Here is the story...early build F550. Its had all the 6.4 problems from burnt wire harness at pump, leak radiators, cooler issues from low coolant etc. several techs have had this thing and well the latest is broke rocker arms. the first time it was cylinder 4. the second time the exhaust side rocker and bent intake push tube. now less than 2k miles later its got the intake rocker on cylinder 5 broke. removed push tubes to find lifter on exhuast side shoot me in the face as I removed the push tube. Now head needs to come off to replace the lifters. To make this job worse is the overhead bed rack monstrosity they have installed on this truck. No way to remove it and every repair has been body on taking forever! looking through the WSM for head R+I you have to remove the engine to remove the head!! Seriously! make a sucky job worse! Last I checked no SLTS for body on repairs means we are going to get boned. customer installed his own bed and obviously did not read the body builders manual! This bed was on a 6.0 truck before that was a total pos. wonder what the combination is here??? interesting note tho I beleive I can change the rockers by unbolting the hp manifold and lines to injectors. very and I mean very! carefully drop the rail a bit and move out of the way. This will work for cylinder 1,3,and 5 but 7 will need to come all the way off. Might help with not having to replacing that fuel line to the pump. If you do yank the trans out real quick, pull the downpipe and right side y-pipe to access that thing. quicker than yanking the body. any tips for body on repairs? like motor R+I?

I had one similar and worked with a few differnt people on the hotline/roundtable guys on this issue. had to do a little rewiring on the first one before the program came out.
-
Ive had 3 or 4 of these lately. most due to low coolant levels from leaky radiators. eventally it will errode enough to leak into the oil system.

yup its possible. have one sitting here in the shop now. No knocking,no abnormal noises, no odd cranking or compression loss only a slight misfire on throttle tip in. vehicle had a history of egr cooler blowing up and hydrolocking, not sure if it happened during failure event or when someone was cranking on it. none the less its bent and allowed the crank to knock the bottom of the skirt off. Ill get some pictures up after the weekend.

this is a good video and Ive been showing it to anyone I can at the dealer, mostly fleet customers that cant seem to get it into their head
-
I get this too. I refuse to use the old part when the new ones are out. sorry but they cant send that stuff back.

The main company we deal with is the other way around. if it needs it, it gets it no matter what the cost.

2 weeks and I have yet to get a spin. we are either behind on submitting claims or we are opted out. dunno but I need some extra cash!

been away too long it seems. missed all the fun!

updated the STC procedure with new parts(which we all already knew about right!? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cover.gif) has a confusing op list sorta like the coolant vent tsb. this might even cover the standtubes and d-ring o ring problems. look to be about a wash between the old tsb and the new with only loosing less than an 1.0hr for an stc repair compared to the old.

The plugged egr cooler test?
DieselD replied to Mekanik's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I agree thats not a very good test if you can even call it at test. Ive had some trucks run and some that do not with the valve out. I do enjoy the smoke show and coworks telling me Im number 1 after that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif -

yeah they are not too bad. I dont know what I did with the picture now. its not a bad idea to get a second hand to help lift and lower that huge monstrosity -
No 6.4 repairs to more than I can handle....
DieselD replied to DieselD's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
as soon as those two get back on the road another comes in with a broken rocker arm. yeah and the cab was inpossible to get off due to an overhead rack loaded to the gills. cab on procedure sucks! -
So yeah go from none to a ton over night! First one has a blown up engine with 2 burnt pistons. From looking at the freeze frame this truck was a runaway for some unknown reason. best guess is and injector stuck wide open and away she went. either way ford is sending a new complete assembly line engine for it. I have the body off already and powertrain sitting on the floor do to being a ZF trans truck. who knows when my engine will be here that was last week. now I have its sister truck(1 vin number off) and its got an oil leak. guess where? friggin bedplate!! yeah Im sure. checked all the normal suspects. so I get to tie up another rack with a body off. lets not even count the dozens of radiator leaks Ive done!

Oh how I hate these lousy LCF problem childs. I have an 06 with 41800miles on it. when it sits over night it will have a long crank anywhere from 20secs to having to not starting at all. Last week it was around 35* and had an excessive crank time, white smoke and needed to cycle the key a couple times to get it to light off. Right now its about 50 at night and it will start just with a long crank. If you shut it off and restart it will fire right up until it sits. Once hot its fine until it sits over night for a cold soak. The other weird thing is it will run smooth and have good power. no runs rough at all. I have checked all the commons, glow plugs, ipr, icp, good oil and filter, good fuel and psi, intake air heater is working, latest calibration etc. Hotline recommends all 6 injectors which is going to be a hard sell to warrenty plus I have a hard time thinking its injectors with this type of concern. anyone have this experence? We might try to change the oil to 10w30 and go from there see if it makes a differnce. other than that Im stumped

saw this this morning. gotta love it, there goes the gravy customer pay cam sensor repair
-
interesting. We just had one of these the other day that we just did a program on and let it go. I was wondering if we where going to have this issue sooner or later. the gas engines, more in the rangers had issues with programming setting the p0128 codes. We probably wont see as many here in az as the cold states, we are only in the 65* here during the day, maybe 45s at night on cold nights.

Ive got some good pictures of the problem in the rail Im talking about. I left my camera at the shop the past couple days so I have not uploaded them. Nothing short of replacing the rail would have fixed this truck.
-
have you looked at the sealing surface on the rails on repeat offenders?
-
SO I have had a huge issue with rail block off plus eating up o-rings on LCFs. I have have a few on the F-series too but it seems more common on the 4.5 at least here. We deal with alot of barricade trucks that sit and run all night long. Some will just need o-rings then some are just stubborn and will return shortly with the smae issue. Well on this last one I look closely at the rail and found a mismachined surface that the o-rings ride on. Its right where the o-ring fails. I have since ordered a rail to fix this. I beleive this is something we should start looking closer at. Im sure the F-seris have the same problem and if we keep getting repeat repairs from this take a look at the rail. I will try and get a picture but its down deep in the rail. just a fyi to look out for.

I make it a point to carry a spare. lets just say loosing a 35" tire at 75mph in my bronco with a detrot locker is not all that fun. I had been out wheeling and tore a gash in the sidewall that later blow the hell up on the road. Now on the toyota Im going to lug around a 38" swamper /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif but your right, hardly anyone is man enough to get out and change tires cause frankly they are not man enough to check the condition and air pressure that would percent most blowouts anyway
-
haha, yeah I think I have enough of the common parts to keep with me on road trips. Ill just pull over and fix it on the side of the road no problem.
