 150k miles Visual inspection - oil in coolant (oil cooler is blown) won't build ICP, oil is low - filled oil, still won't build ICP, air test - leaking at right side valve cover (valve cover has not been pulled and pinpointed leak yet), removed oil filter and inspected - some brass shavings in bottom of filter cap - not as much as 1st one, removed and inspected gerotor pump, normal wear, but also has 3 spots on the outer gear and 6-8 spots on inner gear where something very small went through it and left an impression in the gears, about this * big this is as much as I know, I can find out more on Monday, but the adviser is not confident in calling the customer since the tech working on the second van won't give him a solid opinion. Although he led the adviser to believe that if he were to pull and inspect the gerotor he could tell if it needed an engine....(read this guy doesn't own up to anything, anything that goes wrong was someone else's fault...so and so said to do it this way....he said this is what's wrong with it....) Any thoughts?
  10. use them for heads and block =D be gentle and try not to throw sparks
  11. I made a set of 'jumper wires' specifically for this occasion, use connectors off an old FICM harness and 2 injector cores (ford throws the electrical away when they rebuild them anyway, just make sure they're cores and not warranty) works exceptionally well!
  12. I do a partial cab lift to do a HPP no matter if I can lift the cab or not(except on the 2 limos I've done where there was no moving the cab with the fiberglass limo body over the top of it), pull the turbos, and I can have the pump out in about 2 1/2 hours that way, ALWAYS torque the gear on the bench, saves the trouble of doing it in the cab
  13. I've heard this before, and I've tried and tried to no avail....remove the top cover, slides right out, I don't even pull the cab. Replaced the High Pressure turbo yesterday on one....that was after lunch
  14. This is where I draw the line, IF I WON'T DO IT TO MY OWN CAR, I CERTAINLY WILL NOT DO IT TO A CUSTOMERS CAR!!!! As if MY life/safety is more important than THE CUSTOMERS life/safety?! I mean no offense to Matt, but this is my opinion.
  15. Been over 100*(up to around 108*f) for a week and a half here, finally down to 98*f today....2 fans and a swamp cooler in the entire shop, talk about HOT!!
  16. No signs of torque converter overheating, hotline says to pull the rear cover and make sure the dowels aren't protruding more than 10mm out on the engine side, waiting for advisor/customer, got plenty of other stuff to work on while I wait
  17. I've got an '03 Excursion 6.0 liter in my bay now that had a crankshaft and flex-plate put in it 3000 miles ago because the flex-plate was broken due to excessive crankshaft endplay, the flex-plate is broken again....dowels are still in rear cover, I just submitted a hotline contact on it, just wondering....
  18. Up through 2010 UD was using Hino engines, in 2011 they switched to Volvo on edit: Same engine, but you still had to use the UD software to talk to them, the Hino software won't work on UDs. Now we have a new laptop with yet another scan tool on it for Volvo....Nice how so much of the software we have is incompatible other software so we have to have separate computers for each....
  19. The same way all us FAKE technicians fix it, get the information, whether by buying it(after all, us dealer techs have it because our dealerships BUY the access to the information) or researching it, and if you know MORE than the local dealer, how could us FAKE technicians on this site help you? We only have the same information as your local dealer from FORD. There are good techs (to truly be considered 'good' in my eyes, you must be humble and willing to help those around you to be good!) And there are bad techs 'leave me alone, I don't have time to help you' attitudes fall in this category. I went through Universal Technical Institute and their Ford Accelerated Credential Training (F.A.C.T.) program, I've been in the dealership for 5 years, I'm a Diesel and Chassis Master, and 3 transmission classes away from being Senior Master, I don't wish to toot my own horn here, but I am dedicated to my work and providing the best possible living conditions for my wife and children, because of this I am motivated to do my best. I am one of the top techs in my dealership (40+ techs) but am also one of the newest (to the industry) techs, I'm good because I am still like a sponge, absorbing all the information I can to help me do my job BETTER. My shop foreman comes to me with any problems he has, even when it's just to run a thought past someone else on a problem vehicle. Whenever another tech has a problem with something, their advisor tells them "go ask Josh". I am of the opinion that if we are not trying to be better, then we are probably getting worse. Or in other words, if we're just hoping that the information we know today will be good enough for all our tomorrows, then we will be way behind where we should be. Our industry is constantly changing and adding new technologies, if we are not staying up to date on our training and learning all the new stuff, then we will be unable to repair the vehicles as time goes on. I have a motto I like to say, "I know nothing!" I truly believe this too, while I can fix anything that comes in my bay, I know where to find and how to use the information to fix these vehicles, whether it's a Power Stroke (which is what I mainly work on), or one of the other brands we service (we're a Hino, UD, Isuzu, Cummins, Allison, Ford dealer) And yes I am also certified on several of these. I still have to question and re-question when I come across something new. All I'm trying to say is Strive to be better and better those around you, and you will find life is much more fun!
  20. Ours showed up today, shop foreman was working on getting them up and running, only one of our laptops was at 79, so he's updating the others. I'll try it out tomorrow
  21. We recently had a whole batch of computers replaced, and new ones installed in the shop(we're converting to Electronic RO's), and I being the techie that I am got the assignment of making them all work with PTS since they all are windows 7/IE 9.
  22. Go HERE and follow the instructions, this should solve your concern with viewing PTS in IE9.
